Cupcake Torn Paper Collage Painting, "Big Night", 12083 by Texas Collage Artist Nancy Standlee

Big Night, 12083
Torn Paper Collage Painting with Hand Painted Papers on Canvas
8x8x3/4" depth gallery wrapped canvas

On Friday night, June 8, the FWCAC held their monthly gallery opening receptions and I sat up a demo in the entry area and worked on this small cupcake collage and the title comes from some text in the collage and it was a "big night" for all of the artists who were exhibiting their work. My collage exhibit is still up in the Cafe area until June 29, click HERE for more info.

Here are some close-up views of the collage and I added music papers around the edge similar to the collage shown here. The music pages around the edges are so brittle the pages fall apart when folded as they are from a 1915 music book. Other papers I hand designed and painted. Recently I gave a one day workshop at the Dutch Art Gallery, Dallas, on torn paper collage using magazine pages with a high heel image but this method is a little different as you paint your own papers. I will give a one day workshop in this painted paper method and we will collage a cupcake. No date is set yet but if you are interested send me an email and I'll add your name to the list.

Close up photos below

(this side is from the Arles cupcake that has not been posted yet but it is similar)

This is the acrylic foundation painting I did on the canvas before I began the collage process. I liked the blue "sky" area and the strip just below and decided not to collage that area. Collage is very forgiving and you can choose to add papers to all the painting or selected areas. The entire area had a map background but it can barely be seen in the finished piece.

My collage friend, Suzy Pal from Plains, TX posted on her FB page a very funny video of a baby laughing when a piece of paper was torn and we very much related to how we feel about tearing our paper for our collages, along with a few sticky fingers and bits of paper on the floor, makes for happy times; however, I have never laughed like this sweet baby.

During the Friday evening demo my Pittsburgh Steeler's helmet collage sold at the FWCAC.

The Dutch Art Gallery, Dallas, is hosting Summer Saturday workshops and Pat Meyer will be giving an oil workshop on painting roses June 16 and I've signed up and I do hope I can paint a rose by the end of the day. Pat paints roses beautifully.
