"Peace - Southwest" ~ Textured Acrylic Mixed Media Collage ~ CBC

"Peace - Southwest"
8 x 10 inches on Canvas Board
Textured Acrylic Mixed Media Collage with Foil and Painted Paper

This was a personal painting I finished this long weekend at the lake house with my CBC peeps. It will be entered into the FWCAC 9 x 12 works on paper show.
Some techniques: (for more info on highlighted topics, just click)
It was textured with two different compounds to build up the layers and thickness with a palette knife and added embossed foil with symbols and covered with a hardening agent, and sgraffito, stencil work and this can really become the ugly stage. Add some colorful glazes with liquid acrylics and metallics and a painting begins to emerge. At times, it will be too dark, too light, too bright, too metallic but there is a continuous push and pull trying to get it to what you first envisioned or maybe it will become completely something different.
If you'd like to try some of these techniques, get the Creative Catalyst DVD by Jacqueline Sullivan, Acrylics: Textures, Layers and Metallics. I have been working in a more traditional painted paper technique but Jacqueline's DVD shows the unlimited possibilities of collage. I watched it several times while working on the painting below as a prototype for the Canvas by Canvas group to use for ideas at our lake house retreat. It went through many, many ugly stages and uses many of the techniques listed above with the addition of some hand painted collage papers for the trees.

"Peace" by NS
16 x 20 inches on Canvas 3/4" deep

Here we are arriving at the lake house near Gun Barrel City Thursday morning, Canvas by Canvas, ready to tackle an original painting for our Park Cities Presbyterian Church entry. Margie Whittington has posted on the Canvas by Canvas blog the result of the painting by the members present. We had a beautiful rented house by the lake, great food (we take turns providing the meals) and our goal was to complete our entry. Each member present brought ideas, painting supplies and some prototype ideas of their own. Before the first planning session some decided to visit the Canton Trade Days for more art supplies, vintage books or just walk and look.

This was my first trip not driving but I really thought I would have to take my own car as the boxes and tubs were being piled up on the front porch. But Karen, besides be one of the best "lifters" is also one of the best packers, so I rode with her this trip. That is not all my supplies and it does include some of her things.
More paintings will be posted on this site this week with other links so check back. We stayed until Sunday afternoon and got a lot accomplished, both collaboratively and personal paintings.
