Watercolor Beach Painting, Dreams of the Turtle King 13088, Day 30 of the Leslie Saeta 30/30 challenge, ArtByte Collage Tutorial, Book of Poems, Dreams of the Turtle King by Denise Bossarte. Illustrated by Texas Contemporary Artist Nancy Standlee

Dreams of the Turtle King 13088 SOLD
11x10 watercolor, pen and ink
Bockingford Rough 140 lb paper, Nakimi Falcon pen, Lexington Gray Ink
with Metallic Pearlescent and Interference paints by MicaColor

My paintings are available on the Daily Paintworks gallery page HERE.

I have an ArtByte, an affordable collage tutorial available HERE.

This painting is an illustration for a book of poems, Dreams of the Turtle King, written by Denise Bossarte that should be available on Amazon around first of December, 2013.  Denise is a Texas photographer and a member of Artists of Texas.
This is the cover illustration for the book with Denise's vision of a sea turtle with an orange coral crown. I decided this sea turtle needed some glitz and I've had three sets of metallic, pearlescent, and interference paints by MicaColor that I've finally used and love the result. The instructions say you can mix with regular watercolor but I used these straight from the round palettes and in layers for an opaque look. To see and read about them, check HERE.
It is hard to get a true photo of the shiny paints but I think when it is professionally scanned the colors will be more true. Denise is the owner of this painting.  I'm working on these each day, posting them on my Daily Paintworks Gallery and website and Facebook, sending them to Denise to be scanned, and matting in a 14x11 mat and shipping when sold, and allow 2 weeks for the painting to be mailed if you purchase.

Last day posting on the 30/30 and I've been able to post each day. To see work by other artists who are following along with the 30/30 go to the Leslie Saeta blog. It has been a challenge to paint and post each day and she may be planning another in January so if you are interested, add it to your bucket list.

Sandbridge Apples 13078 Leslie Saeta Workshop Day 1 by Texas Artist Nancy Standlee

Sandbridge Apples
8x8 palette knife painting
available on Daily Paintworks

(Well I was in Virginia Beach and Sandbridge  and for some reason - because of wifi that was a little wonky.. this was never posted and now I'm home doing watercolor illustrations for a book of poetry but I'm proud of my palette knife oil plein air apples.)
I'm in Virginia Beach painting with Leslie Saeta in a plein air workshop but it was a little windy yesterday so we stayed close to the beach house and painted apples around the swimming pool under a covered porch in Sandbridge VA.

To see work by other artists who are following along with the 30/30 go to the Leslie Saeta blog. I have joined hundreds of other artists for this September painting challenge and we are trying to paint and post a painting each day. It doesn’t have to be a finished piece but some piece of art each day. On some of the larger commission pieces I have posted portions over a 3 day period. On the smaller pieces I can do one a day.
I have written an ArtByte about the process of torn paper collage for the Daily Paintworks site and it is ready for viewing HERE. It has 10 pages with more than 50 images. An ArtByte is a small online tutorial that may be free or it's very affordable. Mine will be very affordable at $10.00 and it's loaded with information . And/or I can answer any questions you might have. Send me an email or message me on Facebook. You can also leave a review. There are several very good free ArtBytes that are filled with information. When you get to the Daily Paintworks web page, look under tutorials. Here is my online gallery at Daily Paintworks.

I've decided to open a shop at Etsy as I will be adding some small watercolors soon. The shop has limited paintings right now but I will add more each day. http://www.etsy.com/shop/NancyStandleeArt

The teenage couple on the beach:
This is an interesting and a new project for me, reading the written words in a poem and translating the images and stories that develop into an image on paper. The words here that called to me were teenage, skateboard, girl and sleeping bag. When you read the poem maybe you will "see" another image from a different line in the poem.

Tuesday first day in the Sandbridge Leslie Saeta palette knife, oil, plein air workshop and it was pretty windy so we painted around the swimming pool of the beach house. John, Dodi, and Nan with Leslie in the background.

Wednesday the weather was perfect for beach painting and here is Leslie showing us how to paint a "beach person". This was a great opportunity for me to take lots of beach photos for the watercolor illustrations I will be working on during October.

Another Artist of Texas , Denise Bossarte, has asked me to illustrate her book of poems, "Dreams of the Turtle King" poems inspired by South Florida beaches, and this is my third watercolor sketch with the Namiki Falcon and Lexington Gray ink. I've been plein air painting on the  Sandbridge beach in Virginia while in the Leslie Saeta workshop. Now I have 20 more illustrations to go for the book and they will all be beach related. I have about 5 to go for the Leslie Saeta challenge and some of these can overlap. After the book illustration images are scanned they will be available for shipping, approximately in two weeks.

My paintings are available on the Daily Paintworks gallery page HERE.

Shots from the Leslie Saeta plein air, water soluble palette knife workshop in Virginia Beach. There was every kind of set up you can imagine. Here's Rosie from Canada on her card table and she wowed me because she "backed" into every parking space. I told her in TX. we wait until we find two and pull through so we don't have to back - or is that only me? In the distance is Dodi and Kari.

John, (NC)Rita (Richmond) and Rosie (Canada)... John was only male and the suitcase handler and valet to car jockey lol and a good painter. He did leave Thursday evening just so he wouldn't have to do a repeat. He's the first person I saw when I arrived Monday evening and helped with my heaviest bag up the steps. There were a lot of steps at a beach house.  On the way from the airport, I called Leslie and asked if I needed to stop for a burger or would we be going out to eat as a group and her answer... I'm cooking a gourmet meal for all of you. Next question... do I need to pick up some wine? No, you are covered. What a great experience she provided for us.
Kari  was the first one up each morning and plugged in the coffee pot so the coffee was ready...woo hoo.. always need a friend like this.

Darla from Amarillo.. also a Daily Paintworks ally and that's a camera smudge on her hair.. looks like gray locks, but she is painting figs at the Flip Flop Farmer market. I had met Darla at a Dena Wenmohs workshop and she was the only person I knew to begin with in the Sandbridge workshop. She painted some awesome figs and I took a photo of the box and maybe later I'd like to try painting some of my favorite fruit.

Another Artist of Texas , Denise Bossarte, has asked me to illustrate her book of poems, "Dreams of the Turtle King" poems inspired by South Florida beaches, and this is my second watercolor sketch with the Namiki Falcon and Lexington Gray ink. I've been plein air painting on the  Sandbridge beach in Virginia while in the Leslie Saeta workshop. Now I have 22 more illustrations to go for the book and they will all be beach related. I have about 6 to go for the Leslie Saeta challenge and some of these can overlap. After the book illustration images are scanned they will be available for shipping, approximately in two weeks.

This was my set up painting plein air at the Flip Flop Farmer fruit stand in Virginia and by then I'd busted my chair but what saved my bacon was the umbrella and the James Coulter easel. We were breaking for lunch and we left our things, jumped in the car for a pizza break and I was renewed to finish the oil painting. See that tree line that is following the back roof line, well that is a bad composition and will be fixed. Sometimes you just don't see clearly until there is a photo on a computer monitor. There were so many neat things to paint everywhere you looked and I was delighted to find all these brightly colored wooden, hand made fruit bins. The "farmer" was very careful not to put a yellow item in a yellow box.  I need to do a little touch up on this one as it smudged in a few places getting a wet painting from VA. to Texas but it was a wonderful trip, great workshop and some special side trips like the one to visit an artist friend across the bay.

Gloria Coker, is an impressionist figure artist from Newport News and I got to spend some time with her on Friday after the workshop and visit her studio and see this fabulous acrylic figurative painting.
You will love me after I give you this link to her website as you will spend several hours just admiring her original work at Gloria Coker Fine Art.
In 2004 several of the Texas painter friends went to Duck NC to study and paint with her in her beach house.
On the plane.. yes, the passengers knew right away we were on a girl trip.
One of my favorite Gloria pics. She was so kind to us with her instruction and hospitality and someone we all wanted to paint like and she cooked for us also.
And Leslie cooked for us and now I'm wondering what my response will be like when I ask the next workshop instructor if she/he will be "fixing" my night meal?
Our version of a glamor shot in paint clothes. From left, Pat Salazar, Cindy Campbell, Maryann Stephens, Karen Foster, and NS (and several friends with their head shots on painting stirrers/sticks that kept showing up in strange places).
