Goofy Bird ~ Acrylic Skins ~ Robert Burridge Workshop by Texas Artist Nancy Standlee

"Goofy Bird"
7 1/2 x 11 in on 140 watercolor paper using acrylic skins

I've been in Dallas for the Robert Burridge workshop and today we watched Bob paint his "Circus Birds" using the dried paint skins from his palette as a collage. He peels them off and attaches to his paper/canvas with acrylic gel. Naturally I had to try it and some of mine looked a little menacing so I chose one that looked more "normal". To see some of Bob's birds see his Artsy Fartsy Newsletter February 2008, and on how to make the skins see November 2010 and you can subscribe for his monthly Artsy Fartsy newsletter for free. On his home page there is a YouTube video posted about the circus birds acrylic "skins". He uses a 4 mil plastic for a palette so the dried acrylic peels off easily and try one of these birds and see if you don't laugh in the process. On this page there are a few more of the birds with his circus series.

This is Bob with one of his Circus Birds and this may give you a clue why I named my bird a "Goofy Bird". I'll come up with a more clever named bird later.
A more serious (can there be such a thing in one of his workshops?) theme is his works for the painting of the month club. Twelve paintings a year in a 6 x 9 in. format and matted. Contact Kate@RobertBurridge.com for information on how to join this exclusive club.

Fort Worth Billy ~ Goat Collage ~ Mixed Media Painted Paper Painting by Texas Contemporary Artist Nancy Standlee

Fort Worth Billy  SOLD
8 x 8 " on canvas board

A friend Margie Whittington, one of the CBC members sent me this Fort Worth Fat Stock Show Goat photo and I made a hand painted paper collage painting for the FWCAC 9 x 12 show and entries are due November 15. The painting must fit inside a 9 x 12 envelope. I also used some found papers, vintage stamps and my signature Texas map in the background.

Here is a photo at the Upstairs Gallery studio for my "Love Your Life" art journal class. On Saturday we had 10 students and some visitors to drop by. Lots of door prizes that I mentioned in my last blog post but thanks again to Creative Catalyst for the wonderful DVD's and to Strathmore for the Visual Journals. I you haven't signed up for their FREE visual journal classes starting in January, please click HERE.
Looks life fun doesn't it? I see Scherry's pear she had planned to have for lunch but decided to draw and paint it before she ate it. Yesterday we painted things we loved and were near each day, today we painted things we might encounter on travel, people, faces, architecture and we made a few stamps. No more art journal classes scheduled until in May at Dena's ranch. What exciting days to spend with new friends who enjoy making journal entries.

"Good Coffee" ~ Painted Paper Mixed Media Collage by Texas Daily Painter Nancy Standlee

"Good Coffee"
12 x 12 in. Painted Paper Mixed Media Collage on gallery wrapped canvas

I worked on this piece at the CBC paint out at the lake house. I've also entered it into the Austin 12 x 12 juried show.
The deadline for entries was October 20. I've entered 3 pieces so we'll see if any get in.
On this collage piece I've used some images from a Starbucks sack, some hand painted papers using my handmade stamps, some collage images from old paintings and pages from a vintage magazine.
"Good Coffee" reminds me of the beginning of my day and heading to the kitchen, grinding the beans and waiting for that first cup in my favorite mug. I tell the
CBC girls each time we rent the lake house "I'll bring the coffee" and I will get the pot prepared the night before so first one up always know to plug it in and then we can be found on the patio drinking that delicious first cup and discussing what paintings will be worked on first.
If you are interested in collage, a cup of coffee is a great image to experiment with as there are thousands of Google images to use or photograph your own favorite mug filled with your special blend. If you have the Google tool bar installed you can search blogs, the internet or for specific images for inspiration and then add your own style to the art work with your hand painted papers, stamping or with magazine pages such as the artist below.

I have a West Texas friend, Suzy Pal, that is working with collage but using magazine images so find your favorite way of working and join us in our collage journey. Congratulations to Suzy for winning an honorable mention in the Midland show for "Rodeo Clown".
I've added a link on my blog to Collage Making for those interested in any kind of collage. I haven't looked at all the blogs and websites yet but I know there are some goodies to be found.
I have recently joined another blog Mixed Media Artists International and we don't have many subscribers yet but I see the subscription box has been added and if you work in Mixed Media why don't you join us? Try some coffee collages using your choice of techniques and paper and post with us.

Some of you have read previous blog posts and know that I'm taking an online class at Texture Town and here is lesson 4 examples on 5 x 7" canvases of some of the colors we will be using. Now I'm ready to start working with some of the heavily textured pieces.

Painted Paper Longhorn Collage ~ Jo Sonja ~ Texas Daily Painter Nancy Standlee

"Tumbling Tumbleweeds"
Painted Paper Collage

Now on view at the Shanley House for the Granbury Juried Fall Festival Art Show and Sale, September 24-October 28. The reception was Saturday, September 25 and some surprising news. The above mixed media longhorn collage received an Award of Excellence, accompanied with a nice cash prize and a medal. Thank you. And thanks to my fellow, Canvas by Canvas painter friend, Connie for letting me use her fabulous longhorn photo. The Shanley House Gallery is located at 224 No. Travis, Granbury, TX. Art from the show can be viewed online HERE.

"Texas Tabasco" is one of my favorite Canvas by Canvas longhorn paintings and all 8 of us were photographing longhorns at every opportunity for some longhorn paintings. We have found when the animals are intent upon grazing little can distract them, yodeling, whistling, and all the hey-you's don't matter in the least. The Shanley House show judge said that "Tumbling Tumbleweeds" has personality and Connie, I've always loved that photo and thanks again for letting me use it. I don't know how you got his attention but you did good.

I received a Facebook Message from
Chroma's Artists' Paints & Mediums that I was one of three August 2010 winners of their Jo Sonja Vintage Color Collection. I think these colors will make awesome painted paper collages with names like Cobblestone, Sea Grass, Russet, Husk, and Tarragon. The winners of the contest were randomly selected and chosen from comments made on the Chroma's Artists Facebook page. Thanks again Chroma for the gift.

Mixed Media Painted Paper Collage ~ "Jessie" ` Grand Prairie Arts Council Show by Texas Daily Painter Nancy Standlee

"Jessie"
15" x 22" Watercolor, acrylic, charcoal on paper NFS

This mixed media (watercolor, acrylic, collage with painted papers) is on display at the Grand Prairie Memorial Library until Saturday, September 25, 10 am. I had two paintings accepted in the Grand Prairie Arts Council Annual Juried Art Show and Sale. I had posted her previously HERE. (click on link)

This is a not so good photo with the frame. I do not have my technique down for taking a photo after the painting is framed but I wanted to tell you about Franken Frames.
Franken Frames is a small Tennessee company that will make your frame to order, gives excellent service and as I found out today extremely good packing. I felt like it was magic show time as I pulled out paper after paper packing for the floater frames for two collages that will go to the AMA show. Call Roger to ask for a catalog 1-800-322-5899.

Acrylic on Gallery Wrap Canvas
30 x 24 in.
This is the other painting I have in the Grand Prairie show. The opening reception was Sunday and was well attended.

Longhorn Collage ~ "Tumbling Tumbleweeds" by Texas Daily Painter Nancy Standlee

"Tumbling Tumbleweeds"
16" x 20" on MDF board Acrylic paper collage

I have so many longhorn photographs since our collaborative painting group, Canvas by Canvas, has painted several longhorns. This particular photo was taken by Connie Michael and I've always thought it a great pose. To get the longhorn's attentions we've yodeled (and we can't yodel), played loud music, brought them snack bars, anything. We'll be driving along and if a longhorn has spectacular horns and is close to a fence, someone will yell, "Photo Op" and out we'll run and hope the chiggers or snakes are sleeping. On my previous posts I've given links to others who paint with paper and I think you would enjoy visiting those links.
Wow, oh, wow, there is paper everywhere and little bitty pieces to boot but I'm not throwing any of them out. I painted most of these papers either in workshops or for a particular project. The background is a map I got of the Cedar Creek area and Gun Barrel City where we rent a lake house and go for a long painting weekend.
I'm giving an art journaling workshop at Dena's Ranch the last of July. One class is filled but there may be room in the 2nd class. Call Dena and see. We will have some fun for sure, painting entries about our daily life in the "Love Your Life" class.

Altered Book ~ Art Journaling Workshop ~ Love Your LIfe ~ Texas Daily Painter Nancy Standlee

Book Used: Women's Health approx 8 x 11 altered page with gesso, acrylic fluid and tube paints, scraffito, graphite, china marker, permanent marker, collage with a stamp I made and stamped on newspaper.
I was supposed to be doing anything but this today but I've become so excited about the workshop at Dena's Ranch in July I could not stay away from this altered book today. You are invited to join us at workshop at Dena's near Marble Falls and there will be two three day sessions, first one July 19, 20, 21 and the second will be 23, 24, and 25. Beginners welcome. We will discuss altered books one day and we will work in an inexpensive used book, tear out pages, gesso pages, paint in it and experiment in it similar to working in a new blank journal. It's just another way to journal. The first two days we will use traditional watercolor techniques.

Dena has just recently added the 2nd session which will come first and if it doesn't fill I thought that we could go into Marble Falls and eat pie at the Blue Bonnet Cafe. Carol Nelson mentioned on Facebook "It's always nice to have a backup plan involving pie."
We will discuss and experiment with making some of our own stamps quickly and working small. I made this one this morning and stamped it on newsprint. I have always like the addition of newsprint in a collage. Nothing involved or fancy. I have those stamp making supplies with Master Carve but it would take too long and we need to experiment with several techniques that doesn't involve cutting with Exacto knives. If you would like more information, contact Dena at dena@wenmohsranch.com or
call 830 825-3465.

Carol Nelson Workshop ~ Denver, CO. ~ "Butterfly Dreams" by Texas Daily Painter Nancy Standlee

"Butterfly Dreams"
6" x 5 1/2" Tyvek, Venetian Plaster, Acrylic Paints on MDF board

Our Carol Nelson Class at the Arvada Art Guild Workshop

If this is your first visit to this blog, the previous post will give more information about this Carol Nelson workshop. Working and playing with Tyvek paper was the next step while our textured surfaces were drying.
I always like these instructions:
Carol "There is no right or wrong day to do this".
Take a piece of Tyvek paper and paint both sides with acrylic paints with colors you might use in one of the projects. Dry and iron. You may have some Tyvek around your house in the form of old Fedex envelopes. It's also available in 60 foot rolls at the hardware store if you go into production but you might find scraps around a construction site as it's used in construction as a vapor barrier.
Other uses - go to YouTube and just type in the key word Tyvek for more options. You will find lots of videos for making a wallet. Here's a neat wallet for sale but don't iron this one.
We found that when painting it worked better to use thinner applications of fluid acrylics or tubes. Just experiment to find the correct solution. One student made a beautiful piece using some metallic paint and sprinkled with gold flakes while the paint was still wet. My kind of bling. Paint both sides using different colors for more choices and dry before ironing.
If you're finicky about your iron, at this point you can protect the ironing board and iron by placing the painted and dried Tyvek in a parchment paper sandwich. Put the iron on cotton heat and press up and down and not the "iron a shirt" back and forth motion. You'll soon understand how much and how long to apply. If you lift the parchment and your Tyvek has disintegrated then that's way too long. Just a few taps and a look see at first but I really like the effect of a few holes. The Tyvek will make bubble shapes in various sizes and angles and lots of nice crevices.
Here is a big article on Tyvek or just Google for more choices.
In the above piece, I cut out the area that appealed to me and then used Yes glue to attach it to the textured board and used some coordinating acrylic paint and who doesn't like red. The section reminded me of a butterfly wing. The final varnish has not been applied. Check back soon for another post about this fabulous workshop.

Saundra Lane Galloway in her Art for Life Blog has added some posts about the workshop.

Here is another slide show from the workshop. Mouse over for the captions.

"Sophie" ~ watercolor figure by Texas Daily Painter Nancy Standlee

"Sophie"
17" x 23" watercolor with acrylic and collage

I drew this last Tuesday at a drawing session with Michael Mentler at the Society of Figurative Arts in Carrollton. Do I feel way out of my league? Oh, yes. Google Michael Mentler and images and you'll see why. His sketchbooks are fabulous. The morning session was portraits (a young man posed) and the afternoon was an undraped figure. He will have an intensive weekend class sometime after the first of the year but until then it has inspired me to get out my Bridgman and other drawing books. How I need to draw some each day from the book examples. O.K. so we need to exercise a little, draw a little, paint a little, cook a little, sleep a little... there is just not enough time in the day to do all of this. I don't know how I ever found time to work.
"Sophie" may not be finished yet. Once you get your painting on the computer screen you see some areas that need some work. Also, an experienced painter that I respect suggested I break up some of the thigh area with some collage and I may do that.
During the afternoon, I kept drawing these little figures in the middle of my sketchbook page and I could hear Liz Hill saying "Fill that page up with the figure. Make it touch the edge." So I got out my biggest Strathmore Watercolor pad, held my breath and drew directly on the paper and then did the painting at home using watercolor, acrylic, Daniel Smith gold gesso and lots of hand printed collage paper.

Sandi D'Alessando Workshop Part 2 ~ Texas Daily Painter Nancy Standlee

"The Dressing Room"
16" x 20"
Acrylic and collage on gessoed foam core

This has been a busy workshop schedule with Liz Hill, Lana Grow, Fealing Lin, and now Sandi D'Alessandro and a daughter's wedding on Saturday, Nov. 7 at a Burleson winery. The wedding was still very much on my mind when we came to the project with the foam core and I remembered the dressing room area with curling irons, girls in stages of dress, and wine and I painted and collaged some of the memories.

Here is a slide show of some of Sandi's work and student's work and the disclaimer. Some of the student's work was very abstract and when you're snapping photos quickly I may not have them turned correctly and some were taken in an overhead mirror and the image may be reversed and I didn't include names of the artists. "The Board of Directors" ~ Watercolor ~ by Daily Painter Nancy Standlee

"The Board of Directors"

9 x 12 inches Watercolor
Strathmore Bristol Smooth 100 lb.
Watercolor and collage and charcoal

Liz Hill:
I've been busy gathering supplies for the
3 day Liz Hill workshop. I know I'm taking too much "stuff" but when the supply list has watercolor, gouache, acrylic and collage paper, isn't that just about your whole studio? We will be working on hot press watercolor paper. Liz from the Woodlands, is one of the Daily Painters of Texas and that is where I first saw her work and love what she does with line and wash.
Alex Powers:
Liz said in an email that she liked Alex Powers work and his book, "Painting People in Watercolor" so I've revisited the book and have gotten weary of packing and had to try out some charcoal line drawing (6B soft) on a Strathmore Bristol tablet I had. (Alex uses Strathmore 2 ply in the book.) His take (probably) on my attempt "Read the book again". He will be in the area in 2011 and I plan to take his workshop then.
The Model:
We will have a model each day and I thought I might need a little warm up to keep the anxiety to a minimum level. In the small piece above, I added some collage pieces of a metroplex map from the newspaper, a stamp, a piece of gold paper, a hand decorated paper and some text, then I can't leave the gold pen alone. I should be spending time on improving my drawing skills. I hate to be drawing figures in a group from a live model. I'll try to stay in the back and cover my work when anyone gets near. And I'm really not comfortable when the model takes a break and walks around to view how I've drawn her.. and then trying to explain that unflattering something ..hummm, well, I ... I haven't drawn in a while or I need to warm up more...I wonder if she'll believe those old lines.
Visit again to see the work from the workshop and I think you'd enjoy a visit to Liz's blog and an exhibit.

Gerald Brommer Workshop ~ Week One ~ Collage

Collage Figure
7" x 11"
Gerald Brommer has presented 2 weeks of workshops at the Artists' Showplace Gallery. I enjoyed the first week so much, Stained Papers and Collage, when an opportunity to take the second week came, Designing with Watercolor or Acrylics and Collage, I jumped at the chance. The above figure was not one of the assignments but by the end of the week I did a figure when we were on our own.
For the first few days we were working with pure collage with our stained watercolor washi papers and later we began adding more paint. We were cautioned against turning these into paintings but let some of the collage show.
We could add anything that would stick to the support, 300 pound watercolor paper, with acrylic mat medium.
Jerry said, "Don't talk to a collage artist about archival. Who cares if it lasts forever and if it starts to fall apart?
Good. It will make it more interesting. Kurt Schwitters (20th century master of collage) used wine labels and newsprint."
We purchased a packet of 20 various
washi papers about letter size and one of the samples had fragments of the Bangkok Daily News in it (certainly not archival). How wonderful and freeing is that. He also stated, "Paint to please yourselves and hope that others like it" and "Don't over think this. There are no mistakes with collage - just add another piece of paper until it gets so heavy you can't lift it."
Radial Design
11" x 11"
Radiating from a central core. One of about 12 designs we studied. I supplemented some of the painted washi papers with some acrylic painted pieces from the Anne Bagby workshop and from the Carrie Burns Brown workshop.
Jerry Brommer
Collage artist, story teller (the Hittite story was memorable) author of books, books, books, 35 plus art books and some are used in high schools and colleges, educator, juror and scholar and a very enthusiastic master of watercolor and collage painting methods. I guess it would be correct to say he wrote the book on it. Check back later for future posts on the workshop. There is great hope in collage that when your children put you in the "home" and you're not allowed to have scissors you can still enjoy collage, just tearing up and gluing it down again.

The Upstairs Gallery Show ~ May 9-23, 2009

The three pieces below photographed together as they might be hung for a grouping. Click on the image for a larger view.

#1

#2

#3
These are acrylic works I completed in the Robert Burridge workshop in April. The 3 6"x 6" (1 1/2" depth) collage mixed media pieces can be purchased separately or as a group. I used acrylic paint, acrylic medium, various papers, and stamping and I was working on all 3 at the same time striving for some continuity. Could I reproduce these again? After looking at them again this morning I kept asking "Now how did I do that?" and "What did I do here?" I see small papers from the Anne Bagby workshop and some stamping with the stamp she awarded for best use of line and some gold paint touches and lots of texture. I think there are a few pieces from the Carrie Burns Brown Workshop in Austin several years ago. That's what I find interesting about discussions about copying others work.. I find it difficult to copy my own.

Indigo Floral #1

Indigo Floral #2

Indigo Floral Duet #1 and #2 12" x 12" (3/4" depth wrapped canvas) Acrylic with some stamping These two are pure Burridge (I painted them but I sure tried to use his methods) from the workshop with lots of negative painting and drawing back into the design with a pencil, a Derwent Sketching Wash 8B, one of his favorites to use. I used some stamping and then brushed back over it to blend some edges and then highlight one flower to stand out and say "look at me." These can be purchased separately or as a pair. J. T. Martin of the Upstairs Gallery has invited all adult students to participate in its annual studio show and sale, May 9-23 and the opening reception will be May 9 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. The purpose is to thank the students for their support and to share their artworks with the community. This is a great time to view others work and socialize and see what new foods J.T. creates for the refreshment table. Join us if you're in the area.
