The envelope please - for the last entry, a cupcake collage, for the Fort Worth Community Arts Center Show, FWCAC 9 x 12 annual show. The deadline is November 15 so start looking for those 9 x 12 envelopes and entries - on paper and it has to fit inside a 9 x 12 envelope to mail.

I'm still unpacking from the 3 day art journal workshop "Love Your Life" I taught at The Upstairs Gallery studio this weekend and some of the students expressed some interest in a two day collage workshop. I think a cupcake would be a great first project and we could paint papers and attach maps on day one - guess that would be optional on a map background and collage a cupcake on the second day and they would have time to begin a personal painting. The attaching a Texas map would be up to them. I just like the extra graphic lines and text running through the background. Each collage artist will develop their own personal style quickly. The use of the artist's own painted and designed papers and personal images makes for an original work. I thought about that article yesterday when I delivered 3 collage paintings, the longhorn collage, goat collage, and donkey collage to the Visual Expressions Art Gallery for a show and exhibit. In the back of their art center some creative artists are adding Texas themed mosaic designs around the columns. How very stunning. If you taken a class there at the Creative Arts School you are invited to show. Several years ago I took a Myrna Wacknov workshop there. The crow and red bird would make a great collage painting. A friend Margie Whittington, one of the CBC members sent me this Fort Worth Fat Stock Show Goat photo and I made a hand painted paper collage painting for the FWCAC 9 x 12 show and entries are due November 15. The painting must fit inside a 9 x 12 envelope. I also used some found papers, vintage stamps and my signature Texas map in the background.

Here is a photo at the Upstairs Gallery studio for my "Love Your Life" art journal class. On Saturday we had 10 students and some visitors to drop by. Lots of door prizes that I mentioned in my last blog post but thanks again to Creative Catalyst for the wonderful DVD's and to Strathmore for the Visual Journals. Looks life fun doesn't it? I see Scherry's pear she had planned to have for lunch but decided to draw and paint it before she ate it. Yesterday we painted things we loved and were near each day, today we painted things we might encounter on travel, people, faces, architecture and we made a few stamps. No more art journal classes scheduled until in May at Dena's ranch. What exciting days to spend with new friends who enjoy making journal entries.

This painting is on its way to the 2010 6th Annual 12BUY12 Juried Art Show at the Austin Art Space Gallery & Studios, Austin, Texas. "Good Coffee" and "Mr. Rooster" were accepted into the show juried by Carl McQueary who curates exhibits at the Austin Museum of Art and Laguna Gloria. You can view last year's opening party on their web site at www.AustinArtSpace.com or you are invited to attend the Opening Reception Saturday, November 20, 2010 (5-9 PM) at 7739 Northcross Drive, Suite Q, Austin, TX 78757. The show dates are November 16-December 18.

My friend, collage artist, Suzy Pal, will also be in the show with her collage, Lone Star.
We both like to use Texas maps for backgrounds and she uses more found papers in her collage work.

There are many different styles in collage work but so many artists like to use postage stamps in their art - just Google postage stamps in collage and you will find thousands of links to examples. Postal stamps are one of the most distributed works of art in the world. Check out this artist Yao Shaown that has a figurative piece entirely made of stamps.

I've had so many comments on my blog about wanting to try collage or wishing they could and I will be giving a workshop sometime in 2011 about the process and more details to follow. Out in West Texas Suzy has already gotten a workshop planned. Each artist's work will be original when they paint their own papers and use their own images to work from. Until the workshops, I encourage you to try this method of painting and what is so great you don't have to be an "artist" to try it. It's been around since the first little lady glued a butterfly wing to a mask. There is a lot of room out here in the collage world for each artists' interpretation. Start saving interesting looking papers.

"Now is the Time"

Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country. That is a sentence I've typed many times during typing class warm-ups in high school. Another variation is "Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their party." It's something I've never forgotten and type it when trying out computer keyboards. It might be better to use a sentence with all the letters of the alphabet, such as "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog." Which sentence is preferred, I'm glad I took Mrs. Box's typing in high school before hints of blogging posts and emails. I never quite grasped shorthand.

I'm taking an online class called Texture Town and this was a class assignment to apply gel and write in it. I didn't try to write carefully or very legibly and most have been organic shapes in my projects but these figures kept appearing. It thought it a fitting post for today.

Plaid Enterprises sent me some of their wonderful products to try and the above "Feed the Birds" mixed media hand painted paper collage was made with some of them. I used Mod Podge paper to attach the papers and I used some of their colors to paint the papers, including Parchment, Champagne, Pure Orange, Coffee Bean, Berry Wine, Licorice and the lovely Peach Fuzz. I also used some found papers, vintage stamps, and maps to complete this mixed media paper collage painting.

A suggestion for "collage fodder". Check out an AAUW book fair sale such as the one today in Arlington. It was the last day and half price and I found some great vintage books and sheet music that will find a new life in one of my collages. Thrift shops and Goodwill stores will have used books that might be suitable for collage work.
