 Pear:Poire XOX 13077
10x10 torn paper collage on gallery wrapped canvas

Earlier I had done a 9x12 collage pear and it sold and since I'd had many nice comments on it I decided to try another one in the square format.

Side View, each side is different as you can tell from the back view

Back view (hanging wire has not been added)

To see work by other artists who are following along with the 30/30 go to the Leslie Saeta blog. I have joined hundreds of other artists for this September painting challenge and we are trying to paint and post a painting each day. It doesn’t have to be a finished piece but some piece of art each day. On some of the larger commission pieces I have posted portions over a 3 day period. On the smaller pieces I can do one a day.
This is one of those paintings I did before I left for the Leslie Saeta plein air oil palette knife painting workshop in Virginia Beach. Here is a group shot of us out on the deck of the beach house and I don't have to mention what a great fun experience it was.

A little camera tilt here but we are loading up to go to the beach and paint on the 2nd day.

Thanks to the ones who drove the rest of us and who were not too picky about sand or oil smudges in their vehicles. The name of the place was Sandbridge.

Next to meeting some great new friends was Leslie's great meals she prepared for us. This apple dumpling pie was spectacular. We will have to ask her to post the recipe. She used the honey crisp apples we bought at the fruit stand.

This mixed media collage sold while I was in the workshop and is in the mail today, Game On, heading to a Texas art collector.

I have written an ArtByte about the process of torn paper collage for the Daily Paintworks site and it is ready for viewing HERE. It has 10 pages with more than 50 images. An ArtByte is a small online tutorial that may be free or it's very affordable. Mine will be very affordable at $10.00 and it's loaded with information . It is available immediately and can be viewed as soon as a PayPal payment is made. It is stored in your ArtByte library. And/or I can answer any questions you might have. Send me an email or message me on Facebook. You can also leave a review. There are several very good free ArtBytes that are filled with information. When you get to the Daily Paintworks web page, look under tutorials. Here is my online gallery at Daily Paintworks.

I've decided to open a shop at Etsy as I will be adding some small watercolors soon. The shop has limited paintings right now but I will add more each day. http://www.etsy.com/shop/NancyStandleeArt

Torn Paper Collage Workshop ~ Florida by Texas Artist Nancy Standlee

"Happy Rebel"
18 x 18 in.
Torn Paper Collage on Canvas
(Using recycled magazine pages)

This was collaged at the Derek Gores Collage Portraiture workshop in Melbourne, Florida, February 26 and 27. Here is the Brevard Museum description of the class:
"In this collage portraiture workshop, Derek will teach you to use torn paper to capture a portrait in a fresh new way! You will make one finished portrait of any person you choose. Or, if you're inspired to make a collage of something other than a person, that is fine too! Derek will demonstrate and guide you through the process of drawing, selecting your colors, and building up you collage layer by layer."
The image was taken from a magazine and inspiration was from one of Derek's earlier pieces using recycled magazines, maps, wine labels, song lyrics, and postal stamps and found papers.

"Red Bike"
by Suzy Pal
Collage on watercolor paper

I was very happy to have Suzy "Pal" Powell of Plains, TX. meet me at DFW to attend the Derek Gores Workshop and she gave me this collage for my "superb" driving skills! In the Derek workshop I mentioned on my blog in December, I flew into Melbourne but this time we decided to fly into Orlando and drive down. We had a great time, met some new friends, ate some great seafood, walked the beaches and thoroughly enjoyed Derek's workshop. Derek will be in Texas June 1 and 2 at the Wenmohs Ranch. Check with Dena if you'd like to attend. Suzy and I both plan to be there.
I packed my car for the Robert Burridge workshop before I parked it at the airport for the Florida trip. I got off the plane from Orlando, jumped in the car and headed to Dallas for a Burridge Watermedia and Collage: Postmodern Painter Meets the Contemporary Collage Artist. I agree this is a little obsessive and you will think that when I tell you this is my 8th Burridge workshop. We got off to a great start today and later this week I'll post some of the paintings from it. I've been a little busy and some things go undone. For instance, my Christmas fruitcake is rolling around in my car passenger seat floorboard. OK... it's another story and maybe I'll dispose of it when I'm unloading from these workshops. One thing I've learned is plastic garbage bags make great collage bags for packing slightly damp collages. I was not too sure that I wouldn't have various parts of clothing stuck to my collage upon arriving but both the collages came through. The second one was a good start of a Canvas by Canvas member that will be completed after regrouping and finding a new place to store the Christmas fruitcake.

Rooster and Bird Torn Paper Collage Paintings by Texas Daily Painter Nancy Standlee

"Ready to Crow"
8 x 8" Mixed Media Collage on canvas board
SOLD during the 9 x 12 FWCAC Show

On the side of my blog, I have a link to Creative Catalyst, one of the premier companies to find the best of art instruction DVD's. If I'm scheduled for an instructor's workshop I find it very helpful to order the DVD either before or after the workshop to reinforce the learning. During Anne Bagby's painted paper workshop I learned to make some personal stamps and painted some original hand painted papers that you see in the above collage. Also I used some papers from the Carrie Burns Brown workshop and DVD. Lynn Powers has added a link to the Creative Catalyst blog and added a list of other collage artists that are doing some exciting work.

I've heard from several artists that want to try collage and my advice to all of them is "Do it. I think you will be pleasantly surprised at the results." For these two works I've enjoyed using a Texas map for the background. "Keep working on it until you like it" as Derek Gores said or "until you can't pick it up" Gerald Brommer, the father of collage stated in the two weeks of workshops I took with him. When I teach a collage workshop I think I'll start my students out by working on a cupcake - what a happy subject. Each collage is as distinctive as each artists' handwriting when you work from original painted papers, personal images and personal creative energy.
An artist that has an abundance of creative energy is Robert Burridge and I'm preparing to take my 8th workshop with him. He has a huge following and even I wear my "Bobette" button proudly. He is one of the most sharing and secure artists I've ever worked with. A quote that all of his students are taught is "It's all been done before but not by you." He has even named his newsletter "The Artsy Fartsy News with a free subscription. Read the April 2007 issue and this topic "It's No Secret" will give you an insight on his positive, supportive attitude. Try some collage, a farm animal, a rooster, a bird, a dog, a cupcake, a shoe, a portrait. These subjects aren't copyrighted. Your work will have your signature style because of your materials and personality.
A dog... if you don't want to collage an animal, buy one of these fabulous dog prints from Karen Dupre. I first saw her prints in Aaron Brothers. I haven't collaged a dog yet. Maybe there is one in my future.

And another collage artist to add to your list is Eileen Downes. Click HERE.

"FEED THE BIRDS" ~ BIRD COLLAGE
8 x 8 in. on canvas board
Hand painted papers, found papers, vintage stamps, torn paper collage, maps

I've sent in a release form for the above bird collage to be used in a future textbook for elementary and middle school art education students to be used at the college level. The book will be published by a major publisher in 2013.

Derek Gores Collage Portrait Workshop ~ Florida by Texas Artist Nancy Standlee

"Dance Me"
18" Collage Portrait

I'll never look at a magazine page the same way again since returning LATE this morning from the Derek Gores Collage Portrait Workshop, December 11-12, 2010 at the Brevard Art Museum, Renee Foosaner Education Center, Melbourne, FL. The workshop was over at 4:00 PM Sunday and plans were to return the rental car, catch the 6:28p to Atlanta but the plans did not take into account for Atlanta's bad weather and Delta slowing down. Instead of a DFW 11:23p arrival time it was more like leave Atlanta at 1:00 am and not getting into my bed until 3:00 am but it was certainly worth the waiting time to meet 22 new artist friends and study with this famous collage artist. Did I get anything productive done in all these waiting times and hours? No - just purchased more magazines to tear up and to try to quiet my buzzing head filled with torn paper collage images.
The Students:
We had 22 students, 21 ladies and one male, and plus one male observer part time. It probably is a draw for distance traveled between me and the lady from Rhode Island but I bet I win on longest time to get back home. I've never been in this area of FL and I met people from Melbourne, Kissimmee, Titusville, Cocoa Beach - names vaguely familiar but now you can put a face to the names and definitely add some Facebook friends.
The class description:
"In this collage portraiture workshop Derek will teach you to use torn paper to capture a portrait in a fresh new way! You will make one finished portrait of any person you choose. Or if you're inspired to make a collage of something other than a person, that is fine too! Derek will demonstrate, and guide you through the process of drawing, selecting your colors, and building up your collage layer by layer. "
I chose to keep some friends and do my own portrait. I took the photo in my kitchen using the gorilla pod on the kitchen table with a timed feature on the camera.
The Class:
Saturday was spent getting our images down on canvas and discussing composition and scale and positioning that first piece of collage paper. (I brought my piece drawn off so it gave me some walking around and observing time.) We were urged to use the biggest pieces first to glue down and get it covered in 30 minutes - NOT me or anyone else. Derek then warned us not to wait to get those eyes in until 3:30 Sunday. That's one reason my background is nice and layered is putting off working with the features. He had one rule for us "Don't use hair for HAIR." On my portrait if you click on the image to enlarge you can see some diamond jewelry pieces I've used for hair. (I brought some fur images just in case.) I had ripped out some magazine pages and divided them into colors in jumbo plastic bags with appropriate labels, red, black, text, personal items, white, etc. but I'm not for sure I'd need to do that next time or just maybe for the dominant color.
Derek was available to the class, answered our questions and spent a lot of time walking between the tables consulting with each student. In the slide show I didn't get a photo from each artist I'm sorry to say and I don't have the names of the work with the artist.
Derek spoke of having a history of time in art and my piece does have a history, the too white stage, then my neighbor Karen had gotten a beautiful glow with sewing pattern pieces, so I did that, didn't like the effect and added more white pieces while remembering what my collage teacher, Gerald Brommer said.. "You can keep adding collage until you can't pick it up."
Derek described his way of working as random and couldn't give us a definite sequence to follow and advised us to work large, loose and keep adding layers until you get it right and let the painting take you where it wants to go, ending up with a collage painting that is more than you could have imagined on your own.
I remembered a Pablo Picasso quote: "I begin with an idea and then it becomes something else."

Derek Gores Collage Workshop June, 2011 in Texas
If you would like to attend a Derek Gores collage workshop in 2011 check with Dena at the Wenmohs Ranch. I'll see you there as I'm already signed up and thanks Derek for my first portrait collage workshop in FL. He is scheduled for another workshop in FL in February if you can't wait until June. Thanks Florida friends for your hospitality and help with restaurants and hints and now Dena invites you to Texas to take with Derek in June.
