Rose Oil Floral, Day 4, Hedi Moran Workshop, Scottsdale AZ and a Fall Sketchbook Journal Workshop by Nancy Standlee Texas Artist

Roses and Teapot 14021
16x20 Oil on 3/4" depth canvas
Available on Daily Paintworks

This was painted on day 4 of the Hedi Moran workshop at the Scottsdale Artist School, and she lives in Scottsdale,  and read more about it on previous posts. Hedi is a native of Norway and is there now teaching workshops. She is known for her florals and for using a very special "Hedi brush" by Princeton and that is available at the http://www.arizonaartsupply.com/. Just ask for the Hedi brush. Here is a photo on Dick Blick's site and they are called Children's brushes and as you see a very reasonable in price. I've seen her paint the whole painting using just this brush but then I think it's her touch instead of the brush!

Because I've recently taken a David Rankin workshop in Kanuga and then Roz Stendahl for a week in Sketchbook Skool, I sorta fancied myself that I might draw animals!! Not!! On my arrival on Sunday in Phoenix before the workshop I decided to check out their zoo with my camera and sketchbook. I enjoyed walking around and the first thing I saw was a Texas longhorn. I definitely need more study before I can draw a giraffe. I got sooo hot I had to call one of the Rangers to retrieve me with one of the golf carts and all the time thinking "you are not ready for drawing zoo animals" but Fort Worth has a great zoo and I may try it again.

Suzy Pal is getting a new studio gallery in order and has invited me to Plains TX October 17-18, 2014 to give a 2 day sketchbook journaling workshop. See more details on my website at http://nancystandlee.com under workshops and sign up by writing Suzy at Suzy_pal2000@yahoo.com. This is a description about the workshop I sent to Suzy today:

This two day workshop is all about you and how to record some of your life events.

This sketchbook journaling workshop will be an introduction to sketchbook journaling with pen and watercolor and will focus on YOU with  a "Love Your Life" theme. We will explore choices in sketchbooks and paints and palettes, examine some great reference books and I will demo techniques I use to keep various sketchbook journals. The student does not need any previous art experience or drawing experience but just needs to come with the desire to explore some possibilities of preserving some moments on their life journey. For example, we usually have some type of hot beverage each morning and it is a great beginning for an entry. We will begin with a structured lesson like this and then students will be able to add their personal experiences to their journals for Day One. On Day Two, we will explore travel journals and architecture and people drawings.
After sign up a supply list will be mailed with more details.
Some more details can be found on my website at http://NancyStandlee.com under workshops.

Landscape Workshop with Irma Ward, River Legacy Park Oil Painting, by Texas Artist Nancy Standlee

River Legacy Park 14023
Oil 8x10 on linen panel

Painting the Landscape workshop with Irma Ward, May 23 and 24 in Arlington...hey, guess what? I stayed home and painted locally and what fun. I haven't had much experience with plein air painting and the weather has been very nice in Texas so I signed up for a two day landscape with Irma and it was a great way to be outside, learn something new and paint with friends. Irma has a very spacious upstairs studio in her home and the first day was theory (9-4) in the studio and on her patio and in the afternoon a small backyard color study. (I missed that part). The second day we met at River Legacy Park for painting on site. I had been admiring the purple thistles blooming along the roadside and knew right away I wanted to incorporate them into my painting.

Irma supplied the 8x10 Claessens #66 linen panels from Plein Air Panels and they are nearby to save on shipping and I have picked up a few in Kennedale for another workshop.
This workshop was right on because:
1. Short walk to car
2. Shady spot
3. Weather was perfect
4. Fun companions
5. Instructor who knew how to teach
6. Lunch was delivered

I am pretty anal about my art supplies and I want to bring exactly what's on the supply list, even to the same size pencil..sad, I know but on Irma's demo Saturday morning when I asked my usual question, "Which brush are you using?" Irma "#10 Bristlon flat"!! After a short recovery that my Bristlon was at home and I had the natural bristle brushes that was on the supply list I recovered and produced two 8x10 paintings.

Irma is a very generous instructor who provided handouts in a folder, gave us a value viewer, bungee cords, tube opener and her dear husband picked up our lunches after we had chosen from Jason's Deli Menu. Check her website for future workshops HERE.

Irma's palette on the Soltek Easel.

Lunch ready and delivered. How cool is this, eating outside with artist friends and then jump right back into chasing that light.

Basket of Blooms, Floral Oil Painting from the Scottsdale Hedi Moran Workshop, Fall Art Journaling Workshop by Arlington TX Artist Nancy Standlee

Basket of Blooms 14020
16x20 Oil on 3/4" traditional gallery wrapped canvas
Available on Daily Paintworks

This was painted on the third day of the 5 day workshop I recently took with Hedi Moran in Scottsdale AZ at the Scottsdale Artists School. See the two previous posts on my blog for more details.
Here are several photos of the facilities and we had our lunch catered and ate out on the shady patio. There were 15 students in the class.

In the last post I showed a glass palette I've "made" and now I'm thinking how will I keep my paints from drying out and when I was in a Dreama Tolle Perry workshop she was using these Paint Savers so I've placed an order from Dick Blick. They look like miniature cake covers. Here is their website for more info. Paint Savers.
These will help save this pretty new color Hedi introduced to us as Shiva Yellow Citron on ASWExpress.

Paris Roses, Oil Painting from the Hedi Moran Workshop, Day 2, Scottsdale, AZ and Sketchbook Skool by Texas Artist Nancy Standlee

Paris Roses 14019
16x20 Oil on traditional depth gallery wrapped canvas 3/4"
Ready to frame and available on Daily Paintworks HERE.

I was in Scottsdale AZ last week painting with Hedi Moran and 14 others in a floral workshop held at the Scottsdale Artists School and I painted this on a Tuesday. I really like the vase with "Paris" on it. See my previous post for more info about this workshop HERE.
If you'd like to read Hedi's supply list, it's listed on the Quinlan Visual Arts Center site HERE. When she travels she likes to use a small picture frame with glass as her palette (12x16). At home she has a bulletin board, 24x36 that she has covered with glass. In this workshop, she brought a smaller one to use but still large by most standards. Also, check out her Liquin bottle (the brown pill bottle) as it's so hard to get the lids off the Liquin containers she transfers some into an easier opening top.
I am somewhere in the middle as my space is limited. Yesterday I got a bulletin board at Hobby Lobby, cork board, 17x23 and had Ace Hardware to cut a piece of glass and covered the board with gray palette paper, and hot glued the glass on top and it's ready for some painting time. There are no plans to cover it after a painting session is over. It fits perfectly on a folding Wall-Mart table. The lip on the board wasn't very deep so I decided I'd better leave the blue tape on the edges for safety.

On Friday late, before leaving on Sunday, May 4 for AZ,  I was cleaning out my backpack and found two old suckers, Tootsie Pop Caramel Apple, and I decided to eat one and I don't even like suckers, just guess I was bored with packing. Anyhow somehow it got stuck to a front tooth crown and when I tried to get it unstuck out came my tooth and it was impaled on the sucker, sitting straight up. Frantic calls to my dentist, then to an emergency dentist and got it "glued" back in place on Saturday afternoon but I had already decided toothless or not I was going to the workshop. It seems the tooth broke off into the crown so the fix was to glue it to the side teeth also. I told my classmates to look at me smile on Monday because there was a distinct possibility I'd lose it again sometime during the week. It's not fixed yet but I did have to make a journal entry. Usually when I'm on a trip I am so conscious of don't fall down, don't get sick, don't get your backpack stolen and now I'm going to have to add, "Don't pull out your teeth!"
This journal is a 9x6 Aquabee that I took with me to Scottsdale to write in what we painted and where I ate, etc. I've been enrolled for the last 6 weeks in Sketchbook Skool with Danny Gregory and Koosje Koene and this 6 weeks teacher has been Tommy Kane and he had us slow down and draw our kitchen for this week's homework and here is my page below. It seems in my kitchen I have an outside plant trying to get in a window where the kitchen table is and I've enjoyed looking at it's swirling twiggy branches. I thought the over the sink blinds were a little blah so I took some artistic license and moved some of the branches to that area. In the lily container on the sink are paint brushes, palette knives, a hammer along with dish washing supplies. "You might be a redneck if your houseplants aren't in pots". Class resumes July 4 with a new set of instructors. First semester has been great and a lot of fun.

Arizona Sunflowers, Oil, Hedi Moran Workshop, Scottsdale, AZ by Texas Contemporary Artist Nancy Standlee

 Arizona Sunflowers 14018
Oil 20x16 in.
Traditional 3/4" Gallery Wrapped Canvas

I returned yesterday afternoon from a 5 day oil workshop with Hedi Moran, Painting Spring Florals, in Scottsdale, Arizona. The sunflower painting was painted on day 1, Monday, May 5 and by some ingenious packing per Hedi the 5 paintings made it back to Texas with nary a smear. I will be posting roses, hydrangeas, poppies and more in the coming weeks.

The Scottsdale Artist School is housed in a charming white washed historic schoolhouse, with 6 fully equipped studios, student lounge with an extensive book collection, student store and the school is surrounded with a beautiful rose garden (and the roses were used in some of the arrangements). This artist oasis in the Sonoran Desert began 30 years ago in the heart of the Old Town Scottsdale Arts District and there are museums, galleries and good restaurants and boutiques nearby. Here is a link to what Scottsdale has to offer Experience Scottsdale and
Downtown Scottsdale.
This was my first visit to Scottsdale and I do hope to return. Hedi will give another workshop there in February 2015.

More to come about Thirsty Thursday and the Art Walk in the coming posts and some photos of the class.
Below is Nancy and Hedi. This is my second workshop with Hedi and the first one was in Arkansas. I wrote about it on my blog HERE and I had to mention about her promptness in beginning a class and things haven't changed in Hedi world (no class introductions, no how do you do, it's 9:00 and we're off and running. She begins her demo and is finished in about an hour and a half and the rest of the time is spent walking the room helping each student. She says we can get to know each other at lunch..lol and we did and what lunches we had but that's for later. She's a really good instructor with the most "dancing brush" I've ever seen. Hedi is on Facebook if you want to keep up with her workshops (so am I and I love FB friends). Hedi is leaving Wednesday for her home country of Norway and will teach two workshops while there.

Family Abstract, Acrylic, Blue Mesa Illustrations and Sketchbook Skool is in Session by Arlington Texas Contemporary Artist Nancy Standlee

 Family Abstract 14017 SOLD
Acrylic Abstract with Figures
2 30x40 gallery wrapped panels for a 40x60"

I have been working with a client in Austin to come up with a perfect painting for her home. She has worked closely with me and began by giving me the titles of several of my paintings she really liked, then she had her own choice of colors and ideas. I am very pleased with "our" painting and it will be mailed Friday and I hope she likes it in person. I have never worked this large but find I have enjoyed the process and plan on another large abstract soon. I added some texture paste to the canvas before painting. I have other work available at Daily Paintworks and an affordable ArtByte on how to do a torn paper collage.

Most of you are aware of how I love to take workshops and classes, paint and journal. Welcome to Sketchbook Skool. I've been enrolled in this first 6 weeks class and it will be repeated July 4 and a new one "Seeing" will begin. Yes, I'm already signed up again. If you'd like to read more about it here is the link, http://www.sketchbookskool.com/ with Danny Gregory and Koosje Koene. Other teachers have been Prashant Miranda and Jane LaFazio and tomorrow will be Roz Stendahl and then Tommy Kane. His new book has just come out, An Excuse to Draw, and I got my copy today but I'm not going to eat chips while I'm reading it. I don't want to take a bite out of the corner.

Here is the latest sketchbook page I've added to my Stillman & Birn, 9x12, Beta journal. I had a little trouble multitasking while eating lunch and downloading camera journal photos and instead of a blue corn chip to munch on, in goes my smart card right into my mouth. I bit down and noticed a decidedly different texture. Fortunately I wiped off the crumbs, didn't swallow it, and it worked fine. This is another reason I like to journal to record your life besides helping you learn to draw.
Here are some other journal pages:

Yes my new suitcase does look like it has paint splatters on it. I tied a black and white bandana with diamond design on the handle to help me find it! It's by Travelers Choice.
I got matching shoes..lol.. here they are. I didn't get them here but this was a good photo. They actually came from Benges Shoe Store, Grand Junction CO.

May and June we are celebrating our Gulf Seafood Festival with a menu developed by guest chef Sharon Hage. It is one of the four festivals Blue Mesa will offer this year, featuring locally sourced products and great Dallas chefs. The menu includes gulf seafood and combines the southern cooking style found on the gulf coast and Blue Mesa's southwest flavor profile. Gulf crab, oysters, red fish (certified responsibly farmed aquaculture) and crawfish are main ingredients in such dishes as cornmeal crusted oyster tacos with jicama slaw, a crawfish mini-adobe pie and fresh redfish with east Texas green tomato pico.

In the over 25 years we have been in business in Dallas, we have never worked with a better chef then Sharon. She shares our vision of simple yet exciting flavor combinations using fresh, high quality ingredients. Working with local farms and their products has always been a key part of the way she cooks. Sharon was chef-owner of York Street restaurant where she cooked our family some of our favorite meals. She is a multiple nominee for the James Beard award and presently a consultant to several restaurant companies, including Blue Mesa.

A special Gulf Festival dinner buffet on Wednesday, May 14 will showcase the whole festival menu and much more. It will be a Gulf Coast version of our legendary Sunday Brunch. The buffet is $15 per person and includes a cash bar featuring the tequila of Olmeca Altos in a blueberry peach margarita.

More sweet potato chips!
