Ventura Fruit Stand, Palette Knife Painting and Liz Steel Sketching Now Class by Texas Artist Nancy Standlee

Ventura Fruit Stand
Oil, 12x12: on Ampersand gessobord panel

The palette knife workshop with Leslie Saeta at her beach house in November in Ventura CA was a combo of plein air and studio. This particular painting was done in the studio on the last day of the workshop. She has just posted her 2015 list of workshop dates. If you are wanting to learn the palette knife she is an excellent instructor.
In preparation for more traveling and lighter loads, I've just ordered the mini palette (2 lbs.) from James Coulter. I have the compact and standard but I keep wanting smaller and lighter. He has some good videos on how to set up.
While in California, the Liz Steel Sketching Now online classes started and I'm just now catching up. She lives in Australia and it's the best way I know of for this Texas gal to get to study with her along with hundreds of other students around the globe. Here is part B of my homework for this week on volumes. I used the Stillman and Birn, Zeta book, 7x10".

Boat Oil Palette Knife Painting, Ventura Marina and More Sketching Toys by Texas Artist Nancy Standlee

Ventura Marina 14079
Oil, 12x12 on Ampersand gessobord panel, unframed

On the last blog post I wrote about two California workshops and this palette knife painting was done in Ventura in the Leslie Saeta workshop. I had an interesting post about palm trees and turkey talk and Thanksgiving came and went and you probably didn't have time to read it anyway. Well, maybe just one item from my notes.

One of my jobs at Thanksgiving is to bring LOTS of dressing, chocolate and pecan pies and chopped up fresh fruit salad to whichever child is hosting our get together (my house has outgrown our gathering by too many art supplies) and this time I threw in an apple pie for good measure, but this story will be about the dressing. As a young mother of a 4 year old and we moved to California to face Thanksgiving for the first time without my mother's or mother-in-law's meal so I made a deal with another young Texas mother who had never had to cook a Thanksgiving meal. If our husbands would agree to watch the children we'd attempt to cook them a traditional meal. I came armed with a Lone Star Gas November 1960 Turkey Talk paper and I do think that's what we used for the dressing along with some phone calls back to Texas. Anyway I'm still using that cornbread dressing recipe and it's tearing at the folds and has a few food splatters and blurred notations and the recipe has to be doubled now but it has become a requested dish each November. I stew a few chicken breasts and chop and drop those pieces in before baking just as my Mom did. I hope you got to spend some time with family and enjoyed a favorite dish or started a new tradition. We will meet at Christmas but the evening meal will be snacks like Virginia Ham Biscuits..yum.

I am forever on the quest to find a good messenger bag for outdoor sketching and I found this online from Target, made by Diaper Dude..Yep, it's a diaper bag but I think those pockets for wipes and bottles might make a great place for pens and pencils. I'm loading it up but I haven't taken it on a trial run yet but I love the camo and bright orange zippers.

Two California Workshops, Leslie Saeta, Palette Knive in Ventura, VW Beetle Oil Painting and Urban Sketchers in Dallas by Texas Artist Nancy Standlee

VW Beetle 14080
12x12" Oil
Ampersand Panel

I returned Friday night, November 14 from a great two weeks art workshops in California and I guess I will work backwards in the posts. One of the workshop ladies spotted this VW on Leslie Saeta's street near the Ventura beach and all the class walked down and met the owner and took lots of photos and figured this cute bug must be painted. I felt like the traveling van symbolized my experiences as I flew from DFW to Phoenix to change planes, Monterrey, CA took a rental to Carmel, CA where I took 5 days with Patti Mollica, in acrylic and flew from Monterrey to Santa Barbara by way of LAX, got a shuttle to Ventura and from Ventura another shuttle to LAX and back to DFW. We painted 5 days in "Paradise Pallete Knife Paintings by the Beach" and left shirt sleeve weather to arrive to freezing cold in DFW area.

Here is a photo of the class on the beach:
Lucy, Tina, Debbie, Leslie, Karla, and NS

I headed to Dallas and the Bishop Arts District on Saturday, Nov. 15 to join the Urban Sketchers of Texas for outdoor sketching in the afternoon. Over the next few weeks, I'll share some of the tips and info I've discovered by way of my journeys.

Pizza at Enzo's before painting - so many layers!

This is a great chair for sketching, the Xpress Lounger from REI and it comes in XL and regular http://www.rei.com/product/783457
/gci-outdoor-xpress-lounger-chair and you can see me trying it out along with some fingerless mittens purchased on the way to the venue. This chair is super easy to carry, put up and take down.

This is my sketch in the Moleskine A4 journal. Need to work on my architectural skills. I hope to do that in the next 12 weeks as I'm taking another online class with Liz Steel and it is excellent. http://www.lizsteel.com/2014/10/sketching-foundations-course.html
She lives in Australia, is an architect and in 7 years has filled 100 sketchbooks. Oh, yes, I'm sure to pick up a few tidbits along the way.

More paintings in Watercolor and a Recent Richard Stephens Watercolor Workshop by Texas Artist Nancy Standlee

Showcase Flowers 14058
15x9" on 140 cp paper
no frame, or mat

I spent 3 days last week, October 1-3, 2014, in Dallas taking a Richard Stephens watercolor workshop at the Artist Showplace, called "Lighten Up, Loosen Up". The above painting was painted after watching Richard paint his demo flowers on day 2. I became aware of his work when I was at the Kanuga workshop in the spring. Our first day was a barn demo but mine will be a painting that I will eventually paint something on the back and leave my barn painting to another day. This painting will be mailed without a mat or frame or glass.

Dallas Flowers 14059
8x6" watercolor on Rtistx board

Rtistx.com is an archival board, 6x8” manufactured in the United States and Texas, light weight, and can be presented without mat or glass. I am applying a coat of Renaissance wax for protection and this small, lightweight can be placed on a tabletop easel for display. I ordered my wax from Amazon but the link below tells more about it.

Two items that I will have to purchase now after the workshop:

Cheap Joe's dagger liner brushes
and the workbook from Betty Edwards: Drawing on the Right side of the Brain Workbook available on Amazon.
