"Stoney, Music and Motorcycles" 11042 ~ Torn Paper Portrait Collage Painting by Texas Daily Painter Nancy Standlee

"Stoney, Music and Motorcycles"
24x330x1.5 torn paper collage on canvas
NFS
This torn paper portrait collage painting is of one of my sons, Eric and his dog, Stoney. I gave a 2 day collage class to several of the Canvas by Canvas collaborative group and this was my demo piece. It will be varnished and delivered sometime this week.
I chose text and magazine images that describes some of Eric's interests and some of my feelings for him. That's some of the fun of doing a personal portrait of someone you know and searching for just the right text. Some of the text in this collage, "Don't go changin", No Fear, music notes near his mouth as he plays the harmonica in a band, "Boss" was my dad's name, "77" no meaning, just a nice graphic element, a cross, "The new rock star" is for Roxy, Stoney's friend who was left out, "S" for Stoney, "Boozefighters Motorcycle Club, National Chapter 69, and then my interpretation by finding "Where the wild things are".

I had to put a wheel in his bandanna because his love affair with wheels go way back. In the 60's there was a big plastic tricycle that sat close to the ground. He wore out two and learned if he put one wheel on the curb, pedal fast to gain speed, he could blast off the curb into the driveway opening into the street on two wheels..sorta a sideways wheelie. Guess the boy grew up as a "street biker". His father's name was Dan and I found a large Dance and wrapped the text around and he loved Italian bikes, Moto Guzzi, soI had to put Italy in the mix (and I've been to Italy.) Eric was born in California, lived in Virginia, and so "Hey, its OK.he's in Texas now, and wrapped on the side is "to make something happen, tell a Texan it can't be done.". I couldn't resist a little sweet, syrupy saying about Mom, I hid on the side "Mom...a son's first love, a daughter's best friend."...awwww..

If you try a collage, remember it will wrinkle. That's OK and you'll think you have the canvas covered but will keep finding blank spots for days and it can be very tiring because you are processing so many design element decisions at once. The hardest thing on this one I think was the beard and how to make a black boxer vary in color.

In a later post, I will show you the work done by the CBC members. In the fall, I may do a collage workshop in Granbury and one in Graham and there is a possibility of one in Arlington. If you are interested, send me your name. It would be a 2 day portrait collage. Well, I say portrait one person in the class did a chicken so we just called it a chicken portrait.

Empty Easel has some more of my paintings on line HERE in the Featured Artist section.

I joined Daily Paintworks in June and have been posting one painting a day. If you're on Facebook please LIKE our page HERE.We'd love to get one thousand likes. David Marine developed the site and will advertise this next Monday on  Design Sponge, a very popular design blog by Grace Bonney.

Thanks for visiting my blog and try collaging a family member or your pet or yourself (someone who won't fuss if you don't get it exactly right. It's great fun.) Just be aware of those stray pieces of red paper in the tub or the bed that have stuck to sticky hands. You are not hemorrhaging.
