Acrylic painting with Venetian Plaster texture

This is truly a mixed media abstract painting with lots of Venetian plaster, red acrylics, stencil and scraffito work with some black flings of paint and oil sticks. I used this as a demo for a short one day texture workshop for some of my Canvas by Canvas peeps after I took the Carolyn Riegelman workshop in Granbury. See my post HERE about the workshop. And I must say a little extra bling added by Meaghen and her mom Cindy. This is a torn paper portrait collage of one of my granddaughters that I began as a demo in the Grandbury LGAA workshop HERE. That's her dad with the collage, Brad: Peace but Meaghen can be seen in the slide show below. That was the last of November and before the final varnish today I gave it to Meaghen to add some of her personal ideas around the edges or anywhere she chose. See the details below:

I love this little 3D dragonfly she added and I didn't see him until I started the varnish..so cool and it has given me new ideas for letting clients add some of their own ideas/images to the collage. I used computer printed text for the names of her family members but these were items that meant something to her that I wasn't privy to.

Here she added some jewels and trim to the canvas side and some Hello Kitty items and on the front some jewels. This makes it her collage.

I am on Pinterest and have added a board about Quotes and found one by Andy Warhol that certainly speaks to me. "Art is anything you can get away with" and it certainly applies to this collage. The little dragonfly is OK in 3D but her eyes, NO and they were beginning to get a little 3D with so many corrections so I just got out my acrylics and said this is it, she will have acrylic paint eyes with some collage. This is another great thing about collage - there are no rules and beware of people making rules for you to follow or telling you what you can collage. Just go for it. Email me if you have a question. Do you know how many times in workshops I've asked "What color is that?" or "What size is that brush?".. my instructors would grrrr under their breath but answer so I can understand inquisitiveness. You'll have to ask Meaghen how she made the dragonfly 3D.

Kiss Each Other

Most of the time I separate my collage work into torn paper and hand painted paper categories. An example of a torn paper from magazines, is one of my son, Eric HERE and one of hand painted papers would be of Rocinante, a horse collage HERE.

But in this high heel collage I have combined the two methods of collage application where in the bow and the heel I've used some metallic papers that I had painted and the rest of the collage is torn magazine paper. In the background above the heel in the corner are some papers that I've printed of numbers of cleaning tags saved, pasted and copied to make personal collage pages to use.

Weird, obsessive, or you must save a lot of stuff and yes to all the questions but also another method to add your own personal marks to your collages.

I began this collage in December and Christmas got in the way. I demonstrated some of the techniques at my collage presentation for the Pecan Plantation Art Guild on January 13 and last night finally glued on the last pieces to dry overnight and today maybe the varnish coat.

The title? Kiss each other was a phrase from an old book and I placed it under the heel, hard to see but a nice surprise when you look closely. Be kind, play nice. Kiss and make up.

OK, I was just having some fun here after I saw some Facebook posts and especially one by my friend, Kathleen Elsey, and one thing led to another, and finally led to the above painting. I've always loved Madame Matisse with the green line down her nose so I used my face with some other Madame Matisse looks. Kathleen, a Fauve painter, is from California and I've traveled to Santa Barbara and Sonoma to take her workshops, and she says I think I'll add this feature to my workshops "Paint a Green Line Day". As much as I love vibrant, exaggerated colors and loose brushstrokes, I enjoy the neutrals with texture also. I sold this painting this week and then received a lot of favorable comments on Facebook about the time I was ready to paint it red. This is a companion piece to the painting that I posted here and has been sold, New Year, New Celebration.

This is a little confusing. Past Celebrations is still available. New Year, New Celebration sold. I've already confused some FB friends.

It is not framed and can be purchased from my gallery at Daily Paintworks HERE.

I like the composition and color combinations in these two recent paintings and I'd like to paint some larger ones on canvas in the next few months.

I gave a talk on torn paper and hand painted paper collage at the Pecan Art Guild in Granbury on Friday and took several of my collages to show. It was a great turnout and I got to see some "old" friends and made some new ones. A real plus was my daughter was able to "assist" as Danna White (her name is Dana Cude.)

Plans are in the works for a possible weekend workshop there with the hand painted paper technique and I will post more details from the blog.

WordPress is a little different than what we're used to in Blogger but you will get the hang of it in no time. Remember you can sign up for the daily feeds that go out so you'll be able to see the newest painting that are listed; however, on the home page only the pro members are listed in the searchable data base. If you have a favorite artist that is an associate the only way to find their paintings is to search by name. I was hoping that any painting on the site could be searched by looking through such menu items as acrylic, abstract, subject, etc.

A professional or associate membership - choose wisely before you add your images.

I pay $120 a year for membership in the Daily Painters Abstract Gallery and it allows me to post images there and on the Artists of Texas blog, and Contemporary Fine Art International. Cfai has a new site and last week I worked several days adding some of my painting images as a Pro member as there was a mistake in my account and I should have been adding them as an Associate member and those images added in both areas will give you an indication of which level you want to be. For example, go to the Cfai home page HERE, click on Gallery menu tab, style, abstract and you will see 5 of my images loaded as a pro member. (One is Hold On and mouse over for the information to show). These paintings are in a searchable data base that is extremely important when clients are searching for a specific piece of art. As an associate member, yesterday I uploaded a small acrylic floral still life "Once Upon a Time" and the only way a client would find that painting is to go to page 6 of the Artists tab, click on my name and see my gallery or if they knew my name to begin with a search using my name, but we know that happens rarely. Most searches are done using terms like, small, red, acrylic, etc. The Pro account (an additional $5 a month) allows pricing on your images. Since I pay for a Daily Paintworks account that allows me to sell there, it didn't make sense to me to pay for two selling accounts; however, I would love to see all the artists on cfai (Pros and Associates) have their work in the searchable data base. It is a beautiful site with some exciting art. Please visit us there and sign up for the daily updates with your email address.

Image Capture at Creative Image Affair

I've sold the painting "Together" and it will soon be on its way to Maine. It has gold and metallic paints and collage and it's very hard to photograph with a point and shoot. Creative Image Affair did a professional job of this shoot and I was able to watch the process of using the original painting for future limited art print editions (giclees). The image can be placed on canvas, Plexiglass or paper in any size. There is a form on the site for more information about this process if other artists would like to have an image capture of a special piece of art. This is one of the dozen or so paintings at an eclectic shop in Graham, Texas, J Dolittle and Co. and Vickie Milam has sent me word that some have sold. I did a series of couples and this is one of the few that is left. Subtle background color covers the newsprint collage.

"Blessings" is a mixed media acrylic figurative painting on 3/4" depth gallery wrapped canvas with texture of pencil, sgraffito, and metallic and paint splattering. I've added it to my gallery at Daily Paintworks.

Workshops:

See my blog post HERE about the painting I did in the Carolyn Riegelman workshop in Granbury in September. The word is now out about her April 2012 texture workshop in Granbury and if you want on the list I hear the class is filling up quickly. I'm taking it again as we all were so productive and had so much fun. Contact the Lake Granbury Art Association HERE We love using Venetian Plaster for texture and we used Lowe's Valspar Venetian Plaster during the 2011 workshop and I've found a Behr Venetian Plaster at Home Depot. I haven't tried it yet but will report on it in a later blog post. A lot of artists have differing opinions on whether to use it on canvas or a firm support. Carolyn says use it thinly and build up the layers on canvas - a statement I think I might have missed the first time - probably outside flinging paint on my canvas. Anyway I'm hoping my red painted textured acrylic on canvas holds up. It is one of my favorites.

My favorite Professional Gesso is by Utrecht and I see they have a YouTube video on their wood panels which might be something you'd like to try out if you go the texture route.

Movie:

I've just seen "Midnight in Paris" at the theater and it is scheduled on DVD this week and I must recommend this for a great holiday movie treat for all and especially if you're an artist.

This is a small figurative painting where your imagination can help decide on the subject matter. Are these angel bodies? Are they old fashioned girls in a snow flurry? A graceful Parisian from the 1900's? Whatever you make them out to be, they are a favorite subject of mine to paint, red haired girls, single or in groups. Do you think their faces are too white?

Figurative Collage Painting ~ Together ~ by Texas Daily Painter Nancy Standlee

I enjoy painting abstracted figures and painting my own papers to use in collage and in this painting I combined the two methods. Here is an example of some of the metallic papers I've painted:

I've taken workshops with Gerald Brommer, and on line through "the Land of Lost Luggage" and from Anne Bagby and Carrie Burns Brown. Check out Creative Catalyst art instruction DVD's if you can't get to a workshop. Click HERE. The "B's" (category) have some great artists and you can search by medium or title. I have some Ann Baldwin books and DVD's also and Robert Burridge. I've taken more workshops from this man than any other for just acrylic painting techniques, he's the best!!

Creative Catalyst is trying to keep artists painting during the holidays and are encouraging artists to post paintings to their FaceBook page Holiday Paint Out and be entered into a drawing for a free Anne Bagby DVD that will be out in January. CCP has also been so good to give me a few DVD door prizes to give out at my workshops and the students are always so appreciate if their name is drawn. The word this week is LOVE so the posts should have no trouble with that word at Christmas.

Canvas by Canvas Peep Party

What a treat when all 8 of the Canvas by Canvas collaborative artists can meet, paint, and celebrate. Yesterday we put the finishing touches on our 2 rooster paintings, celebrated recent birthdays and had our Christmas exchange. What a special day for all of us. Each canvas in our paintings is painted by one of us and then we group and frame them in our distinctive style. Here are the two roosters and we're accepting titles for these paintings. Our party food was even a collaborative effort and I love to try new recipes on my friends. IF you need a fast, good soup recipe try out Black Bean and Salsa Soup Recipe at All Recipes, click HERE. Now the instructions, say drain and rinse. I didn't but just dumped in the whole can in the blender, left one can out to use whole and for us I doubled the recipe but used 5 cans of beans. I made my own veggie broth by boiling a few carrots, celery and onion. We topped the soup with sour cream, cilantro, avocado slices, green onions and oyster crackers..oh, yum and it was fast and easy and something you can have on hand for impromptu meals.

Here is our group photo taken out in front of the studio at the Upstairs Gallery in Arlington. Canvas by Canvas is working on some exciting plans for new paintings, wine glasses, grapes, bicycles, so keep checking our CBC website and we're adding new paintings to our CBC blog also. We do take commissions also.

If you are an artist, do something with your art each day. This week I put the finishing touches on "Together" like the hanging device and varnishing and I consider making a good soup a little arty also. "Dear Friends", a cupcake collage was made using some of my hand painted papers combined with some found papers. A Texas map was used as the background with some vintage stamps. There are no rules in collage about the type of paper used so if it adds to your design use it. Some of my previous portrait collage posts have shown my work with magazine papers that I refer to as torn paper collage. Most of the papers in the cupcake were painted and stamped with acrylic paint. The title, "Dear Friends" was torn from a book page.

Vikie Milam, who owns J Dolittle Co in Graham TX will show some of my work in her eclectic shop soon. I'm preparing a box of paintings to get to her next week. Stop by at 338 4th Street and enjoy your visit with Vickie.

Workshop:

If you think you'd like to design and paint some of your own paper for collage, I will be giving a 3 day workshop sometime in early 2012 and the first day will be an orchestrated design process of painting our papers with the remaining days devoted to collaging these unique pieces of paper with a subject of your choice, maybe you'd like to collage your own cupcake, a favorite food, a fruit, a rooster, a bird, a cow, or your pet. The design choices are endless and will result in a very original work of art by designing your own paper and working from an original photograph. And I will have some cupcake designs available if you'd rather choose from one of my designs.

Joy is found on the face of a child when offered a ride on the merry-go-round anytime during the year. I belong to a group of 8 collaborative artists, Canvas by Canvas. We are friends first but we also own a business and meet to paint our own photos. Each one of the 8 members draws for the square they are assigned to paint. (Moans can be heard in a landscape project when the lower left square is drawn and it's all grass!)

This was my demo in the Graham Collage workshop and I finished it to show in the November 29 and 30, 2011 2 day portrait collage workshop for the Lake Granbury Art Association. It is a personal collage of my oldest son, Brad giving his favorite photo look, the peace sign. The photo was taken about 10 years ago at a July 4 fireworks celebration and has always been a family favorite photo of him. He is a rugged guy and works outside in the heat and cold and it took several tries to get a pleasing skin tone. For a personal collage I added a photo of his work truck and family members names. I emailed and asked if he would send me some info, like what is your favorite color, food, song, etc. Not one to divulge information he shot me back a text with "red, hamburgers, and "For the Good Times". OK brief and to the point without explanation or additional info.

When doing a family portrait, I got welcomed responses from other family and friends like "his nose needs a bump, his lips are too red, make his sideburns darker, and his fingers are too short". Some of these I heeded but the fingers were foreshortened and I didn't rework. I think it is helpful to listen to and weigh suggestions and most of the suggestions were used and I feel like it's a more successful collage because of the hints.

For the Granbury workshop demo I worked on a 18x24 of Brad's daughter, Meaghen, that I will post when it's finished. We had 11 students to attend and they did some amazing work and seemed to enjoy the process. Below is a slideshow of some of their pieces and all are in different stages of completion.

In October about 18 of us enjoyed an abstract workshop in Granbury TX with Denton's Carolyn Riegelman. Check my blog post HERE to read more about the workshop. Now I've got some Canvas by Canvas friends who are wanting a "texture day" workshop so out to buy more Venetian Plaster and more paint. What fun. I love red paintings and they just remind me of Christmas, birthdays and happy celebrations.

If you look closely you will see the painting is not signed on the front so the owner can hang it in several ways. I did not put hanging hardware on it for the same reason and it can be hung over two nails in the wall and will fit flush up against the wall.

This colorful floral with negative painting was first posted HERE and it has a name change and a new photo and is now posted for sale at my Daily Paintworks Gallery. This acrylic painting has some stencil, pencil and sgraffito work.

The painting has a lot of lavender in it and I thought about titles with "lavender blue..dilly, dilly". Remember that song? Wikipedia has a nice discussion about the old lyrics dating from the 1600's and I chose a line from a later nursery song.

I picked up the larger piece Saturday from the Arlington Museum Show, decided I'd missed this companion piece to the two smaller paintings and hung the triptych in my entry hall last night where they will stay for awhile. I had been wanting to do a red painting for some time and wishes were granted in Granbury at the Carolyn Riegelman workshop. One difference, my walls aren't black but I thought these looked more dramatic against a black backdrop with the heavy textured red painting.

In August I painted plein air in Santa Fe with Dallas instructor Niki Gulley. She chose this great spot near Canyon Road. We were secluded from the traffic and street noise beside a small steam and a picnic table. I took a few liberties in painting the Inn at Loretto. and Mangiamo Pronto. The yellow umbrellas on the patio were a charming scene.
The group painted on Friday morning until lunch and we were free until our 4:00 critique back at the hotel. I chose to forego lunch and start gallery looking on Canyon Road. Scott Williams took me to the top of the hill in the van and I was ready for pickup about 3:30 PM. Any person needs a good 3 or 4 days to explore the Santa Fe galleries and now I'd like to go back. Scott and Niki are a great husband/wife team to lead a workshop. Scott, the photographer, would be so patient to carry us to sites and bathroom breaks; however, it did take some cajoling to let us stop for 5 minutes at the art store at Artisans. Scott said it would be like herding cats to get us all back in the van. It was.

I ordered the plein air gold frame from ASW and the painting will be delivered to Visual Expressions Art Gallery for a fall show. Reception is Friday, November 13, 7-9 and it will hang until December 2, 2011.

New Art Supply:
I always like to share new art finds. This is a great oil stick marker for mixed media work. It is used for livestock marking. The sticks come in several colors at very reasonable prices. I found this company online with a Google search. In some areas, limited colors could be found at local feed stores. Try QC Supply for LA-CO all weather Paintstik markers.
We used similar sticks in the Carolyn Riegelman workshop in Granbury.

Plein Air:

During the recent workshop in Sonoma CA with Kathleen Elsey she had a cart that carries a lot of supplies if you drive to the location but it might not be suitable if flying. Fall Art Shows ~ Kathleen Elsey Workshop Slide Show ~ Texas Daily Painter Nancy Standlee

These 3 paintings were delivered to the Dutch Art Gallery Tuesday in Dallas for the Artists of Texas third annual juried membership show November 5 - December 31, 2011. Save the date for the reception Saturday November 5, 11:00 - 4:00.

The LGAA Fall show ends this weekend in Granbury at the Historic Shanley House Gallery, 224 No. Travis, Granbury, TX. across from the Hood County Library. Calypso Dreams won an honorable mention in this show.

Two of my pieces are entered into the Arlington Museum of Art annual Community Art Showcase. Reception is October 28, 6:30 - 9:00 for the 6 week exhibit to celebrate the vitality of visual art in the metroplex. The exhibit is varied in media and subject matter. Workshops:

I will be teaching a 2 day portrait torn paper collage in Granbury with the Lake Granbury Art Association November 29 and 30. Contact Littlejohndj@charter.net if you are interested. Participants don't have to be an artist OR even be able to draw but a good attitude and willingness to take a risk and experiment is a must. If you enjoy designing and tearing and gluing paper, sign up. Here is a previous work I posted on this blog of my son and his dog and my daughter done in the torn paper collage method we will use in the workshop.

Below in the slide show I have posted some of the work done in the Kathleen Elsey plein air workshop in Sonoma CA. I met a wonderful group of very interesting and talented women plus one man was in attendance. I stayed over an extra day and Kathleen and I visited the di Rosa Gallery and we came away thinking we were two fairly conservative artists. I think my blinged out boot might be appropriate here after I get through wearing it.

There were two "collaged cars" in the exhibit. It was amazing what you could find attached to the car with careful observation. My trusty black boot lost a little bling during the many arrivals and departures during this California trip so I had to retouch some of the bling on my boot and yes, I think it would fit in the landscape at di Rosa.

Kathleen and I said our goodbyes at a leisurely Italian lunch at Della Santina's Trattoria on the Sonoma square. Oh what a treat after this exciting workshop. You enter a gated entry and a brick walkway and quickly are transported back to Italy. The patio is covered in grape vines and wisteria and the food and wine are excellent. Later Kathleen journeyed to Chalk Hill Winery to paint on site and exhibit other paintings. The exhibit will hang until mid January.

I'm back home in Texas writing around a mail cluttered kitchen table between a mix of California and Texas time and wanting to paint but know there are other agenda items. I'm not rushing into anything just going to gently ease back into the schedule.

So what do I think about plein air? It would certainly be a go if painting in beautiful Sonoma climate of 70 and 80 degrees with these magnificent pastoral scenes. As I examine the above painting I find the white rose bush is almost as large as the crepe myrtle tree and it will need a little "pruning". Each vineyard has an abundance of rose plants in every color protecting each row partly tradition and as an early disease warning. In humid areas the roses and vines are susceptible to certain mildew and fungal diseases with the rose being the more delicate and the disease will show up in the rose first.

We painted at the Kunde Family Estate Winery and it was a pleasure and we were invited to the tasting room for a complementary wine tasting about noon. My turkey sandwich tasted pretty blah after wine and chocolate.

It can be very challenging to paint outdoors but when the weather cooperates and a few friends are in shouting distance it was a thrill and a treasured memory.

Painting advice from Kathleen Elsey, our instructor. "Fix your biggest problem first." Also she likes to start with fresh colors each day. I didn't and loaded up my palette early back in the motel room before we went out and used off the same mixtures all three days. In fact, I had enough paint left over to tone extra boards late one night before I left. I wrapped each board with a piece of parchment paper so the gesso/or painted panels would not stick together. Kathleen advised not to rush into our painting but bond with the land, walk around, look through view finders, take some photos, sketch thumbnails and value sketches.

Equipment:

I am using the EasyL Pro from Art Essentials. When I painted in Santa Fe with Niki Gulley she was using one and recommended it and the Masterson Sta Wet Palette sits on top.

Here is the22" rolling back pack from Costco by Ful I used as a carry on and put the wooden box in it and carried the tripod in the checked luggage along with all the paints that I put in a Glad plastic storage bowl with more plastic. With a broken foot, I knew I'd want to sit a lot so I loved my new camp chair by GCI.

I decided on 1/4" birch plywood panels, 4 x 8 sheets, for the support to paint on that Niki liked also as they are lightweight. My neighborhood Home Depot, N. Arlington #554, was so kind and cut them for me in 8x10, 9x12, 11x14, 12x16. I sanded the edges slightly and gessoed each one with the Utrecht's Pro gesso.
I also had a backpack as my "purse" with laptop and ticket, etc. in it and a 29" piece of luggage so I was so appreciative of the wheelchair help provided by American Airlines.

We painted at Oak Hill Farms on Sunday and I posted the painting on my blog. I wrote and asked the name of the magenta plant that was so beautiful. Stacey Tuel replied it is amaranth as in the grain and they grow it as an ornamental. Check out their blog with my painting included. Thanks again for hosting our group.

Day 2, Plein air workshop with Kathleen Elsey, Sonoma CA.

I don't think I've ever been to a lavender field before besides trying to paint the plants. Some of these plants had already been harvested and they were more shaped like our Texas tumbleweeds but with color. This painting will probably have some additional touches later. Our location on day 2 was the Matanzas Creek Winery in Santa Rosa, about 16 miles from Sonoma. The view was fantastic.

Each morning at 9:00 a.m. we met at the La Haye Art Center in the sculptor's studio to discuss the previous day's work and to give the day's location. The day ended at 3:00 with a short meeting back at the studio. In the morning we'd leave our gear in the car and bring a sketch pad for notes and directions. Kathleen would give us our little pep talk about how to be expressive, loosen up, and use interesting brushwork with us in agreement until we got to the site and wonder, "Now what did Kathleen say?" By then she'll call us over for a short demo and then we'd have another shot of enthusiasm for the day's painting. On the way out of town stops were made at the Sonoma Market for a sandwich to go or a quick visit to the well stocked Fine Line Art Store for a needed art supply.

The Group photo was taken on Day 3. Fifteen students were from Arizona, Florida, South Carolina, Texas and California.

Even the bath room walls at the La Haye art center were painted.

Materials:

Paints: I brought Winsor Newton acrylics with Golden Retarder to use in a Masterson Sta-Wet Palette with a sponge. I filled the palette in the motel room and left the tubes in the car just in case I needed a refill. Kathleen recommended we squeeze a "worm" of retarder on the top of each paint mound in the palette and since Sonoma was in the 70's and 80's that worked very well. The colors remained workable for 3 days. On another post I'll discuss other supplies and gear.

During the 4 day workshop with Kathleen Elsey in April in Santa Barbara, I knew I would like to take another one from her, especially in Sonoma. I'm experimenting with plein air again after the Santa Fe workshop with Niki Gulley. Years and years ago I lived in California for a short time but had never made it to the wine country and Sonoma is a wine and travel destination with over 17 miles of beautiful pastoral scenes and the birthplace of the CA wine industry. So it made for a great choice for a plein air experience, Santa Fe and Sonoma. I might could even make a painting with such beautiful scenery choices in a 3 day workshop plein air in Sonoma.

On Sunday morning after a get acquainted meeting with 13 other students, Kathleen gave us our driving directions and we had a delightful day of painting at Oak Hill Farms. I will post a slide show from the day at a later post. It was a perfect day, perfect weather, perfect companions, and perfect instructor, perfect location.

Why am I making such a point of this being worth the trip? At times I really doubted my sanity at trying to make this trip with one broken left foot in a big black blinged out boot, my 76th birthday looming this month, and the amount of equipment I would have to bring. I'll show the supplies I chose in another blog post also. First obstacle there was an American gate change at DFW from A15 to where I arrived to C36, about 20 miles away (in one broken foot miles). What I thought would be a leisurely DFW breakfast turned into no breakfast with a mad dash on the handicap tram to reach my gate just as boarding began. I chose to fly into Sacramento and make the 70 or so mile drive to Sonoma with the first stop as soon as possible at a Denny's for eggs and toast the middle of the afternoon. Sacramento airport has just gotten a big new face lift and there is quite a hike from unloading to baggage, with a ride on a little bullet train, down a glass elevator to baggage but American had a wheelchair waiting as I hobbled off the plane. It was amusing as the strong young man picked up an older gentlemen and I to wheel to our destination (one in each hand) and he kept trying to give the other passenger one of my two bags. I was loaded down with a big back pack and a 22" wheeled backpack and they were both stacked in my lap and every time the angel pushing man would try to share my load the man would say "I don't know her". I finally got my point across these were indeed my two bags, the other wheel chair person and I were not acquainted and just load them up in my lap and we'll go. Fortunately the car rental bus was right outside baggage claim and with more good strong men to hoist heavy bags. Then it was a matter of finding my car, loading it up, turning on the gps, finding some breakfast on the way, finding the motel and questioning still if I've made the right decision. On Sunday painting with new friends out on the Oak Hill Farm, Yes.. it was worth the trip. What a beautiful day.

Torn Paper Collage Workshop ~ Graham TX ~ Old Post Office Museum and Art Center by Texas Daily Painter Nancy Standlee

These are two torn paper collages of my children that were used as examples in the Torn Paper Collage at the Old Post Office Museum and Art Center, Graham, TX, October 7 and 8th.My demo which is not finished is of my third child and oldest. Cindy Parker, one of the Canvas by Canvas members, and her husband, Danny were instrumental in getting this workshop together.

Cindy used to live in Arlington and she would take us everywhere in her SUV and we loved riding with her because she never got mad when we gave her wrong directions. She is a great painter and was always willing to help one of us with our drawing and she was a hard CBC worker. One day we went to Graham to hang a show, these two (Cindy and Danny) were introduced, their eyes locked on each other, she stopped working, forgot all about us and began a wonderful new life.These two were soon married, she moved to Graham and we don't feel like we've lost her but gained a whole new set of Graham friends through the Parkers. Canvas by Canvas will have a spring show at the museum.

Paper was just not the medium for Danny as he likes to work in welded metal sculpture and uses random pieces of metal and found art. He has had several solo shows in the area.

My next two day collage workshop will be in Granbury November 29 and 30. If you are interested sign up with Diana Littlejohn littlejohndj@charter.net. You don't have to be an artist to attend, but a good attitude willing to take a risk and experiment and enjoy tearing and gluing paper while learning a new technique. Also drop by the Shanley House and see the Fall Festival Juried Show sometime during the month. I have 3 pieces in the show and won honorable mention with one.

The Arlington Museum of Art presents the annual Artist's Showcase and the 6 week exhibit celebrates the vitality of visual art in the metroplex during October and November.The exhibit is varied in media and subject matter and works by amateur and professional artists from the community can be seen in the Main Gallery and Mezzanine. It is located at 201 West Main in Arlington. I have 2 pieces in the show.

If you get a chance to take a Carolyn Riegleman workshop, drop what you're doing and go sign up. The first 15 minutes of her first demo had us all slack jawed at her paint application. You can really do that? You are using what to paint with? Is that a squeegee? She has a very irreverent use of her art supplies. If it comes in a can, tube, jar, or squirt bottle with paint somewhere in the title she will attempt to use it and apply it directly. Forget your palettes and big fancy brushes. I think she brought one brush and lots of big spatulas, a step up from palette knives. She paints in textured layers and has at least 3 paintings going at once so the paint application can dry on one while she's painting on the other two and then she repeats the process and sometimes completely obliterates what was previously put down. For 4 days last week I was in Granbury throwing and slinging paint with this lucky group. What a great time we had and a special thanks to all who helped me unload and load because of the "boot".

Carolyn called the above piece I did "the Carolyn knock-off" and I have to agree. All summer I've wanted to paint a red painting and if you'll look at her website you'll see she does lots of red paintings. I took this to the Arlington Museum of Art Saturday for the Community Art Showcase. They only hung the bottom section as the chairman said she couldn't deal with a triptych in this show but drop by and check it out if you want to see a red painting with lots of texture.

This is one of several paintings I've worked on this summer. It has been a summer of workshops, Niki Gulley in Santa Fe, my 10th and 11th with Robert Burridge at the Wenmohs Ranch, Alex Powers at Artists Showplace and Carolyn Riegelman with the Lake Granbury Art Association in Granbury, TX. Bob's first workshop was a 3 day and some of us stayed over the long weekend with Dena and painted in her wonderful barn/studio and that is where this one was started and finished it up the following week. In the above painting, Bob said run her leg off the canvas and so I did. I named the series "Toward the Sun" as many of our conversations were about the unrelenting heat and that hot yellow sun beating down on us. Here in the heat the feral cats had taken to the porch roof under shade (well, also to keep the ranch dogs, Roscoe and Christine, at bay. The donkeys could be found under the sparse shade of a mesquite tree but the dogs were never to hot to chase the donkeys if given the opportunity. But in the evening the dogs preferred the living room shade, exhausted and sleeping if not in Dena's lap as close to her as possible. As Bob says, "People like choices". Shade or sun? When it's 106 most people would choose the shade.

Bob always wants us to write down our intentions before we begin so mine were to work larger, use more texture, be more abstract, and add some figurative element with bold color. These two weeks were special being surrounded with artists friends painting with our Bob's permissions slips to paint like we've always wanted to..and NO RULES.

One of the many reasons Bob's students clamor to get in his workshop is summed up on the cover of his journal:

Paint what you know.

Teach what you learn.

Love what you do.

Pass it on. (then we all go to Art Heaven because Bob says he thinks Art Hell must be no water and no Holbein Luminous Opera.)

My left foot:

During the past 4 or 6 weeks my foot has been hurting and swelling. I decided I might need to take time out to get it checked out and now for one week I'm been in a big ugly black boot because of a broken foot. I've hauled art supplies over New Mexico and Texas with a broken foot!! It sure feels better in a boot. I decided it needed some "boot bling" but that can be addictive fast and thought for awhile I might have to go to "bling rehab". I'm in a great workshop this week in the boot and some lovely ladies helped me unload. More to come about the fun informative workshop with Carolyn Riegelman. There's just a little bling residual as I'm having a hard time staying out of the gold, silver, and bronze metallic paint.

"Nothing But Blue Skies"

Bob, Robert Burridge workshop, encouraged us to think about a body of work the week of the workshop at Dena's. I mentioned in another blog post about my theme of "Toward the Sun" and this was a very hot, Texas week with lots of blue skies and sun shiney days. This is a large piece, mixed media acrylic on canvas, with a texture medium, charcoal, and pencil and I refer to the style as a "figurative abstract". Figures always appear somewhere in my abstracts so I've just quit fighting that fact and will only enhance them when then appear.

There are so many good memories from these past weeks so in this post I'll just post a slide show then get back to the windy, wordy posts later. It was a pleasure and privilege painting with a room full of dedicated passionate artists. It is an honor to be associated with all of you.

"Straw into Gold for You"

This abstract figurative piece has hand painted metallic collage paper and some Citra Solv papers attached with gel medium. I finished it yesterday in the workshop and added some Citra Solv papers today after a demo by Robert Burridge at Dena's Ranch in the workshop.

Bob showing us the by product of acrylic palette skins on 4 mil plastic. Looks like they are strong enough for a loin cloth or not? The table top is covered in 4 mil plastic and he squeezes out tube color onto the plastic and uses it as his palette. After several days of painting there is a nice dried paint build up that be peeled off in a large sheet for your choice of use - loin cloth or clown painting or both.

"Toward the Sun"

The Robert Burridge Abstract Acrylic Painting and Collage workshop August 22-26, 2011 at Dena's Ranch has begun but I stayed over from the previous 3 days workshop last week on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday and I could not wait to start painting abstracts. The above painting was done over the weekend before the workshop started. It may be subject to change AFTER some Burridge instruction this week.

Last week we discussed having a series of work like we were planning a show. While I was checking the spelling of "heliotrope" one of the definitions besides being a light shade of purple, or reddish lavender was any plant that turns "toward the sun". I liked that phrase as the SUN (weather) has been the topic of conversation for weeks/months here in central Texas. We feel like we're had a full-frontal assault from the sun for weeks. Truly the sun has been the star of the summer show of 2011. Light comes through my bedroom window and signals it's time to begin the painting day. The sun follows me to the kitchen and blast through the undraped windows making the computer screen difficult to read. We know the quiet has ended when Dena pops the top on her Dr. Pepper can and the action begins.

Monday, first day of our abstract class, Dena was out of the room taking care of ranch business when a lone brave centipede appeared causing a squealing, screaming sensation. He'd read in the Centipede News they had water drops on a cool cement floor and he braved it in from the west to check it out and he could hear Bob's cool jazz in the distance.. If you've taken a workshop with me you know I always carry lots of supplies. It usually goes something like this "Do you have a pen I could borrow?" Me: Yes, would you like a rolling ball, gel, or waterproof, fine or medium tip? Or.. do you have a ruler Me: Yes. Do you want a strait edge, plastic, metal with a cork base, 36", 12" or 6"..Ok.. you get the drift. So it should be no surprise to hear me yell "I have my Aunt Myrtle's hammer just a minute. (This little tack hammer with a broken claw has been passed down in our family). I tried a warfare flank attack instead of a full frontal and began to strike blows in his middle parts hoping to slow him down but missing about the same number of times as I hit and he'd escape. Brother Cletus was heard to shout "Hit him on the head". The other 17 in the class was trying a retreat technique or as Sue in the photo putting their legs up in a chair. Bob, from California, was heard to say "I don't believe in killing little creatures." So on my next supply list for Dena's place will be a large ball-peen hammer for Grannie Thor hoping to get him on the first blow instead of chipping up Dena's floor. Now we can get back to abstract painting..maybe but I'll keep my warfare weapons nearby.

Making a MESS:

Robert Burridge says you can't paint a bad pear - just make a circle with a triangle on top, have an extra canvas or paper near by to clean your brush while toning the next painting, and most of all be loose and have fun. There have been lots of pears lining the walls of Dena Wenmohs barn studio this week for a 3 day Burridge workshop. He will say "short choppy strokes, get in, get out, short choppy strokes"; however, on this particular pear I made a "Burridge Mess" before doing some negative painting. A "Burridge Mess" is a lot different than one my mother used to refer to. This mess was done on a toned canvas and then drop/splatter various colors of paint all over, watch out for and from your neighbors, and then negative paint. My neighbor across the table in Jean Levert Hood and we're having a great time, in and out of class and we each have our own big table. A fast way to tone a canvas is use a damp waded up Viva towel, dip in color and cover with color.

You will most likely find some Holbein Luminous Opera somewhere in a Burridge type painting. Mix it with an Ultramarine Blue for a beautiful color I refer to as "Heliotrope".

Ladies with Collage

Last week I did a plein air workshop in Santa Fe with Niki Gulley and still have some paintings to show but I've just completed a 3 day workshop this week with Bob Burridge at Dena Wenmoh's ranch and I've had the best time painting wild and loose acrylics with lots of new and old friends. The above painting is on gessoed watercolor paper and some Citra Solv collage.

Bob and Nancy.. I'll have to count how many workshops I've taken with him as it is getting close to maybe 10? I advise any artist to take at least one of his workshops where there is an abundance of energy and sharing. One student said he felt like he'd been hooked up to a fire hose with the amount of info he'd received.

Niki Gulley and her husband, Scott Williams conducted a 5 day plein air and photography workshop in Santa Fe August 8 - 12 and I painted the above the last day, Friday, of the workshop of the Loretto Inn but you can see I took numerous liberties. Across the street, Old Santa Fe Trail, is Mangiamo Pizza that has wonderful yellow umbrellas. Most days I'd get one not so good painting and then one that was more recognizable. Some of the acrylic paintings will have to be given a little face lift back in the studio.

It was a wonderful week after the first day Monday jitters about painting plein air. I chose acrylics which was a constant battle with the drying time. I had some water-soluble oils but didn't want to practice with them on my first official plein air experience and decided tackling one medium was enough this trip.

Niki is a very versatile artist and she gave demos in each person's medium, pastel, watercolor, water soluble oils, and acrylic. We'd meet at 8:30 or 9:00 a.m. depending on the distance we'd need to drive and Scott and Niki would set up a canopy if there was no shade in sight. This workshop was a great learning experience and gave me a new appreciation for landscape painters, although we had many 12 hour days. We went to our morning location, maybe a box lunch, or a restaurant then move to our afternoon site, back to the motel, wash our brushes and brush off the dust, and then meet for dinner.

On Friday, we had most of the afternoon free and I chose to explore some of the galleries on Canyon Road and then Scott let us look for 15 minutes in the big art supply store there, Artisan's, then back to the motel for a critique. I hope there will be another workshop in my future with Niki and Scott. They are planning on Paris in May and they are looking at a U.S. site for next year. Acrylic Textured Mixed Media Figurative Painting

This highly textured mixed media painting has been entered into a juried fall show. It is a piece similar to one that is on my website HERE that I decided I needed to keep for inspiration. I applied a textured ground, and some oriental papers for additional texture, and painted it with acrylic and acrylic glazes.

Daily Paintworks now has approximately 450 artists in their gallery. There are painting challenges and paintings to bid on and a lots of paintings to view and enjoy.

Lake Granbury Art Association members are hanging new work in the library thanks to chairman, Carol Mercer. I submitted several of the acrylic mixed media pieces covered with the epoxy resin glaze and they will be on display until October. The epoxy resin glaze gives a clear glass-like finish with lots of depth and it enhances all the colors. These pieces are more beautiful in person than what a photograph could ever present. There are several steps that need to be followed in sequence and the resin cures in 8 hours, hardens to full strength in 72 hours. The piece has prepared Tyvek, embellished foils, acrylic paint, Yupo collage and sand/gravel painted gold.

A side view of the cradle I made after 3 trips to Home Depot trying to find the correct wood, finding the right cutting tool, and lots of emails to the artist who introduced me to this mixed media way of working, Carol Nelson. I'm returning one tool and ended up cutting with a jigsaw that required a lot of patching with modeling paste!! I think in terms of time I would be better off buying ready made Ampersand gesso panels. It was a big learning curve. Now do I really need to buy a table saw? That would require me cleaning out the garage to find a place to put it and with it 103 in Texas I'll probably keep using the jigsaw for awhile. I used an extension cord and set up shop out in the back yard and I made cradles all day long yesterday.

"Earth's Curl" is a highly textured, mixed media contemporary abstract on gallery wrapped canvas. I used some texture medium on the canvas with some collaged oriental papers. Warm colors of an analogous scheme of reds and golds are a reminder of our hot Texas summer.

This is my red painting. I brought several canvases (some new and some old turkeys) when I took the Cheryl McClure Abstract class recently. It's good to have extra canvases around to wipe off the excess paint from your brushes and use up any left over palette paint at the end of the day to tone or just add some new color to a canvas. I went to the workshop with the intention of painting a red painting and all of them turned into something else. I kept finding people in my abstracts so in this one I just drew some figures and put on red paint over a highly textured foundation. After working on it again this week, I find my ladies have become a blur and the red painting has morphed into an analogous warm painting. Maybe my red painting will appear at the Carolyn Reigelman's workshop in September in Granbury.

The title of several of the abstracts that I worked on during the workshop comes from road signs I saw coming home in heavy Friday traffic. In the Dallas area the HOV (High Occupancy Vehicle) lane is reserved for two or more persons or I considered "Two for the Road".
