CBC Gallery Opening ~ SWS Entry

SWS Entry
"The Nightingale"
15" x 12"

I received notice that "The Nightingale" has been accepted into the Southwestern Watercolor Society 46th annual membership show in September. This was done with watercolor and collage on 300 pound paper and inspired by attending the Gerald Brommer workshop at the Artists Showplace Gallery.
See blog posts on June 09 and the week earlier.

Canvas by Canvas members, Maryann, Nancy, Connie, (Marlene from the Museum) and Cindy at the Old Post Office and Museum Center in Graham, Texas, as we break for the July 4 parade. There is very interesting reading about the history of the area and exhibits if you click on the link. Thanks to all the volunteers who made our opening day very special. Our paintings will hang there until the first part of September so if you're in the area check out our paintings. This is the first time all of them have been hung together. What a treat to see them all in one place and be reminded of the dedication and work that has gone into their production.
We met early for the 2 hour drive and were welcomed to the museum show by a wonderful staff and group of volunteers. We had some time to step outside the door and under the shade of a large tree enjoy the July 4 parade while some of us enjoyed a lesson in water witching. We loved meeting new friends, having them tell us their favorite works and were surprised by a beautiful lunch before our Graham supporters bid us goodbye. Thanks to Red and his wife, Jay and Martha, Danny, Marlene and Tom and to all our visitors - thanks so much for stopping by and introducing yourselves. You have a treasure in Graham with your museum. Thanks for the invitation to show and visit in your town.
It was hot, hot on the way home (news later said that Graham at 103 was a hot spot of the North Texas area that day.) We had a quick stop at the Weatherford Farmers Market and next weekend is their Peach Festival.
You think you really know someone? Well, think again. One of our members is a big fan of yodeling and that was news to us. She casually mentioned she had gotten a "how-to" CD and had been practicing while driving. You know the rest of the story. Put that sucker in the CD player and we'll all practice the exercises and we got a little hysterical and a few curious glances from other car passengers. We came to the agreement if we could get really good at this yodeling thing and billed ourselves as the Yodeling Collaborative Painters of Texas we'd have the world cornered by uniqueness. Maybe at our shows on opening night we could give a quick demo and wear our little black aprons arm in arm skipping around a gallery. This went on for miles. Blame it on the heat.
If this kid learned how from a tape on YouTube, do you think 8 ladies in ther "middle years" might have a chance?

Remember Star Trek

Janet Rogers Workshop ~ Flowers Watercolor ~ Art Journal Pages

This 21" x 13" watercolor floral was done in the Janet Rogers workshop and I tried out some of her colors and techniques. See the previous post for more information about the workshop. She has 2 excellent dvd's available from Cheap Joe's and you can see a YouTube preview for the portrait here, and for the floral here. This floral dvd is "so Janet" when you hear her say "That's boring. No, I don't like that" and it gives us new courage to quickly change our minds. Janet and her husband Steve are planning a painting trip to Italy and everyone in the class was interested in hearing about this fabulous trip. In my Art Journal this week (really September 22-24) you will see the "ABC project" designed by Karen Foster and Cindy Campbell, and still so new we don't have a sneak peek yet on the Canvas by Canvas web site. But note that we have about 14 new paintings at the Petroleum Club in Fort Worth. Click on the Paintings tab to read about each one. I've ordered books on Vista and I've enrolled in some of HP's free classes online. These are great classes, usually about 4 lessons long and if you don't have time to complete all of them, save the lessons on your hard drive, and review them later. There is a teacher and message board for students to meet and ask questions.
There is always some food involved in my journal and after eating again at
Fish City Grill Arlington and trying a side dish of Cajun Red Beans and Rice I found a package of the small red beans at Albertsons, got out the crock pot and found my directions and experimented. The chef at Fish City had given me a few of the dried beans to carry in my pocket while I searched the grocery stores. My beans were not as tasty but I will cook on top of the stove next time and try some of their suggestions. I substituted some smoked Polish Kielbasa sausage for the Andouille sausage and the purists may cringe. I usually just stick with pinto beans (our Texas red beans) but these small red beans looked like a smaller cousin. Even Wikipedia has an entry for this Louisiana dish and it makes so much it is a great dish to share.

Watercolor Self Portrait ~ Nancy

Self Portrait
Watercolor 15" x 11" 300 lb paper, Elegant Writer pen

I painted this Wednesday as a possible slide entry for a juried show. It was drawn off before the Myrna workshop and before I learned that I'd better write down on the back of the paper what I did to the surface. I may or may not have put a 50/50% solution of matte medium and water on it before painting. I know I used the Elegant Writer and it has been on there so long it did not bleed at all. The pose is a Myrna one for sure. See my post about the Gorilla Pod and how I managed the photos. This photo was taken after our Petroleum Club opening in Fort Worth.
Myrna did a great Willie Nelson drawing on her blog post. I'm getting some material together to paint a portrait of him soon - maybe branch out from these self portraits.
Some of the Canvas by Canvas members (Cindy Y, Karen F, Barbara H and I) made a business trip to Dallas today and we came home with 2 commissions for our collaborative painting group. It's great to have a painting project in the works. While in Dallas, we checked out some Dragon Street galleries, especially Artizen, the scene of Jonas Gerard's performance art. I've mentioned this before but you must see him paint on You Tube. It's about 10 minutes of spellbinding painting in action.
We made a must stop at Asels Art Supply for more art supplies, even some charcoal to maybe work from the Alex Powers book, Painting People in Watercolor. The used copies on Amazon start at $40.00 to $100.00 so it's a great one for your painting library so watch for it at garage sales.

LYLAS 3 ~ "Karen" ~ Gringo Revolution ~ Young at Heart ~ Young Heart Attack

LYLAS 3
SOLD
LYLAS 3 "Karen" Acrylic
9" x 12" Gallery Wrapped Canvas, 3/4" profile black (depth)
This is the third in the Lylas series. See this post to read how the paintings came to be.
I came in late last Wednesday from the SWS meeting and I TiVoed the news and it ran into Nightline and I'm so glad as I saw this "older group" "Young at Heart" who sing rock and roll hits and they have a documentary movie that opened in some cities that day. It showed them at rehearsal and singing at a prison and doing a show. The fellow shown in this video had a singing partner that had died a few weeks before so he does a solo and the leader said that was a big problem dealing with the death of fellow performers. About 70 have died that have participated. The show left a big message to find something you love doing in your later years. I have watched Fred Knittle singing Coldplay's "Fix You". I'd never heard of Coldplay before but I sure enjoy Fred's rendition and I've watched it several times since. For a real treat please watch it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2u6k-99qcCE Look how many times this you tube clip has been viewed!! What an upper and they have others to watch such as "Staying Alive". I want to be sure and catch the movie.
Watch Coldplay sing their version if you can spare the time. I love this song.

Maryann, a Canvas by Canvas member, has a daughter Jenn who has a rock band "Young Heart Attack". I think it would be so cool if they could play together some time - the "Young Heart Attack" and the "Young at Heart". Jenn's group has just returned from an engagement in London and Spain.

My son, Eric (Harpoon), plays the harmonica in a band, Ray Diffee and the Gringo Revolution, and they won a battle of the bands (approximately 20 bands) contest over the weekend. Eric has a My Space with more about the band and slide shows. He is a self taught harmonica player and years ago worked as a P.I. and in lonely stretches of time would practice on the harmonica.
I have another son, Brad, who just had a 50th birthday and we celebrated with a cruise on the Granbury Riverboat. Brad got to spend a few days with me in Sam Miguel at the Mel Stabin workshop. It was a new experience being in a different city and traveling together and we're ready to have a repeat performance.
Here are some photos
with Eric, my daughter, Dana, and Brad from the Birthday Cruise.

"Our Crystal Bridge" ~ Heaven to Earth Art Project ~ Acrylic Figures

"Our Crystal Bridge"
20" x 20" Acrylic on gallery wrapped canvas, 3/4" profile
$600.00 available from the Heaven to Earth site.

I first saw mention of the Heaven to Earth Art Project on the Marina Petro blog. This is a collaboration of artists all over the world creating and submitting a work of art and the work should be a new, original work so it is fresh, spontaneous and NOW and comes through them based on the theme "Bridging Heaven and Earth".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xTu-G7xaOgs

The purpose of the Heaven to Earth International project is for the vibration of love and oneness.
This is the statement I submitted with my work:

"International travels and art workshops have shown me the oneness and sameness of mankind – our shared hopes, love and dreams for our family and friends. Our bridge and connection is this love and our great Teacher told us to “Love One Another” and the heart symbol in the painting is there to remind us of this admonition. The heart symbol also reminds us to look on the heart instead of the outward appearance. This original Bridge work was painted this week while I was surrounded by my loving group of collaborative painting friends, http://www.canvasbycanvas.com. The energizing faceless figures in the painting have the same look and style and they symbolize the oneness of humanity all over the planet but they appear on different levels as each one is bridging this journey at their own pace. May we come to the realization that we’re here to take care of each other and love each other."

This is the link to see my page on the Heaven to Earth Art Project.

Sunflower Painting ~ Summer Friends ~ Thru the Bible Radio ~ Art Blog

$80.00

11" x 15" Watercolor
This summer has brought changes in my lifestyle as I've become interested in blogging and in some weight issues. ( See Post in Artist Food Network) and for the past two weeks I've begun a walking program. I have listened to Thru the Bible Radio off and on for years but this is the way I'm listening while I walk. On the home page you will see a free MP3 Download option.

WELCOME! Thru The Bible is a 30-minute Bible study radio program that takes the listener through the entire Bible in just 5 years, going back and forth between the Old and New Testaments. This Bible study program has been aired on radio stations in the U.S. since 1967, and is now being produced in over 100 languages around the world.

Because the mission of Thru the Bible Radio is to take the whole Word to the whole world, we are making these files available to you free of charge for your personal use.

John Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904. Dr. McGee remarked, "When I was born and the doctor gave me the customary whack, my mother said that I let out a yell that could be heard on all four borders of Texas!"

How To Download:

Please note that these zipped MP3 files are large and therefore suitable for download only by using a high-speed internet connection. Dial-up users are advised not to attempt to download them. To begin the download, simply click on one of the primary download links in the first two columns and choose where on your computer you'd like the zipped file to be saved. Before you can play the MP3s, they must be unzipped or extracted back into individual mp3 files. To do this you will need a zipping software (such as WinZip or the Extraction Wizard in Windows XP) to unzip the file. Once they have been downloaded and unzipped, you can begin studying the Bible along with Dr. McGee!

Hints: Download to your Desktop and on the last Extract choice of the original file you are trying to extract - (Extract to Title of what you have downloaded or you’ll have files all over the desktop.) Right click on the Last extract. Delete the original book type icon and start saving all the Bible Books to a folder. I save the current Book only and delete it when I’ve finished listening to save room on my Samsung Digital Audio Player. It’s easier for me to just start playing where I’ve left off the day before. I tie the Sportline Step Counter around my waist and when I return from about a 30 minute walk, I post the activity on the Calorie Counter Plus site.
With a MP3 player download you can start anywhere you like in the J. Vernon McGee broadcast and listen when it’s convenient. I am listening to these chapters as I walk in this Texas August heat and each day I look forward to my chapters and my walk as I find walking needs a little something extra. Walking is a priority as I’ve mentioned before as some of my collaborative painting group from Canvas by Canvas are in a weight loss war and the weigh in date is drawing near, September 4. There is a cash bonus involved plus the benefit of some better fitting jeans.

If you like a little religious humor, you might find this worth looking at; however, there are several comments posted pro and con about the Baptism Cannonball.

Daffodil Painting ~ Starry Night ~ Lorelle VanFossen

$40.00
Daffodil Series #3 of 4

5”x7” watercolor with a light beige mat to fit 8”x10” frame

What is your favorite Van Gogh painting? Yesterdays post introduced 2 daffodil paintings and you visited YouTube to hear that wonderful tribute in song to Vincent Van Gogh and Starry, Starry Night and to see the slide show of some of Van Gogh's paintings. Starry Night is special to me because it was my oldest son’s favorite painting when Van Gogh’s paintings were introduced into the school art curriculum in his elementary school days.

For more information on Starry Night go to the Van Gogh Gallery

Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh has risen to the peak of artistic achievements. Although Van Gogh sold only one painting in his life, the aftermath of his work is enormous. Starry Night is one of the most well known images in modern culture as well as being one of the most replicated and sought after prints. From Don McLean's song 'Starry, Starry Night' (Based on the Painting), to the endless number of merchandise products sporting this image, it is nearly impossible to shy away from this amazing painting. For the Bloggers:

Because I’m a “newbie” blogger, belong to a group of collaborative artists, Canvas by Canvas, and some have joined me in the Blogosphere, I give a hint or tip in my blogs when I find something of note – especially something about blogging. This morning C/NET News on my Yahoo page, staff writer Elinor Mills wrote an article “Please Don’t Steal This Web Content” about Lorelle VanFossen and her popular blog on blogging and her views on copyright laws. (Artists are always thinking about copyright laws such as whose photograph is that? Did you take it? Who took it? On and on…) This morning I learned about software bots that copy thousands of blog posts and republish on sites using ads to generate $$$. These sites are know as new word --“scraper sites”. The article gives some ways VanFossen gets around this practice.

At this stage of my blogging life, I like to read blogs about blogging. Do I hear a suppressed yawn out there? Ok, so finding an unused steno pad or a new yellow lined tablet at my house makes me ecstatic. To find my long lost stapler in a pile of papers makes me do the happy dance. (My daughter mentioned last weekend she hoped no one struck a match around here.) So back to BAB (blogs about blogging) and I plan to tag Lorelle’s site on Del.icio.us ( I Love Del.icio.us) . Fellow CBC painters, Lorelle uses WordPress and we use Blogger but I’m sure we can benefit when we check out some hints on her BAB. Painting, blogging, and music makes me do another happy dance.

Sketch the trees and daffodils ~ Daffodil Paintings ~ Vincent (Starry, Starry Night) ~ Fechr

Daffodil #1

Daffodil #2

40.00 EACH
Daffodil #1 and #2 in a series of 4
5" x 7" watercolor matted to 8" x 10", light beige mat

The daffodil series reminded me of a line from Vincent (Starry, Starry Night) Sketch the trees and the daffodils. If you want to listen to a musical tribute to a great artist from a poetic songwriter listen and watch this on YouTube - Vincent.

It is hauntingly beautiful, painful, lovely and lonely all at the same time. Take a few minutes and watch a slide show of some of Vincent's paintings while listening to

Starry, Starry Night by Don McLean.

Vincent(Starry,Starry Night)Starry, starry night.
Paint your palette blue and grey,
Look out on a summer's day,
With eyes that know the darkness in my soul.
Shadows on the hills,
Sketch the trees and the daffodils,
Catch the breeze and the winter chills,
In colors on the snowy linen land.

Now I understand what you tried to say to me,
How you suffered for your sanity,
How you tried to set them free.
They would not listen, they did not know how.
Perhaps they'll listen now.

Starry, starry night.
Flaming flowers that brightly blaze,
Swirling clouds in violet haze,
Reflect in Vincent's eyes of china blue.
Colors changing hue, morning field of amber grain,
Weathered faces lined in pain,
Are soothed beneath the artist's loving hand.

Now I understand what you tried to say to me,
How you suffered for your sanity,
How you tried to set them free.
They would not listen, they did not know how.
Perhaps they'll listen now.

For they could not love you,
But still your love was true.
And when no hope was left in sight
On that starry, starry night,
You took your life, as lovers often do.
But I could have told you, Vincent,
This world was never meant for one
As beautiful as you.

Starry, starry night.
Portraits hung in empty halls,
Frameless head on nameless walls,
With eyes that watch the world and can't forget.
Like the strangers that you've met,
The ragged men in the ragged clothes,
The silver thorn of bloody rose,
Lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow.

Now I think I know what you tried to say to me,
How you suffered for your sanity,
How you tried to set them free.
They would not listen, they're not listening still.
Perhaps they never will...

Don McLean - (Vincent) Starry, starry Night
