"Only in Dreams"
 acrylic on canvas
24x30 in.
This was not done in California but I delivered it today for the TAC juried show at FWCAC.
The mission of the TAC is to support the career development of artists, whether they are emerging or established, amateur or professional. The reception is Friday night, August 3, 6-9 and will hang until August 30.

Our Class: July 26-29, 2012 with Robert Burridge
Arroyo Grande CA.

Students came from all over the world, Abu Dhabi (we loved saying those words) United Arab Emirates, Honduras, Alabama, Washington, California, Texas. Check his website for his workshop schedule. (In Bob's Living Room) This is the one we took:
July 26-29, 2012
Robert Burridge Studio Workshop
Come paint with Bob in his Studio in Arroyo Grande, CA
(includes individual mentor time, demonstrations and personal theme development)
4-day Workshop/Mentor Program, limited to 7 enrollees
Contact Kate@RobertBurridge.com for fees and details.

The House on the outside:

Kate and Deborah's great lunches on the covered patio
Time out to feed the horses on the way to the studio.

Canvas Prep:
In prep for the CA mentoring workshop with Robert Burridge,  I cut up some of my canvas roll into some suitcase size pieces, gessoed them, put them face to face with a piece of 4 mil plastic between. I did a lot just in case. See the last blog post HERE to show the texturing I did on some of the pieces.  I did 15 10x10 (15 in sq) and 6 20x20 (25x25) and 6 11x14 and a strip for color studies..wow that was a good idea but I never had the time for color studies. I used Utrecht professional gesso and took a pint to use for my white paint. The rolled up textured canvases seemed to travel O.K. with the plastic sandwich. I have the stretching tool from years ago and will try assembling the stretcher bars and stretching the canvas and hope I don't have little textured flower petals jumping off in the floor and will stretch the pieces that are stretcher worthy.
I returned home Tuesday morning about 1:00 AM and on some errands today like delivering "Only in Dreams" I started shopping for stretcher bars. The news is not good for 10" gallery wrapped ones. Oh, dear now to do some fancy Google searches.
My Bob Journal "That Boy Ain't Right" (I think I may have to add a PS.."Look there goes a chicken".

I'm a journal keeper, not daily (I wish) and teach a "Love Your Life" journal workshops. In Bob's case I have a journal devoted to his workshops, some pages more developed than others. And the numbering tabs are all over the place. This one was number #13. A devoted stalker!!
In Texas put in my goals/intentions and wrote again his mantra.. "always take the high road" and cut the cover off my Klimt book with The Kiss painting and glued it in for inspiration and some photos and scribble sketches of the most recent textured florals of circles. Here are other journal pages I prepared for some of the work ideas I wanted to pursue, Kandinsky circles and Klimt women, florals, and circles and some photos of some of my paintings.

Then this journal entry "My Favorite Pants".
Bob says "wear old comfortable clothes" so I brought a very old, favorite pair of soft faded old lady jeans with a drawstring waist. Sometime on Friday, after lunch and when I got back to my hotel room in the evening, disaster had struck unknowingly to me. Four of us decided to meet at Fins, a ocean side restaurant, and we had a very enjoyable dinner discussing painting and our workshop experience. When I returned back to my room and undressing, oh my gosh.. this is what I found

Not just a rip down the seam but a rip and a tear with a section handing down.

Surely I would have noticed IF we'd taken that proposed walk on the beach. It is a wonder Fin's security hadn't asked me to leave!! They did not go into the trash until I brought them to show and tell the next day in class and apologized if I'd mooned some of my new friends.

So now I've added a new back home goal:
WHEN I get back and Now I'm back..all this is getting under control!! I will wear my shirts right side out and clean out my cabinets and get some new Walmart pants.

Painting in Bobland and California Roses Series by Contemporary Painter Nancy Standlee

California Roses (First in a series)
10x10 in. mixed media on gallery wrapped canvas
(this is an estimate on the cropping as it is on a flat canvas to be stretched to a 10" square

It began like this on my Texas front porch (yes that's a dead pot of rosemary you see)

 Closeup of textured flat canvases

I know it will be hard for anyone in the Southwest, especialy Texas, to believe this but without any heat or a/c in my California motel room this morning (my choice) it's 68 degrees - perfect. But that's the way it is when you're in Bobland - perfect. I am really, truly in Bobland, on his own turf, his and Kate's in Arroyo Grande, CA in his country studio mentoring workshop.
Arroyo Grande is located on California's central coast in San Luis Obispo County. That's Robert Burridge, contemporary painter, who travels the world teaching us how to be fearless painters. I'm one of 7 students who is studying with him Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. We met on Thursday at 1:00 to set up, get acquainted, discuss our goals. You think I came a long way from Texas? I did but one gal here is from the United Arab Emirates and one if from Honduras. I took my first workshop with Bob at Dena's Ranch in 2006 and this is my 13th. so his students travel long distances and take many of his workshops.

Bob, Kate, and NS in the kitchen for a wonderful Kate breakfast.

Bob in the studio getting us motivated.

 The Perfect Studio
Getting Here.
Travel does come at a cost as you just can't do it all and I sent my family an email and my apologies IF for any reason I didn't make it back.. my house has got to be the worst ever in my history. I taught a great one day collage class Saturday at the FWCAC and I haven't had time to put up that stuff plus all the other stuff!! Getting ready for two exhibits and on and on. I have coffee grounds and torn paper all over the kitchen floor, have resorted to wearing clothes wrong side out, and bugs are flying around my head after raising a family in my Raisin Bran and my refrigerator "smells funny". I promise I'll clean up my act when I get back.. Brad (one of the boys) says I've never had it together in the first place and that surprised me that he thinks that way.  Anyway I'm here focusing on the moment in Bobland. I wish you were here also painting along beside us. What a wonderful adventure and you may be sure there will be more posts about this country studio. Check back, please.

Something a little new for me, mixing a floral with the torn paper collage, The vase and some of the background is collage and the flowers are painted with a textural medium and acrylic paint with some collage, acrylic skins, some charcoal. The edges are painted a neutral gray. I'd been in a Kandinsky circle mood again and I've ordered more of his books. This one would have fit in nicely with the new book just out, Painting with Mixed Media by Paula Guhin. Three of my paintings are included in the book.
This will be one of my three entries for the curated Arlington Museum of Art Show, August 15-September 21. Save the date and read more about it HERE.http://arlingtonmuseum.org/exhibitions/heartbeat-invitational-exhibition-of-art/

Torn Paper High Heel Collage Painting, Mixed Media, "Feel Beautiful", 12103 and Workshop at the FWCAC by Texas Artist Nancy Standlee

I gave a torn paper high heel collage one day workshop at the Fort Worth Community Arts Center for 9 eager students and I can't wait to share their work. One lady had never done any thing with painting or collage before. I planned this workshop with the idea that you didn't have to have prior art experience but some did. I tell them I need to talk to you about 45 minutes at the beginning of the class to get your confidence up and before the time was up and someone in the class said.. "OK.. we've heard enough. Where's the glue. We're ready." I furnished the image and photos and they brought their own magazines to tear. We were surrounded by art in one of the galleries, lunch was a few steps away in Z's Cafe and it made for a fine day of meeting new friends and learning more about collage. Thanks Elaine Taylor, gallery manager for proving this opportunity for us. They gave me the highest compliment when some said, "When is your next workshop?".  Thanks class for giving me your time for the class and taking a chance with collage.
(We called it a high heel collage workshop but some wanted to do a Texas boot and that was agreeable and if a guy showed up, he might be more comfortable with a boot.)
Please note: Some of the pieces are not finished. One great idea for future works you might consider is one student was collaging her daughter-in-law's wedding high heel and adding one of the invitations to it. Won't that be a forever keepsake?

Here are some photos of individual work and below that is photos with them working at the tables.

(An apology to some I told I'd post steps to this collage and I got so involved I forgot to take photos but will next time. This is a large collage so they could see the steps clearly and I finished it up at home.)

I've been thinking florals for the past week or so and remembered this one I painted in the Janet Rogers workshop. See blog post HERE.
I had been finding the painting pinned on Pinterest without a correct link so decided to put it on my Daily Paintworks Gallery. I haven't painted in watercolor in several years but use watercolors mostly for journal entries. The posts before and after the link show some of the journal entries.

I'm glad to report that I'm one of the 12 and you are invited to the reception.

Sweet Summer Roses, 12101, Mixed Media Abstract Acrylic Floral Painting by Nancy Standlee Texas Artist

I've been in a Wassily Kandinsky Circle mode and have ordered several of his books in the last weeks. Here is a close up of the above textured painting using Liquitex modeling paste for the flower shapes.

Here is one of the Kandinsky paintings I've looked at for inspiration. He was a Russian born expressionist and is one of the pioneers of abstract art. To read about him and other artists go to The Art Story. Click HERE.
He felt like the circle was the most peaceful shape and it represented the human soul.

I'm a big fan of all kinds of stamps to use in making collage paper and found this one below that helped inspire the above painting also. The title of the stamp is Ranunculus Field and I wanted to use that in my title but who could say it or remember it. I researched the genus and came up with Buttercup. I like that name but then that gives a yellow significance and I wanted to use all colors so gave up and chose Sweet Summer Roses. And since I've already done some Polka Dot Roses like this one, it would fit in.
