On the Rocks, 12090 torn paper mixed media collage abstract and High Heel Shoe Collage Workshop by Nancy Standlee, Texas Contemporary Artist

On the Rocks
24x12 torn paper collage abstract mixed media on canvas

I chose a vertical format for long thin strips of magazine papers and vintage stamps, covered with glazes of acrylic paint and highlighted with lines of acrylic paint. See the close up below:

The sides are painted a neutral gray with some of the paint hovering at the outside edge of the painting with more black marks. The painting is signed on the side so it could be hung horizontally or vertically. The title comes from early images I'd used from a Sedona tourist magazine and there are two large images that say "Sedona" in the early layers. (I've never been to Sedona but it's on my list to take a workshop there so I'd ordered information about the area and "On the Rocks" was some text that came from this information.)

The painting can be seen at my online art gallery at Daily Paintworks HERE.

WORKSHOP:
I've recently given a one day high heel collage workshop in Dallas (June 2 at the Dutch Art Gallery) now I'm heading west to give one at the Fort Worth Community Arts Center, July 21, 2012. For more information click HERE.
No stress. I'll furnish the image for the high heel and no prior art experience needed. Come expecting to have an enjoyable day and return home with a 12" high heel torn paper collage. You bring a limited supply list and expect to go home with new ideas and make some new friends.
The supply list is available on the link or call Elaine Taylor 817.298.3021 or email gallerymanager@fwcac.org or Rachel Pope rachel@artscouncilfw.org to register. The one day class is $125.00.
Below is a photo I took yesterday of the front of the FWCAC after I picked up my collage exhibit. (I had 16 pieces in the exhibit and sold 7 during the show). This will be a great place for a workshop with lots of room and there is a cafe in the building for a quick lunch at Z's Cafe.
This high heel shoe sold during the exhibit.

FWCAC
HAND TRUCK:
I am always on the search for art supplies and then how to manage them. This hand truck was taken on it's maiden run yesterday and proved worthy with 9 paintings loaded and all in one trip to the car. Click HERE to see where I purchased it at Hand Trucks "R" Us. This particular model's handle doesn't telescope but they do have another model that does. I debated. Here it is loaded into a plastic tub with bungee cords. I put the collages, back to back,  into garbage bags for some protection. Note to self (when taking pictures of a white subject use a dark background)

I've also added it to my Art Supply board on Pinterest.
Here is a good article about Pinterest.

ART BOOKS
Leslie Saeta hosts Artists Helping Artists weekly radio program on blog talk radio the  program June 12, 2012 was devoted to expanding your art library with the "best" art books suggestions submitted by their listeners. I know I have over half of these and then went to Amazon and put the rest on my wish list. The website and blog has an Amazon widget you may or may not can see giving the books they talked about as it depends on which browser you are using. I use Firefox and could not see it but when I looked using IE there it was. I know strange.

TV:
Lonesome Dove was on again not too long ago and I saved it and recently I watched parts 1 and 2 and "fixin'" to go watch part 3.. I thought it was the best thing I've ever seen first time around and wasn't so sure I wanted to burst my bubble.. I'd forgotten just how mean Blue Duck was.. and later  I'll have to watch Gus die... that was the biggest blunder in all bookdom.. we could still be watching.. Gus in Montana, Gus goes to Wyoming.. Gus explores the northwest, Gus and Clara secret love child...Larry McMurtry.. you messed up!!

Facebook
I saw this funny saying on FB and I'll have to share as it really called my name. "Today's Housekeeping Tip"  Always keep several get well cards on the mantel. That way, if unexpected guests arrive, they'll think you've been sick and unable to clean". I had to add a comment "run hide the painting you've been working on all day and throw on your robe, hold a wash rag (wash rag, dates me doesn't it)

HEB. Granbury. Art in the Cart
I will be at the HEB grocery store in Granbury TX July 7 set up near the Coffee Grinder 12-4 with my collage. Stop by and see me glue!! with my new plastic tubs!!

PLASTIC TUBS AND EGGPLANTS:
I have been chasing plastic tubs at every variety of dollar store in the metroples, Garden Ridge, and the upscale Container Store, trying to find the "just right" tub to sort collage papers in as I've recently made some bad tub choices and I'm being overrun with tubs!! (with a lid, without, stacking, dishpans, litter pans, clear) I must try them all. Why do I do this? I do the same thing with eggplants. I've never seen an eggplant I didn't want to buy. I don't cook them. Just buy them.

Cheap Joe's Summer Art Contest at Facebook..vote for me!!
I entered this with a collage of one of my sons along with about 727 others .. scroll down and you can jump to the page of choice.  If the pages don't change Stoney, Music and Motorcycles is on page 30 (it has ONE vote...mine) lol.. 2nd image top left. Click HERE.

The blue background behind the strawberry is acrylic paint the rest is painted and found papers I collaged and some text that says Fairy Godmother and Cinderella from a children's book. Here is a photo of the papers spread out in color sections getting ready to start gluing on the painted image. The paper on left, brown diamonds and metallic goes around the outside edges. Some of the stripes on the cup are metallic paints.

The work table.
I'm Published!
I felt a little like Cinderella yesterday when I received my copy of Painting with Mixed Media , Guhin and Greenman. I have 3 paintings included.
This "Frida" image was from an art journaling workshop I taught. Read more about it HERE and I taught the this particular Love Your Life art journaling workshop at the Wenmohs Ranch.

The Texas Cactus is an oil pastel and you can read more about it HERE and also see some of the hand painted metallic papers used in the cupcake and it is available HERE on Daily Paintworks.
The figure "Jessie" is truly mixed media with watercolor, charcoal, acrylic and collage with a little gold gesso in the mix. The photo is from a model from the Liz Hill workshop in Houston where I learned some of these mixed media techniques and the painting is in my private collection.

I probably should have hired a professional photographer for this head shot instead of using my FlexPod tripod and a timer or at least I should have cleaned off my kitchen counter..oh, well, maybe next time or not?

Here is the Amazon link for the book HERE

The publisher, Stackpole Books HERE

I hope you enjoy the book and try out a technique or two and email me if you have any questions about collaging a cupcake. They are fun and easy to do.
I will be at the HEB grocery store on July 7, 2012 from 12-4 with some of the cupcake collages and working on one in progress (or eating one) this is a wonderful, brand new store. This HEB store is in Granbury, TX. Click HERE for more info about the store.

Cupcake Torn Paper Collage Painting, Arles: City in France, 12084 and Daily Paintworks "Artist Spotlight and Giveaway" by Texas Daily Painter Nancy Standlee

Arles:City in France, 12084
Torn and Hand Painted Paper Collage on canvas
8x8x3/4" depth canvas

Purchase at: Daily Paintworks
See at my online gallery at Daily Paintworks

The title is from text from a crossword puzzle and the very base background is an old TX map but it has been covered in several layers. Music covers the edges and I worked on this while docent duties at the LGAA Saturday June 9 in Granbury.
I've never been to Arles but I'm a big fan of Vincent Van Gogh's works. He produced over 300 paintings and drawings while in Arles, including Starry Night. Van Gogh is probably better known generally than any other painter and many can relate as he didn't start until later in life but he died at age 37 and sold few paintings during his lifetime. I've read Letters to Theo and have an Amazon order on the way now for The Yellow House by Gaylord, details on 9 weeks in Arles with Gauguin. It should make for a good summer read about how they worked and what inspired them.

I get inspired by having collage papers where I can find them and I've developed several methods of dealing with so much paper, hand painted and found papers. Here are two methods I use, a plastic bin with drawers and I can sort by a color category and a smaller version of little labeled tubs I found at Garden Ridge. These are for the hand painted papers. Later I'll post the magazine papers. I'm posting these because I love seeing inside artists' studios (a legal way to be a peeping Tom?)

I really like these as they stack and I've labeled them with color names.

Some close up views of the above collage:
The sides are from a very old music book, circa 1915 and pages are very brittle and some text below is from foreign language newspapers and stamped hand painted papers.

This is the foundation painting before I began the gluing process and I changed my mind on the color scheme after the process began which is always permissible.

I recently sold this torn paper collage from the Daily Paintworks Gallery and DPW has a special promotion now "Artist Spotlight and Giveaway" that IF you purchase a painting from the DPW site within the last 30 days you are eligible to enter 4 times in the giveaway. Each week a different DPW artist will give away one of their best paintings. Go to the homepage and click on the icon at the left to read more about it HERE.http://www.dailypaintworks.com/

Mixed Media Trees with Collage, 12086, abstracted landscape by Texas Artist Nancy Standlee

Mixed Media Landscape, Trees with Collage 12086
Ampersand Gessobord with 2" cradle
8"x16"x2"

See at my online gallery at Daily Paintworks

I finished this day 3 of the recent Carol Nelson workshop in Granbury and used layers to create this vibrant abstracted tree painting. Textured areas with Custom Patch and collaged tree areas with painted watercolor paper and collage bushes with shotgun range paper, pierced through with "bird holes". We made foam stamps of leaves and stamped some areas in the layering process.

Save the date:
Carol Nelson will be at the Wenmohs Ranch, February 25-28, 2013.

Cupcake Torn Paper Collage Painting, "Big Night", 12083 by Texas Collage Artist Nancy Standlee

Big Night, 12083
Torn Paper Collage Painting with Hand Painted Papers on Canvas
8x8x3/4" depth gallery wrapped canvas

On Friday night, June 8, the FWCAC held their monthly gallery opening receptions and I sat up a demo in the entry area and worked on this small cupcake collage and the title comes from some text in the collage and it was a "big night" for all of the artists who were exhibiting their work. My collage exhibit is still up in the Cafe area until June 29, click HERE for more info.

Here are some close-up views of the collage and I added music papers around the edge similar to the collage shown here. The music pages around the edges are so brittle the pages fall apart when folded as they are from a 1915 music book. Other papers I hand designed and painted. Recently I gave a one day workshop at the Dutch Art Gallery, Dallas, on torn paper collage using magazine pages with a high heel image but this method is a little different as you paint your own papers. I will give a one day workshop in this painted paper method and we will collage a cupcake. No date is set yet but if you are interested send me an email and I'll add your name to the list.

Close up photos below

(this side is from the Arles cupcake that has not been posted yet but it is similar)

This is the acrylic foundation painting I did on the canvas before I began the collage process. I liked the blue "sky" area and the strip just below and decided not to collage that area. Collage is very forgiving and you can choose to add papers to all the painting or selected areas. The entire area had a map background but it can barely be seen in the finished piece.

My collage friend, Suzy Pal from Plains, TX posted on her FB page a very funny video of a baby laughing when a piece of paper was torn and we very much related to how we feel about tearing our paper for our collages, along with a few sticky fingers and bits of paper on the floor, makes for happy times; however, I have never laughed like this sweet baby.

During the Friday evening demo my Pittsburgh Steeler's helmet collage sold at the FWCAC.

The Dutch Art Gallery, Dallas, is hosting Summer Saturday workshops and Pat Meyer will be giving an oil workshop on painting roses June 16 and I've signed up and I do hope I can paint a rose by the end of the day. Pat paints roses beautifully.

Cupcake Collage, 12082, "Oh, I Am a Lucky Boy!", Torn Paper Painting by Texas Collage Artist Nancy Standlee

Cupcake Collage, 12082
"Oh, I Am a Lucky Boy!" title from some of the text in the torn paper collage
8x8x3/4" on gallery wrapped canvas

See at my online gallery at Daily Paintworks

There is a map background, faint, other text is "good walk, Cinderella, They were all very, very hungry, music notes and recipes, (faint) with music notes paper going around the outside edge. I painted and stained these found papers.
I will show this cupcake collage Friday evening 6-9 PM at the Fort Worth Community Arts Center, 1300 Gendy St, Fort Worth during the receptions for art exhibits opening this evening. I have a collage exhibit in the cafe area.
Also Saturday I will be a docent at the Shanley House in Granbury 10:00 am - 1:30 pm and will be working on a cupcake collage so if you are in the area for either place stop by and say hello.
I recently gave a one day torn paper magazine paper collage workshop where we worked on a high heel shoe. I am developing a one day workshop using this method of collage of painting and staining our own papers using a cupcake design. So if you want to be put on the workshop list, send me an email. No dates yet.

I began the collage by painting the design in acrylic like the painting below then paint and adhere the paper and varnish.

Tulip Collage, 12081, Caol Nelson Workshop, Granbury, Day 4 by Nancy Standlee Texas Collage Artist

Tulip Collage, 12081
10x8" on Ampersand Gessobord 1" deep cradle with collaged sides

Day 4 of the experimental acrylics with Carol Nelson in Granbury TX using a variety of mixed media materials and techniques and no, you haven't missed days 1-3, I'm starting at the end and working backwards, just keeping you on your toes.  Tulip was on Day 4, torn paper paintings and this looks nothing like the piece I worked on during the workshop as it has gone through several transformations back in my home studio. The original flower area texture was built up with custom patch and painted with acrylics and now I've added collage.
We made some of our collaged papers by a shaving cream method Carol discovered on Pinterest that gave some delicate stained papers. My class neighbor shared some of her Japanese newspapers and I added more when I got home with crossword puzzle pages, a math book, and atlas pages and some were stained with acrylics.
I was fortunate to come home with Carol's "Spring Has Sprung", 8x6 that she used as a teaching piece. It is on MDF board.

I "borrowed" one of Carol's photos of the view outside the Shanley House where the workshop was held.

Here is Carol teaching us about Custom Patch texturing.

These friends are still smiling on the last day..always a good sign of a good workshop. And if you're friends of Carol on FB she has posted an album of photos from the Granbury workshop and lots of student work.

Early morning critiques from the paintings from the day before.. lots of room in the gallery and we could have a separate room for drying, ironing the wax out of our faux batik's and critique.

It has been a busy week as I taught a one day collage workshop at the Dutch Art Gallery June 2 and just a reminder there will be Saturday workshops given all summer and you can see the schedule HERE. The one coming up this week is Liz Hill and I've signed up for the following week painting roses with Pat Meyer, June 16.  I was first on the list with my collage high heel and there are plans for a follow up so it's not too late if you missed the first class, just call Pam Massar 214 348-7350 and put your name on the list. Here is the Dutch Art Gallery link with more information.

Pigeon Torn Paper Collage, "Paris Pigeon, 12080 by Texas Daily Painter and Collage Artist Nancy Standlee

Torn Paper Collage Sculpture on Wood Base

This was a new experience collaging a pigeon. One time I collaged my 4 year old sons broken leg cast with him in it after he had scooted around the floor and just worn it off. I put him on the kitchen table and got out paper and glue and patched it back together. I had a similar experience with this little recycled guy. He came to me with a detached foot and I had to perform several operations to attach it and this is why one ankle is slightly larger than the other. Now to the why I'm buried knee deep in pigeon collage instead of putting up art supplies from weeks of workshop travel.  I'd just finished up a 4 day Carol Nelson workshop in Granbury (posts are in the works,) and on Saturday I gave a one day collage workshop in Dallas at the Dutch Art Gallery, and did a blue high heel as my demo. See previous post HERE and Sunday I met with some of my Canvas by Canvas peeps to paint pigeons. It seems the Parks Mall was donating the pigeons to River Legacy Park for an auction/fundraiser in the fall, November 9, 2012, and my friend, Maryann, got us 5 to decorate. Since my boxes of blue papers were nearby from the Saturday workshop I chose to have a blue pigeon and I'd saved the ad from my favorite recent movie, Midnight in Paris, and used some of those papers.
Foot Repair:
River Legacy wanted them on a base and my pigeon was disabled. I went to my favorite Home Depot, searched around in their left over lumber bin and had an end wood piece cut off, all for .51 cents. I attached the feet with Gorilla Glue, then as an added precaution, added heavy gel medium on top and collaged pieces to cover those little feet. Mr. Pigeon was not balanced as he was missing a long toe and I think I probably should have added a little dowel in the front breast area for him to rest on or hang a sign around his neck "carry me by my base". Anyway, he was a learning experience and he was heavily textured to begin with and I used liquid medium to attach the torn papers because I didn't have the gel with me on Sunday but it worked by applying it liberally but I would recommend the gel when you collage a pigeon.
To read more about the project click HERE and you will be taken to a PDF file.

Liz will hold a figure workshop this Saturday and I recommend it and have taken her figure workshop in Houston but she also does pigeons which I dearly love. I covet Liz Hill's pigeons and do wish I'd done them first. I have a beloved Baptist Hymnal that was weeded when my De Leon church got new books and I could collage those precious pages. I think I've already torn out "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and that's bad because it was the only song I could play on the piano. My collage class on Saturday kept asking is it o.k. to mix this or add this to my collage.. it's always YES.. look at Liz's work as she mixes watercolor, acrylic, charcoal, collage.. even her blog is called "Irreverent Art".  But I'm calling my future Liz Hill knock off pigeon collage, a dove collage because I have more emotional connections to doves than pigeons but that is another post.

Here is one of Liz's wonderful bird paintings:

Wild Friends, 12079, Torn Paper Collage High Heel Painting and Workshop Paintings by Nancy Standlee, Texas Daily Painter

Wild Friends, 12079
Torn Paper High Heel Collage Painting on Gallery Wrapped Canvas
12x12x1.5"

This was my demo piece for the June 2 one day torn paper collage workshop at the Dutch Art Gallery. I had 5 enthusiastic students ready to learn and step out of their comfort zone and experiment with a new medium. Each did a spectacular job as evidenced in the 3 photos below. There may be a follow up workshop in the fall. Requests were made for a portrait collage workshop. These students will be ready for an advanced class.
