Abstract Watercolor Journal Page by Nancy Standlee

This is about 4.5 inch square abstract watercolor that I've decided to use in my journal. It is from a class I took from Angie Vangalis the evening of April 14 at the Jaycee Center for the Arts in Irving. Below is the instructions I followed. The pencil lines in the background are 5 words chosen from a poem which are connected and the ink lines were made by writing one word and stretching it out. The dark black line is from Sumi Ink. Oh, how I wish for every workshop and class I've ever taken that I had made a journal entry with the palette colors and an example of a painting.
This journal is a Raffine Art Sketch, 100 lb. paper, 9" x 12" and 48 sheets.

"The Board of Directors" ~ Watercolor ~ by Daily Painter Nancy Standlee

"The Board of Directors"

9 x 12 inches Watercolor
Strathmore Bristol Smooth 100 lb.
Watercolor and collage and charcoal

Liz Hill:
I've been busy gathering supplies for the
3 day Liz Hill workshop. I know I'm taking too much "stuff" but when the supply list has watercolor, gouache, acrylic and collage paper, isn't that just about your whole studio? We will be working on hot press watercolor paper. Liz from the Woodlands, is one of the Daily Painters of Texas and that is where I first saw her work and love what she does with line and wash.
Alex Powers:
Liz said in an email that she liked Alex Powers work and his book, "Painting People in Watercolor" so I've revisited the book and have gotten weary of packing and had to try out some charcoal line drawing (6B soft) on a Strathmore Bristol tablet I had. (Alex uses Strathmore 2 ply in the book.) His take (probably) on my attempt "Read the book again". He will be in the area in 2011 and I plan to take his workshop then.
The Model:
We will have a model each day and I thought I might need a little warm up to keep the anxiety to a minimum level. In the small piece above, I added some collage pieces of a metroplex map from the newspaper, a stamp, a piece of gold paper, a hand decorated paper and some text, then I can't leave the gold pen alone. I should be spending time on improving my drawing skills. I hate to be drawing figures in a group from a live model. I'll try to stay in the back and cover my work when anyone gets near. And I'm really not comfortable when the model takes a break and walks around to view how I've drawn her.. and then trying to explain that unflattering something ..hummm, well, I ... I haven't drawn in a while or I need to warm up more...I wonder if she'll believe those old lines.
Visit again to see the work from the workshop and I think you'd enjoy a visit to Liz's blog and an exhibit.

"Candy Corn Dreams" ~ Acrylic Figurative with Birds ~ Daily Painter Nancy Standlee

"Candy Corn Dreams"

10" w x 12" ht.
Acrylic on paper
Contact NancyStandlee@sbcglobal.net

O.K. you say "About this title?" - is it the color or shape or the season? Or am I Halloween candy corn hungry? It could be all of the above.
I've found that candy makers consider some of the same principles that artists think about. Watch this delightful YouTube video on the making of Candy Corn and listen for the statements about color, shape and texture (or mouth feel in this case).
YouTube Video
Do you have a favorite Candy Corn story? I have a friend who buys Candy Corn on sale the day after Halloween and freezes it for the year ahead. Now that's loving Candy Corn.

This could be a "Lylas" with birds or on steroids (I just had to say that). More "Lylas" Love You Like a Sister can be found on my web site HERE -

Red Rock Abstract ~ Texas Daily Painter Nancy Standlee

"Red Rock Abstract"
6" x 6" squares

Abstracts:
I have a page on my web site filled with small abstracts with a little texture, http://nancystandlee.com/small_original_paintings.html. I really like their simplicity and the fact they are small but can make a statement. This week I saw one of Carol Nelson's abstracts, Shining Through, talk about texture, oh, wow. I've been emailing her and she was kind enough to share some of her "texture ways" and besides I've read or skimmed her blog posts about the geologic paintings. She works large and is having a workshop in October in Colorado but I can't make it so I tried using some modeling paste on these minis. Carol likes liquid acrylics and I have some and tried them but I don't have the handle on them yet so I went back to my tube acrylics. These started out with a figure but the subject changed several times and there are numerous layers and some metallic and pearlized paint somewhere in the layers.
These may be going to the Dutch Art Gallery for the Daily Painters of Texas show and since it will be nearing Christmas I decided these gallery wrapped edges needed to be red.
Thanks, Carol, for your time and emails. I will get to one of your workshops yet.

"Her Wings Were Never Seen" ~ Acrylic Painting ~ Winsor Newton Competition

"Her Wings Were Never Seen"

Acrylic on Gallery Wrap Canvas
30 x 24 in.

This painting is one of my entries for the Preservation is the Art of the City Show September 11-26 at the Community Arts Center. The exhibit is free and open to the public. Fifty local artists are selected to participate by a jury and a portion of sales will help fund preservation programming for Historic Fort Worth. I am working on 9 entries for this show and the above is the largest.

Winsor & Newton New Acrylics
W & N has developed a new line of acrylics that does not color shift from wet to dry. They are using a translucent binder when wet and it dries clear. The paints remain workable 20% longer than the Finity brand and they are not in the U.S. yet but watch for them. While you're on that home page be sure and click on the red paint spot near the bottom to enter a painting in their competition. You might win some art supplies. No jury here just other artists voting for their favorite painting. At the present my entry is on this page but click to see her because her head is cut off a little bit. This phase closes Sept. 30 and then you can enter again. The best view of the painting is click below on the You Can Vote for them here! link.

After you enter you will receive some code to place on your blog or web site such as this below. Vote for me or enter your own work or do both. Let me know if you enter and I'll vote for you.
