Contemporary Abstract Painting ~ "Cross Traffic Does Not Stop" 11027 ~ by Texas Daily Painter Nancy Standlee

"Cross Traffic Does Not Stop"
20x20x1.5 acrylic abstract on canvas

See the previous two blog posts about the naming of these paintings.
One of my favorite Picasso quotes is "I begin with an ideaa and then it becomes something else".
This began as an abstract in a Robert Burridge workshop so naturally I had to name it "Chill Out in Paris" because of his music choices but never finished the painting. Last week I worked on it again in the Dallas workshop with Cheryl McClure and it has been changed again into "Cross Traffic".

That's one of the wonderful qualities of working with acrylic paint - changing your mind.
This week I have joined Daily Paintworks so check out my bio and gallery HERE. I will be adding paintings often. One of the great features David Marine has incorporated into the gallery is the zoom feature. After you select a painting (click on it) then by mousing over you can see the texture and color in great detail. I think you'll like that feature when you want to see paintings close up.

Contemporary Abstract Painting ~ "Divided Highway" 11026 by Texas Daily Painter Nancy Standlee

"Divided Highway" 11026
Contemporary Abstract Acrylic PaintingLink
Canvas 16"x20"1.5 with texture, collage, stamping

Traffic Related Titles:
See my previous post about why I've chosen these titles for this series of works. The first announcements of the morning had to do with cars, traffic and parking at the Cheryl McClure Workshop in Dallas. For example, don't park and where to park. Don't park in the first 3 spaces behind Don Pepe's Rancho Mexican Grill (that's their loading/delivery zone). I researched some of the Texas traffic signs and realize we have a lot of "Do Not" ones. No Soliciting, No U Turns, No Parking. In Texas we have a lot of good highways to travel our long distances and we see a lot of "Traffic Fines Double" because of the many work zones but we really appreciate our good roads.

This contemporary abstract acrylic painting came to the workshop with some telephone book page collage, some stamping and marks of two figures so I had a good start for this warm colored painting. I added more texture with modeling paste before toning the canvas and beginning the paint/take away process.
Robert Burridge introduced me to Nova Paint and I used some of those paints in this series of paintings along with my regular paints of Holbein, Winsor Newton and Golden. Carol Nelson is the queen of texture and has introduced me to many different kinds of textures available and now I've learned of a new texture from Cheryl, Nova's Lightweight Texture Paste and I'm waiting for my order to arrive. I've been attending Tony Saladino's critique group for several years and have taken some workshops with him. He is a great abstract artist I admire. I'm looking forward for a fall workshop with Carolyn Riegelman and I adore her red paintings. I kept trying for a solid red in the Dallas workshop but they always turned into something else, except maybe one I'll post later so check back later and thanks for your visit.

Contemporary Acrylic Abstract Painting ~ Cheryl McClure Workshop ~ Daily Painter Nancy Standlee

"Road Work Ahead"
(a contemporary abstract painting)
24"x 24"x1.5" acrylic on canvas (texture, charcoal, pencil)

A contemporary abstract workshop painting with friends is a good summer start and it will be one of the highlights of 2011. About 20 of us gathered at the Artists' Showplace for Cheryl McClure's workshop: Abstract: the Process, June 21-24 from 9:30-4:00 (or until someone said "We're locking the doors--goodnight!"

I didn't bring a canvas as large as Cheryl's 30 x 40 on the supply list but large for me was the above 24"x24" and even some smaller ones lurking under my table, plus a few turkeys to rework. It doesn't matter the workshop but by the time I get it all gathered up in the living room to be loaded in the car, the travel, unloading and setup I always question myself about why am I doing this and never again do I want to go to this trouble and expense. After I return from the workshop, I'm always glad I made the effort and have some new techniques to add to my arsenal, some new friends made, old ones visited and more good memories.
In this workshop we added lots of texture and then toned the canvas before making our charcoal and paint marks prior to painting in our color choice. One way to make those marks was with an Egbert (not a nerd which came to mind) brush to make long flowing brush marks. Yes, I've already ordered a few Egberts.

The title:
It's always a little more difficult for me to title an abstract; however, while driving home in heavy Dallas traffic on Friday afternoon I saw "road work ahead" and thought I'm giving some of my pieces from this workshop some "road sign" titles. I can't tell you if this one is finished or not. It has not been varnished and I see an area I'd like to add a little gold leaf but then I tend to want a little bling on most of my work.

Cheryl's Palette.. Ok..she uses more than one and this is how she sets up one of them before the painting process begins. Her neutrals are in the center.

Green Bay Packer ~ Aaron Rodgers ~ Torn Paper Collage Painting ~ Empty Easel Article by Texas Daily Painter Nancy Standlee

"Aaron Rodgers ~ Green Bay Packer"

Torn Paper Collage Painting
30" x 24" x 1 1/2"on gallery wrapped canvas

This piece was done for a Sport Show for a gallery opening during Super Bowl week and with a lot of snow and ice there were some problems of attendance and closings. Good that it didn't sell as some of the text combined to make an objectionable word if read in one direction - something that happens when you are in the midst of grabbing up pieces of paper for their design qualities instead of their readability. Now it has been repaired with an additional piece of cheese!

I submitted an article,"Go One Step Beyond Painting - Create a Contemporary Collage" to Empty Easel and it is posted HERE on their site. Empty Easel is an online art magazine with practical advice, tips and tutorials for creating and selling art. Write an article or send in your favorite art tip and share.

If you'd like to read about other contemporary collage artists I've listed some of the ones I'm familiar with on my blog post HERE. On the above painting I've let some of the acrylic background show, used magazine papers and fewer hand painted pieces. It's your choice to what suits your design the best. With this process you will have fewer paint covered clothes but your house can begin to look like a paper confetti egg toss.

"Coffee, Thanks" 11024 ~ Torn Paper Collage Painting ~ by Texas Daily Painter Nancy Standlee

"Coffee, Thanks"
10" x 10" on gallery wrapped canvas

I'm preparing some demo examples for a collage class to present to some of the Canvas by Canvas members and while I had all the magazines out I just started gluing some of the more colorful pieces down using my favorite yellow coffee mug as a guide. This is one of the more intensely colored torn collages I've done. I think it's a little easier to work with black and white images.
I've rejoined the Artists of Texas and you can see a slide show of some of my images HERE where you can search by last name or by city, Arlington.

"Green Apples" ~ Acrylic Still Life Painting on Ampersand Gessobord ~ by Texas Daily Painter Nancy Standlee

"Green Apples"
9 x 12 Acrylic Still Life Painting on Ampersand Gessobord, cradled 2" deep

SOLD to a Joshua, TX art collector.

I really enjoyed painting this small still life and have kept it nearby in the kitchen but it's on the way to a new home after a little varnish. After several workshops, I'll be home for a few weeks and hope to paint another study from one of the exercises that inspired this painting discussed on this post HERE.

"Dana" ~ Paper Collage Portrait ~ Derek Gores Workshop by Texas Daily Painter Nancy Standlee

"Dana"
Paper Collage Portrait on Canvas
24 x 24 in.

Nancy and Derek
Some of the students who took the workshop

I'm back home now from the Derek Gores workshop at Dena Wenmohs Ranch June 1 and 2, 2011 and I'm getting ready to put on the final coat of varnish on my collage portrait of my daughter. On the slide show below you can see the two photos I worked from. On one I did some photo manipulation in order to see the values.
The post was written on Friday morning in the early morning quiet at Dena's house, drinking coffee and thinking about the past few days.
"I'm enjoying the quiet and memories of a busy past two days Derek Gores workshop. This was my third one as I traveled to FL. in December and February to take two day portrait workshops. It is very quiet this morning at the Wenmohs ranch, all except one of the dog's nose keeps bumping the screen wanting to come in and visit. I'm the only one up in the big house and I'm not letting him in just yet. Even the cats have retreated on top of the porch to enjoy their solitude.
Seventeen eager future collage artists gathered in and around Tuesday May 31 for the 2 day workshop where we had a meet and greet at the house. By Wednesday evening, several mentioned I looked exhausted. I was. It is draining to search for the correct paper piece in design and color and then actually attach it wondering if you've put it in the correct place. Derek works fast on the other hand. He picks up a piece of paper and finds a place for it. I tend to search for a particular piece. I came prepared with big jumbo bags of separate colors ready to go and with my canvas already drawn off. It is an easy workshop to pack and travel for, just some Liquitex medium and varnish, a canvas, brush, and a reference. Derek didn't even use a brush but applied the medium with his hands. A hint for finding papers is use one of those old rubber finger tips that you'd find in the top drawer of a secretary's desk.
At the ranch we can get to work early, taking a short walk to the magic barn from the main house or the bunk house, work and then have a fabulous lunch provided by Dena and Jo (and this time some help from a junior assistant.) It is a total art immersion while enjoying meal times and evenings with the students and seeing Dena's personal art gallery on her walls from previous instructors. She has 3 Charles Sovek paintings. My wish is for you to get to experience this ranch workshop and get to know Dena, a very special friend."

On the above painting, I chose to do one for my daughter who has a very special birthday in July. I took words and text that had personal meaning, typed in different fonts on my computer, and printed on a laser printer at Office Depot. She will be finding messages for a long time.
I enjoyed visiting with some old friends and made some new ones. Many traveled long distances to share in this experience, from L.A., El Paso, Houston, south Texas, east Texas and it was certainly worth the trip.
