Hedi Moran Workshop, Day 4, Fayetteville, AR Zinnias, Floral Oil Painting and a One Day Art Journaling Workshop by Texas Artist Nancy Standlee

Zinnias 13062
16x20 Oil on canvas panel

This is my last and 4th day at the Hedi Moran workshop in Arkansas  the last of July and you can read previous posts about other paintings on this blog. When the workshop was over and packing was finished, Hedi and I made a quick run to Bentonville to view the Angels and Tomboys exhibit (girlhood in 19th century American Art) at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art.
We ran into Shirley from our class and she has taken other workshops from Hedi and I bet I run into her again. I would encourage you to take a Hedi workshop if you like oil floral still life painting. She is an excellent teacher.
Hedi is scheduled to teach in Georgia in November and read about it  at Quinlan Visual Arts Center.

I'm scheduled to teach a one day art journaling workshop August 31 and there is still time to sign up. Read more about it on my website .HERE

Matt, a Torn Paper Collage Portrait Painting by Texas Collage Artist, Nancy Standlee and a One Day Sketchbook Journaling Workshop.

 Matt  NFS
20x20 on gallery wrapped canvas
Torn Paper Collage

The photo was taken last Thanksgiving at my daughter's house and I glued the finishing touches on the torn paper collage today. I'll varnish later this afternoon.  Slow? Not exactly as I've used this torn paper collage in progress giving three collage demos/talks this year. There is no way anyone would sit through a whole demo of me gluing papers so I use it mostly to explain the process and glue a few pieces so I can demo the Liquitex gloss medium and varnish used in attaching the pieces.
Matt is currently enrolled in UTA and this will go in his room if he approves. For personal collages, I add computer text of names of family members and some other personal likes. I have to chuckle when I asked him some of his "likes" he said "Candy".. well, don't we all? Matt entertains us at family celebrations with his magic tricks so I copied a King of hearts and put in the names of his favorite band on the gallery edge.
This is a collage I'd done previously of his father and my son, Eric.

Another son, Brad, below,  and I tell this story in my demos about asking him some personal questions trying to find out some of his "likes" and I asked, what is your favorite color, your favorite food, and your favorite song..tell me some things like this and I was expecting a whole paragraph of things he liked. Brad texted back "red, hamburger, and "For the Good Times".. I worked with what I got. lol

This one is of my daughter Dana.
Torn Paper Collage is a messy business and I tell my classes "If you are a picky housekeeper this may not be for you." Right now my kitchen is consumed with tiny bits of torn paper and I'll be picking off medium from my fingers for days but try it, you might be surprised at the results and this might become your new favorite medium.

Remember I'm teaching a one day art journaling class at the Dutch Art Gallery, Dallas. See my website for more info under workshops and sign up at the link.

Recently I took a workshop in AR with Hedi Moran and this is one of my favorite florals I painted and it sold this week but it's staying in Texas.

Hedi Moran Floral Still Life Workshop, Day 3, Fayetteville, Arkansas, "August Roses", Floral Oil on Canvas Panel, Art Journaling One Day Workshop by Texas Artist Nancy Standlee

 August Roses 13061   SOLD
20x16 Oil on canvas panel

I was in Fayetteville, AR attending the Hedi Moran Oil Painting Still Life Workshop July 30-August 2, 2013 with the Artists of Northwest Arkansas. Hedi was there to give the workshop and judge their show at the Art Center of the Ozarks and it will be up until the end of the month. I painted the above on day 3 from Arkansas roses and this was either a snowball bush or a hydrangea bush as I got my white flowers confused. We took a break to eat at a wonderful bakery and deli, Briar Rose in Farmington. And we enjoyed it so much we showed up again the next day, Friday and I do wish I had a take out right now.
 The Class at Briar Rose

A magical bakery called Briar Rose had to have a special smaller door for our instructor Hedi Moran. I see that she got something to go. Hmmm..
Hedi has a Facebook account HERE and if you'd like to see more of her paintings go HERE to the New Masters Gallery.

Hedi has a sunflower painting on page 5 (sunflowers with a cobalt blue vase) and on page 16 roses in the book The Best of Flower Painting by Northlight, 1997. I always like to know who the instructor has taken from and Hedi took from Joyce Pike and she has a painting in the book also. I found Hedi by taking workshops from Dreama Tolle Perry and Nancy Medina. Both of them had taken workshops with Hedi and maybe more than one and I know I must take another one. See my blog post HERE to see dates and times of Hedi's next workshop.

Art Journal Workshop August 31, 2013 at the Dutch Art Gallery, Dallas, TX
I will be giving a one day "Love Your Life" art journaling workshop and it's a beginner's introduction to materials, journals, travel palettes and how to get that first entry down for your daily journal entry. It will be fun and you don't have to draw so don't let that deter you. Read more about it and Sign up HERE.

Oil Floral Still Life 16x2 on 3/4" gallery wrapped canvas

The sunflowers were painted on day two of the Hedi Moran Oil Painting Still Life Workshop in Fayetteville, AR last week. I haven't even unpacked everything and have already signed up for a 5 day in Georgia with Hedi in November. Because I think she is such a good instructor and painter I want to list some of her upcoming workshops that still have openings so you can join her if she's in your area.

And in Scottsdale, AZ May 5-9 for a 5 day at the Scottsdale Art School
contact aparish@scottsdaleartschool.org

A good selection of her paintings can be found at this gallery: http://newmastersgallery.com/artists/painters/hedi-moran/

If you can't get to her workshops she has 3 DVD's at this site Liliedahl Video Productions.

Hedi painted four demos on 16x20 gallery wrapped canvases, 3/4" depth and she sold them to class members but if she travels with wet paintings, she stacks them, putting a clean one on top, and maybe taping them so they won't shift, puts them into her suitcase and will fly with wet paintings stacked. She does use Liquin before putting on the foundation transparent colors.  Interesting. I'm going to try this. Since I drove I used a redneck box setup that looked pathetic but it got them home. I have several wet panel carriers but not in this larger 16x20 size. We arrived for the workshop with our canvases gessoed a neutral gray.
And now for the best tip of all, where you can get her Hedi brush and you will love the price. She loves painting with it and I arrived with several but she does magic with this brush she gets from Arizona Art Supply. But I watched as she traveled around to each student and would use their brushes and seems she has command of most brands!!

Call them IF you don't want 30.
Red Roses will be the next post

Hedi Moran Workshop, Fayetteville, AR., Day 1, Still Life Oil and Florals, Rose Painting by Texas Daily Painter Nancy Standlee, Arlington, TX

Arkansas Roses 13059
Oil Floral, 16x20 on gallery wrapped, 3/4" depth canvas

Hedi Moran starting on time and ready, set, and away we go.

Hedi's traveling palette, a Michaels' picture frame with a glass about 12" sq. and she cleans with a razor blade scraper.

Nancy and Hedi

I have had the best four day, floral still life workshop with Hedi Moran in Fayetteville, AR. at the motel where I stayed. Everything was perfect, nice cool weather, a great motel at the Guest House International with free breakfast and free wifi and a painting instructor who made sure her students succeeded. I had to laugh the first morning on Tuesday July 30  because she had us to arrive 15 minutes early and she took charge at 9 and began her demo. There was no hello how are you, no waiting for latecomers to arrive, no introductions and away we went taking notes and photos and we could not keep up with her. Some instructors wait 30 minutes for the last student to arrive then waste another 30 with introductions but not Hedi. Brenda Laney, workshop chairman of the Artists of Northwest Arkansas, barely got a chance to tell us where the bathroom was before that first brush stroke and by Thursday we did take the time to say where we were from..lol..loved it.
Hedi is one of the best teachers I've ever had. She's a fast painter and worked on 16x20's for her demos and would finish them in about an hour and a half, talking and explaining her technique and colors all the while, and also would include some other techniques she wanted to share. We usually had an early lunch to beat the crowd then we had all afternoon (till 4:00) to paint one of the 4 setups around a very large room for the 7 students. I always wanted to paint which ever set up Hedi painted and Hedi would walk the room the rest of the time, going in order to each student and would advise, answer questions or if you'd like she would paint some on your painting and I always needed help. In reality the paintings I will show the next 4 posts will be a collaborative effort between us. I am surprised and very pleased with all my workshop paintings and now as I review them I'm wondering can I do this again?
Hedi is from Norway and she came to the US when she was 9 and you pronounce her name like "Hedi Lamarr" and not like Heidi of the Swiss Alps but I would get mixed up. She had just returned from a Norway visit and teaching 4 workshops there but don't plan to take one next year because she teaches these in Norwegian and you might be a little confused. Take one of the several she has on her schedule in the US and I'll post some of the locations later in the next post or so.
If you ever had a desire to paint florals in oil I would recommend you take from Hedi. She was helping me on Friday at 4:00, quitting time when other instructors would have been packed up and ready to head out the door. Hedi doesn't have a website but has a Facebook page and she's from Scottsdale AZ and teaches at the Scottsdale Artists School HERE. I know there is another Hedi workshop in my future. For now you might like to hear an interview with her by Leslie Saeta on Blog Talk Radio HERE.
How did I find Hedi? I've taken 2 workshops with Dreama Tolle Perry and Nancy Medina and found out they had both taken workshops from her and praised her teaching ability and work. I agree with their recommendation.

Sold yesterday and painted in the Kentucky Dreama Tolle Perry workshop:
