Polka Dot Roses 2, Acrylic Textured Drip Floral Painting by Nancy Standlee Texas Contemporary Artist

Polka Dot Roses 1
12 x 12 x 2" acrylic painting on Ampersand Gessoboard with Cradle

I experimented with acrylic drip florals on Venetian Plaster grounds in the Carolyn Riegelman workshop last week in Granbury. See previous post for more information.
See my online gallery HERE at Daily Paintworks.

Carolyn with one of her paintings. She works much larger than my little puny 12x12 above.
Four Granbury friends, Pam Fritz, Jackie Stengle, Diana Littlejohn and Lynda Robinson are having a special show, Creative Innovations,  at the Langdon Center Art Gallery until May 23, 2012 in Granbury, TX.

Pam with one of her florals in the show.

Pyrrole Red:
For the non artists, this is a color of a red paint and Carolyn loves it but no one in the class knew how to pronounce it....well, smart me I said I know how to spell it but not say it but I left out one R and added two L's.. and made a feeble attempt to educate the class with the Texas sound of "pie-rollie". Then Sharon, next to me in class, and I got to saying it with an Italian bent like Pie-roll-lay which sounded like something you might put on top of a plate of spaghetti. Now I couldn't stand not knowing and after coming home I've found out the correct pronunciation and can't wait to start dropping that name into all my art conversations. Click on that little speaker HERE and you can hear the correct way to say it but I still like my pie-rollie and I may have said it so long there will be no turning back. If Carolyn painted it, it probably has a little pyrrole red in there somewhere.

Polka-dot Roses Painting, Acrylic Abstract Floral Drip by Texas Artist Nancy Standlee

"Polka-dot Roses" 12061
36"x12"x2" acrylic mixed media on Ampersand Gessobord

I've been with about 20 other happy artists for a 4 day workshop in Granbury, TX at the LGAA with instructor artist, Carolyn Riegelman from Denton. The above painting is one of my favorites from several I finished at the workshop (some were starts from a previous workshop). My photography does not do this one justice as there is a lot of depth with the many layers of drips, splashes and graphic lines. The workshop title was "Acrylic/Texture Abstract" and we used some venetian plaster for our texture. I will post more photos and paintings from the workshop in the coming posts.

The Shanley House Gallery is hosting the Design on Wine, Wine Walk Show for the month with some great wine art paintings. I have two pieces in the show, one in the gift shop and one palette knife sold at the Thursday night auction. All this is in conjunction with the 3rd annual Granbury Wine Walk.

An upcoming workshop with Carol Nelson is filling up fast so contact Diana Littlejohn at the LGAA site if you are interested in attending.

There is an ongoing collage show of some of my torn paper and painted paper paintings are at the FWCAC  click HERE for more information.

I have about 40 pieces in the Old Post Office Museum and Art Center show along with the group I paint collaboratively with, Canvas by Canvas. Call for opening times.

Design on Wine ~ Acrylic Wine Painting ~ Granbury LGAA Show ~ Granbury Wine Walk by Texas Contemporary Artist Nancy Standlee

"Wine Bottles, Yellow Rose" 12057
20x16x1 1/2" depth acrylic on gallery wrapped canvas
Acrylic wine bottle, wine glass and yellow rose painting

This is the largest of the 3 paintings I delivered to the LGAA members show today, 2012 Design on Wine themed show for the Lake Granbury Art Association and it will be open April 27 to May 20 at the Shanley House Gallery in conjunction with the third annual 2012 Granbury Wine Walk April 27 and 28.
Two of the paintings will be in the show and one small 10 x 8 will be in the gift shop at the Shanley House.

In the above painting, I photographed my set up and took it to the Robert Burridge workshop this week in Arlington, TX. and worked on it there and finished it up at home. Usually Bob says, no photos needed as we will make it up but I love my realistic painting of a wine bottle of his in my personal collection and wanted to try one under his direction. He was very complimentary of the above painting. Thanks again Bob for a great inspiring workshop.

Do you like lots of color and texture in your paintings? Then check out Carolyn Riegelman's paintings on her website HERE. She will be giving a 4 day workshop in Granbury next week, April 24-27. Paint and then go to the Wine Walk. This sounds like a great idea but after painting for 4 days I would need a limo for the wine drive instead of a walk. Maybe we can work out something?

Robert Burridge Workshop, Arlington, TX ~ Carol's Valentine Roses Acrylic Still Life Painting ~ by Texas Contemporary Painter Nancy Standlee

"Carol's Valentine Roses" SOLD

12x12 acrylic still life on gallery wrapped canvas

I know my last 2 posts were about an oil painting workshop at my friend Dena's ranch but when my favorite painting duo California couple is in town I just have to go. Robert and Kate Burridge are in Arlington at the Upstairs Gallery giving two 3 day sessions in aqua media (watercolor and acrylic) and I've attended the first three days, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Bob and his pears

I've painted some pears along with Bob but the above painting is a commission for a friend from my Tarleton State College (University) days in Stephenville, TX. Carol's Valentine Roses.. A hint to the other Purple Poo readers from the 50's. You will know this family as he was our cheerleader and Carol is his beautiful wife.

This was my 12th Robert Burridge workshop. I've been hooked since I saw his coffee cups on the cover of a Cheap Joe's catalog years ago. I took my first workshop with him in 2006 at Dena's ranch and I've learned something in every one of them, met some great friends, and practiced painting. To see a new video of him in a Tucson abstract acrylic and collage workshop click HERE.

On his website there are two new DVD's that came out in November that I've added to my collection, Abstract Painting and Collage and Painting Abstract Landscapes and Trees. If you can't get to a workshop, studying along with Bob in one of his DVD's is the next best thing.

As an added bonus in the workshop, 4 other Canvas by Canvas members were in the first session, Maryann Stephens, Barbara Hackney, Elizabeth "Betty" Taylor, and Margie Whittington. There wasn't much visiting going during our painting time but we enjoyed great lunches and made last minute plans for our big Sunday reception. Our show "A Few of Our Favorite Things" features new works by Canvas by Canvas and selections from our individual work. I have about 40 personal pieces in the show.
Canvas by Canvas Reception, Sunday, April 22, 2-4, Graham, TX. Click HERE for more info.

There is a big Main Street Art Show this weekend in Fort Worth that I need to go to and check it out HERE.

My torn paper and painted paper collages are in a show at the Fort Worth Community Arts Center Cafe until June 29, 2012. Click HERE for directions and more info.

Qiang Huang Workshop, Day 2 ~ Franken Frames ~ Daily Painters Frames - Nancy Standlee Texas Daily Painter

Wine Glass and Grapes Still Life Oil Painting 12055
11 x 14 oil on Gessobord

The above oil still life painting was finished on the second day of the Qiang Huang workshop at Dena Wenmohs Ranch. To read more about the workshop see my previous post. On the third day, Qiang talked to us about art marketing and photographing your work. The above painting needs some of his photo tips for sure and will take another shot at a later date. He likes GIMP.

Daily painters can find plein air type floater frames and edge to edge frames in custom sizes at the Franken Frames division, Daily Painters Frames website. Roger is offering a package deal. I paint with a collaborative art group, Canvas by Canvas, and we have used Franken Frames for several years to supply our large frames and we have been extremely pleased with the service. Now he is offering smaller custom frames specifically for Daily Painters with free shipping. Email info@dailypaintersframes.com or call 1 800-322-5899. I know my daily painters friends at Daily Paintworks will want to see what he has to offer and I will place an order for that hard to find 7x9 painting soon.

Remember to save the date for the Canvas by Canvas reception Sunday, April 22, in Graham. See my post HERE for more info.

Qiang Huang Oil Painting Workshop, Day 1 ~ Dena Wenmohs Ranch by Texas Daily Painter Nancy Standlee

 Pear and Grape Still Life
 8 x 10 oil on Ampersand board
Painted at the Qiang Huang's workshop at the Dena Wenmohs Ranch (April 13-15, 2012)
(For painting purchase see link at the end of the post for the Daily Paintworks Gallery)

My first day high key painting from the Qiang Huang workshop. I've been in the Texas Hill Country for several days and yes, there are some bluebonnets still blooming. Qiang Huang has conducted a studio still life painting workshop at the Dena Wenmohs Ranch, April 12-April 15, 2012. There have been 10 happy painters watching demos and listening to lectures in the morning and then trying to apply the concepts in the p.m. after a wonderful Dena lunch back at the main house. Dena gave us some Ampersand panels so I chose this one for the first high key painting.
The Class:
For the first two days, Qiang lectured during a slide show, then his demo in the a.m. and the students would paint in the p.m. at 6 stations set up in the large barn. Two students would work at one station and before beginning painting, Qiang would give suggestions on set up and composition. On the third morning, we painted and then he gave a slide show/lecture in the p.m. on art marketing. The first day of the workshop, Qiang's emphasis was on composition and lighting and how to set up a still life.
This is a great getaway for workshops so check Dena's website for the dates for the next one with Vie Dunn-Harr.
Dena and I have spent some time in the evenings learning more about Pinterest and Leslie Saeta had a blog talk radio program last week on why artists should be on Pinterest. Listen to her program anytime HERE.

Qiang Huang's demo high key painting 9x12 oil, SOLD, during the workshop. He is an excellent instructor and a gentle soul with encouraging words to me like "your color is good but you need to be more sensitive to your drawing" instead of saying .... "your drawing, proportion, and measurement sucks!"
No, he would never say that but Dena would!! I showed her how to use Pinterest on the condition that she make a board of "Favorite Artists" and put in on it first and I'm now on that board in Qiang's company...woo hoo..

Dena, Qiang, and Nancy (the wind is blowing bad and my middle is not quite that big yet..it's big but I could be "with child" in that photo) One of the camp mascots. Roscoe, is whiffing in the background.

Qiang's palette setup with the Art Box and Panel James Coulter system.
I love taking photos of instructors palette and how they set it up. I tried to refrain myself from asking what size brush is that??? and instead would run up and look after the demo. I'm probably best known to art instructors as the lady who sits in the front row and interrupts with "what color is that" or "what size brush is that"...

Some of you may already know that I started some oil painting workshops in January with Peggi Kroll Roberts in CA. and then in March was in Tucson to study with her again. Before the workshops I purchased some of her DVD's to study and now this week I see she has 6 new ones out HERE and you can watch a very short YouTube clip about individual DVD's when you click "more information click here" under each DVD. I enjoyed the study of concentrating on a specific problem and painting along with her in these approximately 45 minute sessions. Additional segments on each DVD include her supply list and more of her paintings.

This is one of my favorites I painted from one of Peggi's DVD's from the first lessons and yes, I've placed my order for set three.

Apple Daily Paintworks Challenge Painting byTexas Contemporary Artist Nancy Standlee

"I'm Off to the Gala. Don't Wait Up"
8"x 8" oil painting on gesso board ready to frame

I have an online gallery at Daily Paintworks, click HERE, and each week some artist will issue a challenge to paint a subject and anyone can contribute a painting. See the current challenges HERE. Recently, Carol Marine issued a "pare your apple challenge", draw off the apple and divide it into areas of color before painting. This is my entry and in my setup I used one of the handmade batik napkins I made in the 80's? Anyway it was a long time ago and they are hiding in a drawer because I rarely use a cloth napkin anymore. During the many dips in a dye bath I'd add a square of white muslin to help keep a record of the colors used. I ended up with a lovely assortment of napkins. Now the colorful squares are oils painted on a gesso board panel and today I'm framing it for the Graham show.

I found out that my Green Apples won Best of Show for the CFAI March challenge. Click HERE to see the painting. It is in a private collection. And good news non-members can contribute their paintings in this monthly challenge. The April challenge is "All Things".

Shows:
My hand painted paper and torn paper collages have been delivered to the FWCAC in Fort Worth, TX., for a show that runs from April 6 to to June 29, 2012. There will be 14 pieces in the show in the Cafe. Click HERE for more details.

I paint with a group of 8 collaborative artists, Canvas by Canvas, and we are preparing for a show "A Few of our Favorite Things", at the Old Post Office Museum in Graham TX in April and May. Each of the artists are also showing some of their personal work along with some new collaborative pieces. A reception will be held Sunday, April 22, 2012 at 2:00 PM and everyone is invited. The exhibit runs from April 16-May 18, 2012. The Old Post Office Museum and Art Center is at 500 3rd St, Graham, TX 76450, telephone 940 549-1470 and website http://www.opomac.net.

You are invited to view the art at these locations, join a challenge or comment on the blog post. Have a great April and I appreciate the ones who subscribe to and read this blog.
