Save the Date, Canvas by Canvas Reception, Graham TX by Texas Artist Nancy Standlee

This is the card that one of our CBC members, Cindy Yandell Parker, designed for our upcoming show. A Few of Our Favorite Things, at the Old Post Office Museum and Art Center in Graham, Texas. I belong to the collaborative group, Canvas by Canvas, and the painting on the left is one of our newest paintings, Wine on the Vine. Each member paints one square and the separate paintings are combined for the complete image. All eight of us will exhibit some of our personal paintings and the image on the right shows some of these individual paintings. We invite you to the opening reception Sunday, April 22, 2012 from 2:00 PM until 4:00 PM. The Old Post Office Museum is located at 500 3rd St. Graham, TX 76450, and telephone is 940 549-1470. The show runs from April 16-May 18, 2012 and includes work in watercolor, acrylic, oil, mixed media, epoxy resin and collage. The artists will be at the reception and would love to meet you and answer any questions about their art and unique technique. Artists represented from Arlington, TX are Karen Foster, Barbara Hackney, Nancy Standlee, Maryann Stephens, and Elizabeth "Betty" Taylor, from Fort Worth, Connie Michael and Margie Whittington and from Graham, Cindy Yandell Parker. The gallery is open Tuesday thru Friday from 9 AM to 4 PM and closed at lunch from 11:30 to 12:30.

Below is one of my personal paintings that will be in the show.

Some of you may already know that I started some oil painting workshops in January with Peggi Kroll Roberts in CA. and then in March was in Tucson to study with her again. Before the workshops I purchased some of her DVD's to study and now this week I see she has 6 new ones out HERE and you can watch a very short YouTube clip about individual DVD's when you click "more information click here" under each DVD. I enjoyed the study of concentrating on a specific problem and painting along with her in these approximately 45 minute sessions. Additional segments on each DVD include her supply list and more of her paintings.

This is one of my favorites I painted from one of Peggi's DVD's from the first lessons and yes, I've placed my order for set three.

Apple Daily Paintworks Challenge Painting byTexas Contemporary Artist Nancy Standlee

"I'm Off to the Gala. Don't Wait Up"
8"x 8" oil painting on gesso board ready to frame

I have an online gallery at Daily Paintworks, click HERE, and each week some artist will issue a challenge to paint a subject and anyone can contribute a painting. See the current challenges HERE. Recently, Carol Marine issued a "pare your apple challenge", draw off the apple and divide it into areas of color before painting. This is my entry and in my setup I used one of the handmade batik napkins I made in the 80's? Anyway it was a long time ago and they are hiding in a drawer because I rarely use a cloth napkin anymore. During the many dips in a dye bath I'd add a square of white muslin to help keep a record of the colors used. I ended up with a lovely assortment of napkins. Now the colorful squares are oils painted on a gesso board panel and today I'm framing it for the Graham show.

I found out that my Green Apples won Best of Show for the CFAI March challenge. Click HERE to see the painting. It is in a private collection. And good news non-members can contribute their paintings in this monthly challenge. The April challenge is "All Things".

Shows:
My hand painted paper and torn paper collages have been delivered to the FWCAC in Fort Worth, TX., for a show that runs from April 6 to to June 29, 2012. There will be 14 pieces in the show in the Cafe. Click HERE for more details.

I paint with a group of 8 collaborative artists, Canvas by Canvas, and we are preparing for a show "A Few of our Favorite Things", at the Old Post Office Museum in Graham TX in April and May. Each of the artists are also showing some of their personal work along with some new collaborative pieces. A reception will be held Sunday, April 22, 2012 at 2:00 PM and everyone is invited. The exhibit runs from April 16-May 18, 2012. The Old Post Office Museum and Art Center is at 500 3rd St, Graham, TX 76450, telephone 940 549-1470 and website http://www.opomac.net.

You are invited to view the art at these locations, join a challenge or comment on the blog post. Have a great April and I appreciate the ones who subscribe to and read this blog.

Seated Figure with Hat
Oil Painting 8x6 on canvas panel

This painting was begun in plein air in Tucson and finished in my studio yesterday and it's available from my gallery at Daily Paintworks HERE.

I belong to a collaborative painting group, Canvas by Canvas, and we are preparing for a group show at the Old Post Office Museum in Graham Texas in April and May. This is one of our completed paintings where each member paints one square. Each artist will also have some of our individual work hanging and I plan to take some of the new figurative oils. I hope that you will visit if you are in the area.

Girl at the Fountain 12043, Small Figurative Oil Painting by Texas Daily Painter Nancy Standlee

Girl at the Fountain
10x8 Oil on canvas panel, Small Figurative Painting

(Painting can be purchased through my gallery at Daily Paintworks HERE. Click to view image larger and then pay with Paypal.)

This small oil painting was begun in the Tucson plein air figurative workshop I've written about in the previous 2 blog posts with Peggi Kroll Roberts. We made lots of fast starts and studies and I've finished this one at home and made the needed corrections after I printed out my photo. My painting from model experience is very limited. I know they are paid a fee by the gallery and it's included in our workshop fee, then you should ask them if they mind if you take photos (a real necessity when you want to add details once back home.) On the first day of painting, the model wanted $10 per photo so I didn't take any reference photos since I thought that a little steep for my budget. Fortunately the second and third day model was more accommodating and said yes we could take photos. I gave her $20 for two days and I have no idea if that was in the ball park or not but if everyone in the class participated then that would give her a good tip and she worked hard all day, usually in the sun with numerous costume changes. I really appreciate her attitude of sharing as I have some great figurative photos to work from. Peggi discouraged us from working too long at one painting as she wanted us to get our "mileage in with the brush"  with many short poses and starts and I took 12 6x8 small panels for these small studies with the largest panels at 8x10. They all made it home in great shape in the Raymar wet panel carriers.
Now I will enjoy sitting down and working on some of these smaller panels with my NEW Karin Jurick easel that arrived yesterday. It looks like it will be just what I need to sit with my photos and my starts and complete a few more paintings after this totally boring job of gathering up income tax stuff...grrrr..

Girl with Orange, Small Figurative Oil Painting by Texas Contemporary Painter Nancy Standlee

Girl with Orange
10x8 small figurative oil painting on canvas panel
painted plein air Tucson AZ

(This painting is for sale on my Daily Paintworks Gallery HERE)

I returned Thursday afternoon from a 3 day plein air figurative workshop in Tucson with Peggi Kroll Roberts with the Tucson Art Academy. This was my second workshop with Peggi but this one was all plein air. See the first studio workshop discussed on my blog post HERE. I may be past my prime for plein air. See the photo below of all the supplies set up and all these were carried on the plane, to the car, to the motel, etc, etc and included an umbrella and a little folding chair which I rarely used.
I don't remember which day this was painted but it was one of my better efforts. I have lots of starts that I will finish in the comfort of my studio out of the hot Tucson sun. The first day we painted in the plaza at the art academy and the next two days we were invited to paint in the lovely garden of one of the students. Some of these little paintings will have some flowers but this one I decided on a more simple look.
I did have to buy one of Peggi's MVP art tools as seen HERE .
However, my suitcase was at 50 lbs. (the max) and they attached a HEAVY tag with directions for lifting so my shopping was very limited to what I could possibly wear back home or eat. Fortunately this little artist tool is very light in weight and extremely helpful in viewing your painting progression.

This photo was taken in Hope's beautiful garden and all of this stuff is mine when I'm first getting spread out and set up. I used an umbrella for the first time and that was a learning experience also. You can see the Raymar wet carriers as I chose to work in 6x8 and 8x10 sizes only.

Two Small Figurative Oil Studies from Peggi Kroll Roberts DVD by Texas Contemporary Artist Nancy Standlee

Figurative Oil Study from the Peggi Kroll Roberts DVD: Limited Strokes
7x9 on canvas panel

This 30 minute DVD was all about limiting the strokes in the painting and forcing to use enough paint to create the frosting like surface. These DVD lessons are designed to breakdown the painting fundamentals into "one-idea-at-a-time" exercises. I think I failed this one because I rebelled and didn't want to count my painting strokes as I was just so intent on getting paint down - maybe next time. If you'd like to read more about the DVD's Peggi has available, go HERE to her website.

Figurative Oil Study from the Peggi Kroll Roberts DVD: Simplified Figure Proportions
9x7 on Canvas Panel

This lesson was about basic figure measurements and proportion guidelines. Each DVD lesson concentrates on one subject and theme. This was about 44 minutes in length and explains how to use some standard measurements for an 8 head figure for correct placement of various body parts. This is an excellent study if you want to paint the figure in story telling situations.
This was study #9 and #10 so I have two more to complete for the 12 DVD set..woo hoo..

Small Oil Horse Painting ~ Daily Paintworks Weekly Challenge by Texas Contemporary Artist Nancy Standlee

"Horsing Around" DPW weekly Challenge 12035
9 x 7 oil on canvas panel
Horse Oil Painting

You can purchase this painting from my Daily Paintworks Gallery HERE

Each week someone issues a painting challenge at DPW and anyone can participate and it is a learning experience to see how other painters tackle the subject. I really like the Fauve look so I toned the canvas with an acrylic orange and let some of these complements peek through.

Are you always wondering about the correct spelling of GREY, GRAY? I found a simple explanation and an easy way to remember and I want to share it with you.
grAy ~ the American way to spell it "A"
grEy ~ the English way to spell it "E"
cool, huh?

Carol Marine talks about the importance of GRAY's in her Art Byte tutorial Saturation and Color Mixing. This is an excellent tutorial and I've watched it several times and have done some of the color chart exercises and I've found them to be very helpful in my stage of oil painting (early). Some of the Art Bytes are free and some have a small charge but they go into your library to view at any time. Enjoy some non fattening art bytes.
