Pocket Sketching with Kath Macaulay in Tucson by Texas Daily Painter Nancy Standlee

Tucson Sketch
Day 1, Strathmore Drawing 4 x 6 in.

Kath Macaulay and Nancy
She uses one fanny pack but I felt like I needed two.

KATH Macaulay and Pocket Sketching:

Here are a few sketches (below in the slide show) I made this weekend in Tucson with 6 other students in Kath Macaulay's studio in her Pocket Sketching workshop. It had been in the back of my mind for several years to take her workshop and by chance on Wednesday I found out she was conducting a 3 day workshop in her studio Saturday, Sunday and Monday. I know I've never gotten ready so fast for a workshop and one of the reasons is her supply list. Check out her supply list HERE. It's always an adventure flying into a city never visited and a new workshop.

GREEN:

About 8:00 on Friday night I began to feel a little chill at the hotel and decided I needed help working the heat control because it seemed all my efforts just resulted in more cold air and after calling the front office, I found out this is a green hotel and they had switched over to air conditioning. It is either a/c or heat once you switch in a green hotel so being resourceful I made a blanket sandwich of the "Mister" side of the bed, reconsidered some softer sweaters to double duty as an p.j. under layer and made sure that the shower was good and hot the next morning. (If sometime I hear you say, it looks like you slept in your clothes, well you could be right.) During the days of the workshop the weather was perfect, sunny, no wind and shirt sleeve weather.

CARRY-ON and SPRAYLESS IN TUCSON:
I wanted to pack very light, wear jeans, tennis shoes, and take a few tops and do it all in a carry on bag and I haven't traveled this way in a long time because I usually have so many art supplies to take. My bag was searched by a close cropped haircut young man who probably never had to even use a comb and he confiscated my hairspray. He ordered me to the other side of the table and not to touch anything, began to lecture me on my packing and not having all my bottles in one plastic bag. I ducked under the table to tie my shoes and stayed under there as long as possible hoping he didn't throw out my makeup and mascara. He proceeded to tell me he didn't know how I got through with a carry on this tightly packed. (They didn't weight it or check it and I hurried on by is how) and the help of a muscular young man to hoist it in the overhead. So on Saturday morning on way to Kath's (with my beloved Sugar Foot (gps) I had to stop at Walgreens and buy new hairspray and spray out in the parking lot and now I'm wondering if everyone is buying these small trial sizes of hairspray to travel. (Interesting on the way home TUS let me keep said hairspray.)

DAY ONE:

Kath is an energetic, red headed, no nonsense oil and watercolor painter who has developed a fast sketching technique she calls pocket sketching, easy and quick to do and she had us working most of the day. We would move into an adjacent room for a short demo and critiques but our painting was done around a large table with timed exercises, usually 25 minutes by a timer. She explained how to use the pen with water and some basic watercolor washes. Later we chose some landscape photos to work from. She has designed a fanny pack to carry her supplies so you can be out the door, ready to sketch at a moments notice. This was what I was needing for more courage and inspiration to sketch in public and to organize my supplies. I usually end up with a pencil case filled with pens, several pan palettes and a journal or two, cumbersome and therefore, I don't do sketching as often as I'd like. I should. She has developed her process to a quick easy method and I think you'd enjoy reading her blog. I did. Check it out
HERE.

DAY TWO: It is exhilarating to wake up and know that after your coffee you can go sketch and learn something new..for a whole day. Sunday's challenges were still life with fresh flowers and then choosing a set up from something in her house. After a delightful lunch in her back yard we were treated to a fun sketch time. Kath dressed up in some outrageous "costumes" to pose for us to get us used to sketching quickly to get an image down. I had dinner at a great Mexican restaurant, El Charro Cafe and it was established in 1922 and it's the nation's oldest Mexican Restaurant in continuous operation by the same family. For their Carne Seca they sun dry beef on the roof.

DAY THREE:
The class met at
Trail Dust Town to spend the day to become more experienced sketching plein air. The first part of the morning Kath gave us a demo and then told us to scatter and pick us out a spot and she'd be back around checking on us (none of us were ready and wanted to follow her around but we finally did our own thing.) The weather was perfect and it was a delightful day. I flew home on Tues after a trip to the Sabino Canyon and a tram ride through some camera worthy scenery. There were a lot of suntanned, healthy looking older couples on the tram and hiking. Seems Tucson is a great place to spend the colder winter days.

Enjoy the slide show and mouse over for comments and if you get an opportunity take Kath's workshop and learn how to quickly record your surroundings. Check out her materials list to see the items in her fanny pack so she can be out the door in a moments notice.

Acrylic Floral Sold ~ Square Up Credit Card ~ by Texas Contemporary Artist Nancy Standlee

Orange and Violet Floral
SOLD

11 x 15 acrylic floral on watercolor paper

This acrylic floral is in the mail heading towards a Utah art collector. I will be relieved when I receive word that it meets with her approval. The internet is a great place to sell art as well as summer art shows.
Canvas by Canvas will be in a summer art show April 9 in McKinney, Art Walk in downtown on Main Street, for a one day show. Our group does about one outdoor show a year and we need all the suggestions anyone has on what we need for this outing. We have been given two tent spaces, one for CBC and one for individual artists from the group. I plan to bring some of my work and I hope I don't have to resort to pasteboard boxes for display. We'll see. A big plus is being with your friends and talking art to customers.

However, I will have the very newest in technology to take your payment.
This week I've received a free Square Up card reader for my iPhone letting me accept credit card payments anywhere. The Square device is attached into the audio jack for an android or iPhone and you're ready to slide a card and take payments after signing up and doing some paperwork at the San Francisco Company and your bank. (Jack Dorsey of Twitter is one of the founders in 2009.) I had to try it out and charged some fake $1.00 paintings to my account just to see if it would work. None of my friends wanted to play this game. You Tube has quite a few videos to watch to give you an idea of what to expect. My friend Suzy Pal from Plains, TX saw it on an early morning TV show and sent me the link. It is great to have friends to share information even if they won't let you practice buying/selling with their credit cards.

Torn Paper Collage Portrait by Texas Daily Painter Nancy Standlee

"Yes, Go!"
18 x 18 in. torn paper collage on stretched canvas

My west Texas friend, Suzy "Pal" and I met at the DFW airport and flew to Derek Gores two day collage workshop in February. It was a rush trip and we rushed working on our collages. I took 2 18 x 18 inch canvases, the largest that would fit in my suitcase. I completed "The Happy Rebel" and got the background started on "Yes, Go!" and finally had some time to work on it again Monday and finished it up today. I took the reference photo at the AMA Gala from across the room of a CBC member who was deep in thought during the auction. Maybe I should have named it "Karen says, Yes, Go!".
Remember if you'd like to take from Derek Gores, he will be at the Wenmohs Ranch June 1 and 2. Suzy and I will see you there where we will work on portrait collages.

Acrylic Floral ~ Ocher Flowers ~ Plum Vase ~ by Texas Daily Painter Nancy Standlee

"Ocher Flowers - Plum Vase"
For lack of a better title
12 x 9 in. on canvas panel

I was looking through some previous floral posts after a client inquired about a floral and I found this and liked it all over again; however, I see when I posted it before I misspelled Ocher.. so here it is if you want to see the original post and I took the photo over for a better image. See if you agree, HERE is the previous post, misspelled Ocher and all.
Do you ever have a client that inquires about a painting and you can't find it? Well, it's not my first time. One time it was a sale on PayPal and I had to refund the money when I couldn't produce the painting. Now that is pathetic. I will do better in 2011 after I find this Yellow Rose painting that is lost, lost!! I attribute it to old age because by the time you get my age you have so much information you have to keep straight and there is the necessity of always deleting some to make room for more.
And I owe an apology to FeedBlitz...wasn't their fault that blog link wasn't working.. I'd hit the wrong key when typing in the link - so much better to copy and paste links I suppose.

"Mr. Rooster" ~ Painted Paper Mixed Media Collage ~ Rooster for Dena's Gallery Show by Texas Contemporary Artist Nancy Standlee

"Mr. Rooster"  SOLD
Hand Painted Paper Mixed Media Collage
12" x 12" on gallery wrapped canvas

"Mr. Rooster" was mailed yesterday and is on his way to Dena Wenmohs Gallery Show at her ranch March 19 - 27. If you're in the Marble Falls and the Cypress Mill area of Texas check out these links for a map to her gallery show.

http://wenmohsranch.com/ or contact Dena at

dena@wenmohsranch.com

I am scheduled to give an art journaling workshop May 19 and 20 and let Dena know if you are interested; however, if you go to the show and like the rooster Dena said we could do a 2 day collage workshop instead of the art journal workshop. It will just depend on the interest. If we did a collage workshop I'd like to work on a cupcake similar to this one on day one, click HERE. A smaller rooster 8 x 8 in. was sold at the FWCAC show. Click HERE for the image.

If you're a Feedblitz subscriber a friend said their link was not working for my blog so if you want to go to my blog click HERE if you are a subscriber...until they get the link fixed. Thanks Saundra for the info.

"Come Fly with Me" ~ Acrylic and Collage ~ The Good Art Company ~ by Texas Daily Painter Nancy Standlee

"Come Fly with Me"
12 x 12" Acrylic and Collage on canvas
SOLD

Not every week can be workshops and play and this week it's income tax receipts and some gross household upkeep chores but then my thoughts have to turn to flying away and I thought of this happy piece of art that takes me back to a fun series. To see other art in this friend and lovers series check out my website HERE.

The Good Art Company
This will be a highlight of my week when I learned our Canvas by Canvas group is now in a Fredericksburg gallery that has moved into a new location with a new website and they are producing a brochure to place in area hotels, restaurants, and bed and breakfasts in the Fredericksburg area and we have been asked to provide 2 of our images. The CBC girls are planning a trip down the first weekend in April to paint on site or maybe more visiting than painting. See you there and think about flying away somewhere today if the income tax and water flow problems are in your day.

An art show at the Wenmohs Ranch: (near Marble Falls...)
Dena and her group is planning a big art show event March 19-27. Check out her blog or website or be her friend on Facebook.

Goofy Bird 2 ~ Robert Burridge Workshop ~ Dallas ~ Nancy Standlee Texas Daily Painter

"Goofy Bird 2"
7 1/2 x 11 in acrylic skins collage on watercolor paper

Check out my previous post HERE where I discussed the process for using these skins from your painting palette in the Robert Burridge Workshop in Dallas. This piece is highly textured and it just makes you want to have a messy palette to have more dried "skins". Bob is in Pensacola this morning for another 5 day workshop and I'm having my coffee and thinking about what a great painting experience those students are going to have. Bob is in Texas several times this year and his next Texas workshop will be in Granbury, Texas, April 11-15, 2011 and you know what? My friends will not be surprised but I'm already packed since I use big plastic tubs to haul my workshop "stuff" in and it's still on the couch ready to go from the Dallas trip. (Sometimes I won't let them come in just meet me in the front yard!) I use the back of my Rav 4 as a big art supply store with extra canvases and paper and maybe a Christmas fruitcake or two close by. I was telling some of the group in Dallas that we had some pretty bad weather in January and February and if and when I was ever stranded in an ice flow or snowdrift, I would be the most popular girl passing our fruitcake "food" to starving and cold fellow travelers (since my Christmas fruitcake is still in the passenger side floorboard.) In August, when Bob gets to Dena's Ranch, we may have to put this cake under refrigeration or soak it in a tasty beverage.

Goofy Bird ~ Acrylic Skins ~ Robert Burridge Workshop by Texas Artist Nancy Standlee

"Goofy Bird"
7 1/2 x 11 in on 140 watercolor paper using acrylic skins

I've been in Dallas for the Robert Burridge workshop and today we watched Bob paint his "Circus Birds" using the dried paint skins from his palette as a collage. He peels them off and attaches to his paper/canvas with acrylic gel. Naturally I had to try it and some of mine looked a little menacing so I chose one that looked more "normal". To see some of Bob's birds see his Artsy Fartsy Newsletter February 2008, and on how to make the skins see November 2010 and you can subscribe for his monthly Artsy Fartsy newsletter for free. On his home page there is a YouTube video posted about the circus birds acrylic "skins". He uses a 4 mil plastic for a palette so the dried acrylic peels off easily and try one of these birds and see if you don't laugh in the process. On this page there are a few more of the birds with his circus series.

This is Bob with one of his Circus Birds and this may give you a clue why I named my bird a "Goofy Bird". I'll come up with a more clever named bird later.
A more serious (can there be such a thing in one of his workshops?) theme is his works for the painting of the month club. Twelve paintings a year in a 6 x 9 in. format and matted. Contact Kate@RobertBurridge.com for information on how to join this exclusive club.

Citra Solv Collage Pear ~ Robert Burridge Workshop ~ Dallas ~ Nancy Standlee Texas Daily Painter

"Dallas Collage Pear"
9 x 12 Citra Solv collage pear on canvas

I posted yesterday about the Robert Burridge workshop in Dallas where Bob demonstrated making collage papers using Citra Solv and he did a collage demo of a pear using the papers made from a National Geographic magazine. I guess this pear should be named the "Burridge Collage Pear" because I was looking at his piece on the wall while working on this one. Torn pieces of the papers were adhered with liquid or gel medium, and the background was painted with acrylic and the collage was glazed with acrylic paint. There are other examples of Citra Art on the website at www.citrasolv.com. Be sure you use the concentrated version which does not have a sprayer and have fun. Click HERE for Bob's page on their site.

One of Bob's demos today of an abstract work and he does make it look super easy. If you'd like to take a Burridge workshop I hear there are openings at the Dena Wenmohs Ranch in August so contact Dena if you are interested.

After hours magic tricks by Bob and a student, Judith, who were our after dinner entertainment at Joe's Italian Villa. More information about this great 5 day workshop later.

Dallas Floral ~ Robert Burridge Workshop by Nancy Standlee Texas Contemporary Painter

"Dallas Floral"
9 x 12 in. Acrylic Floral on Canvas

Today in the Robert Burridge Workshop we made a "mess" with acrylic paints and a Viva paper towel on watercolor paper or canvas and then negative painted and "found" flowers or trees. Several have made comments on my blog or Facebook about wanting to take with Bob and my advice is get your reservation in a class as soon as possible. It will change your painting life. Before lunch we went out on the patio with a National Geographic magazine, Citra Solv liquid, some alcohol and sprinkled the pages and made some great collage pages. I glued some of them down later this afternoon for a pear and it will be posted later in the week. Citra Solv has an artists site that is fun to see what other artists have done with this cleaning product and the company provided the class with some free samples. Thanks Citra Solv. Click to see the examples HERE and HERE to see Robert Burridge's examples and an explanation of how he uses Citra Solv.

Robert Burridge Workshop ~ Dallas ~ Texas Daily Painter Nancy Standlee

"Admit" 12" x 12" Acrylic and Collage on canvas

This is my acrylic and collage painting done today at the Artists Showplace Gallery with California artist Robert Burridge teaching his Watermedia and Collage: Postmodern Painter Meets the Contemporary Collage Artist 5 day class.
Thanks, Cheap Joe, for donating each of us a 12" canvas to paint on and some exciting door prizes. Bob will be in Texas in Granbury and at Dena's ranch later this year if you want to take a workshop with him. Check HERE to see the contact person and time for future Texas workshops this year. Bob always has a waiting list because he makes his studio teaching a safe place to experiment and paint like you've always wanted to paint, take risks and have fun. There are 25 students in class who are painting with new compositions, concepts and color. If you can't get to a workshop Bob has a store on his site filled with DVD's and a Workbook & Studio Notes from the workshop and a great Artsy Fartsy newsletter filled with information. Check out his website.
