In progress

Ann DeRulle's collage in progress and she has decided she likes it hung this way on the diagonal and so do I. See her work here: http://annderulleart.com/

Blanche Hunt wanted to try a floral her way, finished it and purchased a frame from Pam at the Dutch Art. We liked her floral concept and her happy attitude.

Mary Truelove, a long time painting friend, member of SWS, and an experienced painter and her high heel collage in progress. See her work at

Nancy Medina, an experienced and very popular floral oil painter, and her bright red poppy collaged from one of her oils.

 Nancy and Nancy

We had a great time collaging with torn paper yesterday at the Dutch Art Gallery. I told the class you will never look at a magazine page the same way again and if you are a real picky housekeeper this technique might not be for you but I think these 4 got the process down. I'm so proud of their creations.

My high heel collage is a little different from my usual, bold in your face color schemes. I've been following Leslie Saeta's beach cottage decorating plan at http://www.venturabeachcottage.net/1/post/2013/07/finding-help-with-the-remodel.html  and liked the color scheme she's working with and decided to use this color scheme with my high heel and I found some water pieces to add to the shoe and I though some of the bubbles were appropriate. Last night at my daughter's birthday pool party it matched her bathing suit but the collage wasn't finished when she saw it last night. It still needs it's 2 coats of varnish.

Nancy Medina and I both think we need to go to Ventura and take one of these beach workshops. You just might be interested in following along with Leslie and her family in Italy as she will post some photos and you can paint from them and post them on her blog. How cool is that? Remember we journaled with Dreama in France and now we can go to Italy with Leslie Saeta. We just may need to get some new luggage soon. Mine is getting a little frayed around the edges.

Van Gogh's Iris at the Beach, Acrylic on 16x20 canvas panel by Texas Artist Nancy Standlee

Van Gogh's Iris Table at the Beach 13057
20x16 Acrylic on Canvas Panel

I painted this in an April, 2011 workshop and I've just now decided to release it and place it on DPW for sale. As it is a workshop painting, done in the Kathleen Elsey workshop, read more about it HERE on my blog post, it will be for a reduced price. I am now painting more in oils on Ampersand gessobords and I'm trying to make more studio room. The still life paintings I will release in the coming weeks were painted from still life set ups in the Santa Barbara four day workshop. Taking workshops can be an expensive proposition with flights, motels, supplies and instructor fees and food but it's the fastest way to study with an instructor you admire plus the benefit of a visit or a revisit to a location. I took this opportunity to revisit Lompoc,  a city nearby when I lived for a short time in the 60's.
Hint if you are taking a workshop this summer and have an iPad, bring it with you to photograph the setups and take it back to your easel to paint from. In some of the locations it may be hard to see the setups from your easel and it's an ideal way to work. Leslie Saeta, teaches this method and she has an informative weekly radio program that every artist could learn from by listening. Lesie has even added  iPad holders in her Carriage House studio for the convenience of her students. I also painted from my iPad in the Dreama Tolle Perry, Lexington workshop and using  Dreama's photos.

Please check my website for upcoming one day classes in torn paper collage and watercolor art journaling Here at http://nancystandlee.com.
Here is an image from one of my daily journals.. just jotting down some memories and my Lone Ranger page.

I paint with a group of artists, Canvas by Canvas.com and we sold a painting this week, Tin Cup Tunes shown below. The piano was in a restaurant/cafe (the Tin Cup) in Arlington where we frequently eat. I saw The Lone Ranger yesterday...(the connection and why am I writing this?) Damon Carney, the owner of the Tin Cup, plays Blaine in the Lone Ranger movie. I liked the movie and don't understand the negative press. I guess the reviewers aren't old enough to appreciate what the Lone Ranger meant to us growing up and hearing the radio programs. I still have a question about the movie. How in the world did they get William Fichtner's lip to make him look so menacing? And Johnny Depp as Tonto with a bird on his head..just too much.

French Umbrella Oil Painting, Dreama Tolle Perry, Lexington, KY Workshop and Two One Day Workshops, Journals and Torn Paper Collage by Texas Artist Nancy Standlee

French Umbrella Again
10x8 Oil on Ampersand Gessobord Panel
Available from my online gallery at Daily Paintworks HERE:

This is the last painting I have to post from the Dreama Tolle Perry workshop in Lexington KY in June. We worked on 12x12 in the workshop and I posted my French Umbrella oil painting HERE. Those umbrellas were not as easy as Dreama made them look so I decided to try again on the day set aside to work on a photo from home. I was fortunate enough to travel with 3 TX friends to this workshop, Maryann, Karen and Connie.
Today I looked at my Lexington journal I kept during the 5 day workshop and remembered two of the new friends when I entered their names in my journal and when they joined us for a meal. A lot of the entries were all about what and where we ate. I also had a laugh when I came to my page of Karen's Sayings. I had seen a page of Karen's journal where she wrote down some of Dreama's quotes and sayings. On Friday evening, Maryann and I went for a nice dinner, Karen and Connie stayed at the workshop and painted (and painted and painted trying to get it right) and after a few texts it got later and later. I asked them to bring us a surprise back to the hotel, to stop by and tell us goodnight and on and on..and what Karen told me is on my Karen's Sayings page and no, I can't put it in this post but I assure you it is nothing like her Dreama Quote page. Keep a journal on your next trip and make a "sayings" page of quotes from friends or of passing conversations. It makes great journal fodder.

One Day Workshops announced:
Torn Paper Collage - July 27  Dutch Art Gallery http://dutchartgallery.net/event/nancy-standlee-torn-paper-collage/

Sketchbook - Art Journal August 31 Dutch Art Gallery

And I found a great link on different pens for journaling on Cathy Johnson's blog HERE:

I learned a great search tip this morning about searching on a Facebook group. I belong to Artist's Journal Workshop https://www.facebook.com/groups/artists.journal.workshop/?fref=ts and I was just wishing you could search posts and one of the dear members says.. you can.. Click on the magnifying glass beside notifications and there is the search box.. How can you use this? For instance, you remember  someone wrote about a favorite Lamy pen but you don't remember when or where. Go to the magnifying box, click and type in Lamy pen. Thank you, Denita Tutwiler Wishart  for a great tip on GROUPS.

I love making up watercolor palettes and this one of Charles Reid's colors to use when painting from his book, Watercolor Solutions. The little Altoid box up in the corner is to hold my spicey colors that I just need..just in case. I've been going through the book and practicing some of the faces like these below, about 3 - 4 in. tall some in a sketchbook and some on separate paper.

Torn Paper Collage Commission and Art Journal Sketches and Collage Workshop News by Texas Artist Nancy Standlee

Collage Commission
3 panels gallery wrapped canvas 4x6'

This has been a year long project as I met with the CEO and Chief of Staff in June, 2012 after they googled "collage artist" and my name came up. I listened to the presentation and vision for this collage and after research and many hours it was approved. After I had two back to back workshops I just could not see how I could complete this larger collage. I can manage a 20x20" high heel in my studio but I doubted this would even fit in my living room. I had to decline and within a few hours 3 of my collage artist friends said we'll help you and one of them had a large studio space where we could keep the panels out and ready to glue our papers. I ordered gallons of gel, canvas and varnish and brushes and away we glued for most of the fall and winter. We used the foundation's papers they had been accumulating and our client wants to remain anonymous. We didn't work every day but we did have lots of "lunch" meetings for discussions and we worked with the client making adjustments as the work progressed with the quote and the hands. What a learning experience this has been with the knowledge you have some very good and hard working friends. Thanks to Maryann Stephens, Connie Michael and Karen Foster, some of my Canvas by Canvas friends, and to Dennis Hevia our photographer.
Our client sent a truck for the panels and the collage is hanging somewhere in the North Texas area and the photographs have been mailed and we're waiting to see our project hanging with the new owners.
A "Working" Lunch at the Blue Mesa

Why not throw some paper?.. it's Maryann studio.

I've been following along on my friend and artist Dreama Tolle Perry's virtual trip to France. She went. I didn't. Here are my latest journal entries.

My art journal workshop has been rescheduled for later in the summer. Please email me if you are interested. It will be at the Dutch Art Gallery in Dallas for one day. My email is NancyStandlee@sbcglobal.net. If someone invites you on a virtual vacation, grab your sketchbook, pen and watercolors and hop on board. It is a fun way to travel and you get to sleep in your own bed. The above sketchbook came from Michaels (with a coupon) and it's a Daler Rowney Cachet 7x10 with a magnetic flap and a brush, 120 lb and takes watercolor well.

My one day collage workshop July 27 can be read about HERE.http://dutchartgallery.net/event/nancy-standlee-torn-paper-collage/

If your check supply is getting low remember I have some images on personalized checks with Check Advantage. Here is one of the torn paper collage high heels.
