Frida Kahlo journal page start

I will add some print/lettering and more information later but I wanted to post this recent collage to show one of the things that will be covered in the workshop. This is an altered photo collage with some painting/glazing with liquid acrylics at the art journaling workshop at Dena's Ranch that is soon, soon. I finished this yesterday so you see I'm working down to the wire. As I'm looking through old journals and reading entries, I've found a theme in my journals, "Lose weight/walk and clean/straighten house." I promise not to mention either in the workshop.
I loved the Frida movie in 2002, and I had to buy the music from the movie CD, and when I traveled to Mexico for a workshop, I found a wonderful beach wrap/shawl where her face completely covered the background and a plastic tote bag with her image with a monkey. (All which I had to put in my travel journal.) I found an unusual handmade Frida necklace that I wanted on the last morning at the market there but felt like it was too expensive and I've regretted it ever since. I've ordered and received this EBay one and I'm very pleased with it and I can wear it when I'm feeling "very Frida".
One of her quotes I like is "I paint my own reality. The only thing I know is that I paint because I need to, and I paint whatever passes through my head without any other consideration." That's the way journaling is. Paint what is in your head and your life and not what everyone else is doing.
Sketchbook Project:
This is a little surprise for the workshop group. I've signed up for the Sketchbook project 2011 and I hope each person will agree to add a page or two. I'm waiting for the sketchbook to arrive. I chose the theme "Storybook".. wonder if an ex elementary librarian was thinking of her favorite phrase "Once upon a time?"
No, I've never entered before and don't know a whole lot about it but I have a little motto.."what if, why not" so let's go for it. I've also paid to have it digitized so we should be able to view it online after it's mailed back. All of you coming to Dena's be thinking about a short personal story to share and illustrate in this book or maybe something that happens when you are there. We'll figure it out together.

This is one of my favorite pieces I did while at the workshop and will probably try some others later. It is very difficult for me to get a good photo of anything with gold in it without it getting a bad glare. In the painting below I lifted up the edge so the painting is not square and the acrylic gloss medium made it shiny.

This is a great technique and Lana had some stunning pieces on a large piece of Strathmore. I didn't get to the workshop with my large piece but I used this 10" to learn the technique. This has lots of gel and gesso from a squeeze bottle for the lines.

About the Lana Grow workshop:
Two friends, Pat and Marie, told me about the workshop in Granbury, TX. October 19-23, 2009, and I'm so glad I made the effort to go and it was an effort as I came home from the Liz Hill workshop on Sunday evening, unloaded and loaded and drove over early Monday morning. Lana, A.W.S. is an excellent teacher and gives the kind of workshop she says she would want to take and I would recommend this one to anyone who wants to pursue some experimental abstract using acrylic paints. She won me over when she handed out a 3 ring binder of approximately 50 pages filled with wonderful notes about the techniques we'd be covering this week. She and her husband Norm, drove down from Minnesota so she brought lots of work to show us and all kinds of supplies to share.
In many workshops on the last day about 10:00 A.M. the instructor starts packing up and many do not have a demo that day. I could tell you some stories about some of the experiences. This class began on time at 9:00 A. M. and it was push, push all week and because she knew some would need to leave early on Friday and she wanted us to get our "money's worth" she had us all arrive at 8:00 A. M. Friday the last day of the class. Lana was always upbeat and sharing of all of her techniques and if you want to learn about acrylic or abstracts try to take one of her workshops.

Nicholas Simmons Workshop ~ Thursday, June 12, 2008 ~ Poured Paintings

Here we are in day four of the Nicholas Simmons Workshop at Artists' Showplace in Dallas, TX. and this is a surprise day as Nick was a little secretive about our paintings for Thursday and Friday, wanting it to be a surprise.

Today I worked on my first poured painting on a canyon type design with successive liquid acrylic colors poured in layers using a full sheet of watercolor paper, which is large to me. The power of the Da Vinci fluid acrylics is apparent with the individual washes remaining transparent and not absorbing the previous layer. This is a little more difficult than the finished painting might appear and there were a lost of gasps and “help me’s” heard around the room during the many layering and drying process.

The one below is my attempt and I haven't placed a "soaring bird" in it as I decided I'd better find a reference instead of "winging" it. One thing I will try and improve next time is that last dark wash as mine was too opaque but this was a new process to me and we were all working hard not to get an unwanted run across the page (canyon) while manipulating the paper and to leave a few edges showing of each wash we did.

Nick is a contributing member of Wet Canvas and most artist's would enjoy reading the articles he has presented on Wet Canvas.
