Painting in Bobland and California Roses Series by Contemporary Painter Nancy Standlee

California Roses (First in a series)
10x10 in. mixed media on gallery wrapped canvas
(this is an estimate on the cropping as it is on a flat canvas to be stretched to a 10" square

It began like this on my Texas front porch (yes that's a dead pot of rosemary you see)

 Closeup of textured flat canvases

I know it will be hard for anyone in the Southwest, especialy Texas, to believe this but without any heat or a/c in my California motel room this morning (my choice) it's 68 degrees - perfect. But that's the way it is when you're in Bobland - perfect. I am really, truly in Bobland, on his own turf, his and Kate's in Arroyo Grande, CA in his country studio mentoring workshop.
Arroyo Grande is located on California's central coast in San Luis Obispo County. That's Robert Burridge, contemporary painter, who travels the world teaching us how to be fearless painters. I'm one of 7 students who is studying with him Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. We met on Thursday at 1:00 to set up, get acquainted, discuss our goals. You think I came a long way from Texas? I did but one gal here is from the United Arab Emirates and one if from Honduras. I took my first workshop with Bob at Dena's Ranch in 2006 and this is my 13th. so his students travel long distances and take many of his workshops.

Bob, Kate, and NS in the kitchen for a wonderful Kate breakfast.

Bob in the studio getting us motivated.

 The Perfect Studio
Getting Here.
Travel does come at a cost as you just can't do it all and I sent my family an email and my apologies IF for any reason I didn't make it back.. my house has got to be the worst ever in my history. I taught a great one day collage class Saturday at the FWCAC and I haven't had time to put up that stuff plus all the other stuff!! Getting ready for two exhibits and on and on. I have coffee grounds and torn paper all over the kitchen floor, have resorted to wearing clothes wrong side out, and bugs are flying around my head after raising a family in my Raisin Bran and my refrigerator "smells funny". I promise I'll clean up my act when I get back.. Brad (one of the boys) says I've never had it together in the first place and that surprised me that he thinks that way.  Anyway I'm here focusing on the moment in Bobland. I wish you were here also painting along beside us. What a wonderful adventure and you may be sure there will be more posts about this country studio. Check back, please.

I think it's wonderful that you know your priorities and what is meaningful to you. Unless one has some kind of OCD,or someone to pick up after us, artists at our age usually have an abundance of stuff including dust :O)It took me two years and many moth traps to get rid of my pantry moths.(came in the corn meal from the store)
If I had your good health, energy and funds, I'd be right there with you. Keep on keeping on Nancey :O)

Yes I can prioritize when the time comes and my priority was getting to CA. and see where Bob produces his paintings. Thanks Eva for the comments and wish you could tag along also.
