I am one of a thousand plus artists who are participating in the September 30/30 painting challenge, paint each day and post on the Leslie Saeta blog. After awhile the paintings begin to stack up and the oils will need to dry before being shipped. I've devised this cardboard and plastic cups (different sizes for panels or gallery wrapped) structure to keep the space problem to a minimum.

 

If a painting states it is on gallery wrapped canvas it is usually on a 1.5" depth canvas that does not require framing. Here is a close up of what one of these paintings might look like with the sides painted and I coordinate the colors to the front of the painting.

In the previous post I mentioned I was painting in the Leslie Saeta 30/30 challenge and in times past I've blogged each day with the images and I've decided you may not want this many posts coming to your inbox and I will combine some of the entries. The Roses were started in a Nancy Franke workshop and needed work that I've now completed. The teapot is from a "peep" lunch at a Fort Worth tearoom where we sketched our lunch in our sketchbook journals. 

If it makes? I'm planning on teaching a 2 day sketchbook journaling class in Plains, TX at my friend's Suzy Powell, Backyard Gallery and Studio, October 17 and 18. Cut off date is September 15 when the decision will be made if it's a go. If you don't live in the area and need a place to stay the Rock'N N Bed and Breakfast is nearby. Hello friends, I haven't painted much this summer but I've been doing a lot of sketchbook journaling and more to come on that in future posts. I've also been trying to regroup and declutter but I'm not there yet but closer that I was 6 months ago. I wanted to join the hundreds in the new Leslie Saeta 30/30 painting challenge in September which is to paint 30 paintings in 30 days. White pitcher is day one and that means 29 more to go but if I don't make each one that is O.K. A challenge is an effort, a battle call and my theme is to revisit some workshop notes and some books while practicing painting. 
I saw this quote on Facebook and I will need it during this September painting marathon. "Instead of cleaning house I just watch an episode of Hoarders and think Wow my house looks great."

I joined Urban Sketchers August 16 and sketched in a Moleskine A4 journal with these two entries. 
This was before the meeting and some girl friends and I needed lunch in a tearoom and we sketched our lunch.

Atlanta Pears, Oil Still Life, Nancy Franke Workshop by Texas Painter Nancy Standlee

I was in Atlanta June 13 and 14 for the Nancy Franke oil workshop and we painted from still life set ups. See the first post here.



My spot in the workshop and fortunately the Atlanta Artists Center had easels.




I traveled on AA miles and you have to travel on their time so my flight was not until 8:30 PM (and late) on Sunday so I spent most of the day at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens. I enjoyed a fresh food demo by Megan McCarthy and the Garden has other recipes posted on their website.

I'm enjoying another virtual journal trip to France with Dreama and here are two pages from my Cachet 7x10 journal. If you have been in a Dreama workshop you know about these Big Girl Panties and the scale in the journal does not do them justice. These are huge and Dreama is petite so there must be a lesson here.

This two day workshop is all about you and how to record some of your life events.
This sketchbook journaling workshop will be an introduction to sketchbook journaling with pen and watercolor and will focus on YOU with  a "Love Your Life" theme. We will explore choices in sketchbooks and paints and palettes, examine some great reference books and I will demo techniques I use to keep various sketchbook journals. The student does not need any previous art experience or drawing experience but just needs to come with the desire to explore some possibilities of preserving some moments on their life journey. For example, we usually have some type of hot beverage each morning and it is a great beginning for an entry. Below is an entry I made in a previous art journal workshop of a favorite coffee cup. We will begin with a structured lesson like this and then students will be able to add their personal experiences to their journals for Day One. On Day Two, we will explore travel journals and architecture and people drawings.

Atlanta Roses, Oil Floral, Nancy Franke Workshop, Atlanta, GA by Texas Painter Nancy Standlee

I have enjoyed another two day workshop with Nancy Franke in Atlanta June 13 and 14 at the Atlanta Artist Center and Tom Quinn was a great host. The roses above were painted from fresh roses in a still life set up. Read more about the Gainesville workshop with Nancy in February HERE.  


Lunches were so convenient as we walked a few steps to Basil's Restaurant and enjoyed great food and the Atlanta view from the patio. We had a good class size at 10 and below is some of our lunch photos. I'll post some class room photos in the next blog about the workshop.

A new Schmincke Half-pan watercolor sets with 12 colors and 12 empty half pans I filled with my own colors. Sale still on at Wet Paint until the 15th.

I've been enjoying using some watercolors again and studying Joyce Hicks new book, Painting Beautiful Watercolor Landscapes,  and doing some of her exercises from the book and DVD's. If you are looking for a good watercolor book to study from, this one is a good choice. Explanations are clear and it has good demo instructions.

This seagull painting has sold and flown off to grace a beach house in Florida. I've always liked the muted colors in this one.
