Plaid Enterprises sent me some of their wonderful products to try and the above "Feed the Birds" mixed media hand painted paper collage was made with some of them. I used Mod Podge paper to attach the papers and I used some of their colors to paint the papers, including Parchment, Champagne, Pure Orange, Coffee Bean, Berry Wine, Licorice and the lovely Peach Fuzz. I also used some found papers, vintage stamps, and maps to complete this mixed media paper collage painting.

A suggestion for "collage fodder". Check out an AAUW book fair sale such as the one today in Arlington. It was the last day and half price and I found some great vintage books and sheet music that will find a new life in one of my collages. Thrift shops and Goodwill stores will have used books that might be suitable for collage work.

I will be teaching a 3 day art journaling workshop this weekend (not free) at The Upstairs Art Gallery in Arlington.
This will be the "Love Your Life" art journaling workshop I taught at Dena's in the summer and I have one scheduled there next May. In the class we will discuss adding some of your favorite things to your journal, things to add while traveling and touch on altered book journals and a little stamp making. These 3 paintings were accepted into the NLAPW Expressions 2010 show, National League of American Pen Women, at The Wine Therapist, 1810 Skillman, Dallas, TX 75206, November 6 - December 12, 2010.

Rocinante has been given a prominent home on my updated website, http://NancyStandlee.com, which is always under construction. I have really neglected to make updates as needed but for 2 days this week I worked on collage and mixed media painting updates and now I need to update my links so keep checking back. The rush was on because I'd taken out an ad in the Southwest Art magazine December issue with the Rocinante image and he wasn't even on the website.

I textured the piece with modeling paste, burlap and collaged some aluminum embossed foil and painted it with various acrylic tube and metallic paints. This is one of the pieces I've sent to the Austin juried show.

I worked on this piece at the CBC paint out at the lake house. I've also entered it into the Austin 12 x 12 juried show.
The deadline for entries was October 20. I've entered 3 pieces so we'll see if any get in.
On this collage piece I've used some images from a Starbucks sack, some hand painted papers using my handmade stamps, some collage images from old paintings and pages from a vintage magazine.
"Good Coffee" reminds me of the beginning of my day and heading to the kitchen, grinding the beans and waiting for that first cup in my favorite mug. I tell the CBC girls each time we rent the lake house "I'll bring the coffee" and I will get the pot prepared the night before so first one up always know to plug it in and then we can be found on the patio drinking that delicious first cup and discussing what paintings will be worked on first.
If you are interested in collage, a cup of coffee is a great image to experiment with as there are thousands of Google images to use or photograph your own favorite mug filled with your special blend. If you have the Google tool bar installed you can search blogs, the internet or for specific images for inspiration and then add your own style to the art work with your hand painted papers, stamping or with magazine pages such as the artist below.
I have a West Texas friend, Suzy Pal, that is working with collage but using magazine images so find your favorite way of working and join us in our collage journey. Congratulations to Suzy for winning an honorable mention in the Midland show for "Rodeo Clown".
I've added a link on my blog to Collage Making for those interested in any kind of collage. I haven't looked at all the blogs and websites yet but I know there are some goodies to be found.
I have recently joined another blog Mixed Media Artists International and we don't have many subscribers yet but I see the subscription box has been added and if you work in Mixed Media why don't you join us? Try some coffee collages using your choice of techniques and paper and post with us.

Some of you have read previous blog posts and know that I'm taking an online class at Texture Town and here is lesson 4 examples on 5 x 7" canvases of some of the colors we will be using. Now I'm ready to start working with some of the heavily textured pieces.

I love to explore collage, mixed media and texture. While researching online this week, I found a YouTube video introducing an online class, "Texture Town" with Julie Prichard and Chris Cozen and signed up. The class has just started and if you'd like to join me the first two classes have been more introductory classes and we really haven't started applying the texture yet. The piece above, "Fluctuation", is one completed over the summer and has some copper and metallic paint in it. In this workshop, Julie and Cris will be using a limited nature palette.

I belong to the group, Contemporary Fine Art International, and blog, Daily Painters Abstract Gallery, and some of us will place an ad in the December issue of the Southwest Art magazine. I have chosen the above collage, "Rocinante" to place in the ad. I may never be able to pronounce the title but I thought Rocinante would make a good title for this painted paper mixed media collage. To make it more confusing I'm using the Spanish spelling but using the English pronunciation. Rocinante was the name of Don Quixote's faithful friend and horse who accompanied him while he was tilting windmills in the story by Cervantes written in the 1600's. See which pronunciation you like better HERE. John Steinbeck, 1902, Salinas, CA., "The Grapes of Wrath" author, took a 10,000 mile journey in a 3/4 ton truck in the 60's and he named the truck, Rocinante. The book that came from that was "Travels with Charlie." Yes, I've ordered the book from Amazon.
Technique: I have been gluing a map for the background and I have added other elements this time from some vintage books and stamps, dress patterns and a tailoring book from my college days, an interesting face stamp. Some relevant words I've added are horse, Don Quixote, wild horse, Arizona, horseman, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, warriors, and drawing. Some of these words came from a 1902 vintage magazine and a dictionary. I learn something with each new collage and it takes many close up views of Google images to get the eyes correct.
I have entered him in a Dallas juried show today also. More to come on that.

"On Earth, Peace"

Saturday, Elizabeth (Betty) Taylor and I delivered our CBC painting to the PCPC art festival. Last weekend we took a painting holiday to finish this painting just in time for delivery. It is a juried show and the jurors, Cheryl and Ken Vogel, own the Valley House Gallery. More to come about the fate of this painting. It was a new concept and style for our collaborative group and you can read about our long weekend HERE.
