Small Oil Paintings from the Peggi Kroll Roberts DVD and DPW ArtByte Tutorials by Texas Contemporary Artist Nancy Standlee

Oil Study from the Peggi Kroll DVD: Limited Palette 12032
8x6 on canvas panel

Oil Study from the Peggi Kroll DVD High Key Value 12031
8x8 on gallery wrapped 3/4 depth canvas

The above two paintings are #7 and #8 from the Peggi Kroll Roberts DVD oil studies. These are short one lesson DVD's that are fun to watch and paint along with Peggi.
David and Carol Marine are behind the gallery where I show my online art HERE. This morning Carol was  interviewed by Leslie Saeta on Artists Helping Artists.
Carol and David have a great new addition to the Daily Paintworks site in the ArtByte Tutorials. Some are free and some cost a small fee and like Peggi's, are short and will cover one subject. I know what I'm doing tonight (taking my laptop to my recliner and checking these out.) I think it's a great idea especially for others that can't get into Carol's workshops for whatever reason. Another great place to learn more about art and a wonderful place to share our art. At present there are about 600 artists posting on Daily Paintworks and generating 9000 unique visitors a day.

Daily Paintworks Challenge ~ Paint It Before You Eat It ~ Small Oil Painting by Texas Contemporary Artist Nancy Standlee

The Daily Paintworks Challenge
Paint It Before You Eat It
Oil 6 x 8 on canvas panel

I have an online gallery at Daily Paintworks and someone is always offering a challenge to paint. This challenge was presented by Carol Marine before Valentine's Day and you could paint from her photo or provide something of your own. I decided to paint from her photo and the only downside I didn't get to eat the goodies after I finished painting it this afternoon and gosh, darn, those little pleated papers were hard to paint. Many of the posted challenges were so much better than mine but that's the fun to see the other painters interpretation and I probably would have never chosen anything with a little frilly paper to start with. Want to give your art journey a stretch? Come try a challenge with us and you don't have to be a member to join in a challenge and there are no deadlines...so now, will you submit to the challenge? Just play fair and paint it after the challenge has been given. Happy Painting.

Two More Small Oil Studies from the Peggi Kroll Roberts DVD's by Texas Contemporary Artist Nancy Standlee

Oil Study Still Life 12029
From the Peggi Kroll Roberts DVD: Edges and Palette Knife
10 x 8 on birch wood panel

Oil Study Figurative 12030
From the Peggi Kroll Roberts DVD: Figures in Sunlight
8" square MDF board

I'm still chuckling at myself this morning. Do we not give a quick look at our phone messages first thing of a morning? I saw I had a FB notification from Peggi Kroll Roberts with the title "Put These Offenders Away!!" My first and only thought is that she is offended by my oil studies taken from her DVD's. I ordered both sets and have been enjoying painting along with these 30-45 minute DVD's. If she doesn't want someone to paint from them why offer them for sale? Oh the questions running through my mind. This does not sound like the kind spirited and sharing person I met at the Lodi workshop. Maybe someone hacked her account? Later when I got to my computer and went to my Facebook page I see this is an invitation to join her cause: Justice for a special dog and the cry to put the offenders away who did the injury to the animal...Whew! She was not referring to my little oil studies at all.

The palette knife painting above could be my favorite and I'm trying to decide why -- A still life, because it nearly painted itself, good contrast, has some red in it, or is it the palette knife work. I will try another still life with my own set up soon. I've been haunting the thrift shops looking for some items I've probably discarded earlier. I think back to a blue metal coffee pot from Solvang, CA I discarded several years ago..waaah.. doesn't this always happen? Throw  it away/donate it and then want it back. It happened when I finally got rid of years and years of dress pattern collecting and then needed them for collage. I was totally blown away at the quantity and quality of the still life items Peggi set up for our first day of studio painting at the recent workshop.

The Figures in Sunlight Lesson is one of Peggi's favorite way of working, figures in bright outdoor light and that is the subject for the upcoming Tucson workshop at the Tucson Art Academy.

Small Figurative Oil Painting Study from Peggi Kroll Roberts DVD by Texas Contemporary Painter Nancy Standlee

DVD Lesson: From Value to Color 12027
Peggi Kroll Roberts DVD
Oil Study 8x10 on gessoed birch panel

DVD Study: Painting from Photos
Peggi Kroll Roberts DVD
Oil Study 8x6 on canvas panel, gessoed and toned

In the last blog post I told about taking twelve Peggi Kroll DVD's to the Lake House to study and paint from and I completed nine oil studies and was having so much fun and had plans to return home and finish up the other 3. Today I ran to the grocery store and it was the first day my car wheels have turned or my lips have seen lipstick,  since I returned home over 7 days ago and I am desperately trying to rejoin humanity. One peep went to the Lake House recovering from a San Diego virus and do you know what? It felled the rest of us like good little peep marching soldiers. The ones that were sick there were no trouble just wanting to be left alone to sleep so I got a lot of painting done; however, once home and personally felled I've nearly been immobile. In fact I asked my neighbor to get my mail, leave it under a brick on the front porch, ring the doorbell and run and then when he was safely back in his house, then I'd open the door and get the mail trying to not contaminate the neighborhood.  But today I'm actually thinking about painting again after gathering in more soup and fruit.

I post my work on Daily Paintworks, the creation of Carol and David Marine. They gave a very interesting interview on blog talk radio with the program Artists Helping Artists.
If you have an iPhone or smart phone you can download these programs and listen at your leisure or listen on the computer. There is a lot of good information for artists discussed. Dreama Tolle Perry and Leslie Saeta host this weekly show and they are workshop instructors and daily painters. Listen sometime or listen to back programs, I think you will enjoy the visit.

I've heard from Peggi Kroll Roberts and she has new DVD's that are being edited at this moment and will be available soon. I plan to be well and ready to order these as soon as I hear.

Stay well, my friends.

Butter: Lesson: Surface Quality DVD 12026

The peeps set up on one side of the room
Nancy's set up on the other side

I posted HERE in January about my first ever oil painting workshop in Lodi CA with Peggi Kroll Roberts. I ordered her 2 sets of DVD's before I went and watched and studied them but I didn't paint along with them. Well, I got to do that on this long Canvas by Canvas weekend (Thursday to Sunday) at the rented lake house in Gun Barrel City/ Paynes Springs about a 2 hours drive from our homes. I painted the seated figure on Thursday afternoon and came home with 9 studies from the DVD's. You can read more about the DVD's available on Peggi's site HERE
To see a YouTube Video preview for Simplified Shadow Mass click HERE.
To see a YouTube Video preview for Surface Quality click HERE

I stayed on one side of the roon with my laptop and earphones and painted oils on different supports from the DVD's and I will post two at a time until all are posted and will complete the other 3 during the week. The DVD's are short (30-45 minutes) and concentrate on one concept at a time giving you many different tools to use in your painting tool box. For instance, the Surface Quality, was all about painting thin darks and thick lights.

The Rest of the Story 12023, Seated Figure, Oil Painting, 8x8, DPW painting challenge, by Texas Contemporary Artist, Nancy Standlee

The Rest of the Story
Oil Figurative Painting Challenge
8x8 gessoed hardboard with a 3/4" cradled natural edge

I have my recent works at the online gallery at Daily Paintworks and each week the group has a painting challenge. I have never entered before until the above oil painting of the seated figure. I've also added the widget to my blog. Go HERE to read about the challenge and you don't have to be a member of DPW to enter. It's fun to see others interpretation of the photo or you can choose a personal photo. This is an oil painting and if you follow my blog you know I've just returned from my very first oil workshop in Lodi CA with Peggi Kroll Roberts. I learned a lot but now my interest is piqued and I've registered for the March workshop in Tucson. Check Peggi's list of workshops HERE.
If you can't get to a workshop she has 2 great sets of instructional DVD's on her website.
The three day Tucson workshop (Costumed Model Studio and Plein Air),  will be held at the Tucson Art Academy.

Signing your paintings in oil:
I'm having a cram course in all things oil and asking lots of questions, reading and researching. The signature is one of the questions and there are lots of others. I sure can't use my faithful Sharpie Paint pen to sign with as in my acrylics. I'm working on small panels and have a long name and before I get it all written something has gone wrong and it's not in proportion so I've decided to go with initials on the front with full information put on the back of the panel. I went to the Richard Diebenkorn Ocean Park exhibit at the Modern in Fort Worth recently and these were very large paintings and he used his initials so I'm following his example. I welcome your comments on your feelings about your signature.
