Betty Crocker ~ Art Journal Pages

7"x10" watercolor "Betty Crocker"
Why is it when you are trying to drop a few pounds for the new year, your cookbooks fall off the shelves, screaming "try me, cook me?" I stand by my goal and painted it instead.

This is Cindy and her portrait that I painted which won a SWA award. You can read about it on my blog post HERE. Cindy is a great cat painter and one of the reasons she got her cat Clementine was to have a ready model.
Not too long ago, Cindy and I made a long car trip to Little Rock to exhibit a CBC painting and we were in the car together 10 plus hours and the conversation would always turn to food. When she was a tall, willowy New York model she wanted little to do with the cooking of food, just partaking. One week before her wedding and at age 20 Cindy had a revelation that it was soon to fall her lot to be responsible for the food that would be served in her home. At that ninth hour, her dear mother came to the rescue with a plan that each night they'd cook together a new dish for dinner, including a side dish. She got down the basics of pot roast, meat loaf, smothered steak, fried pork chops, salmon croquettes, red beans with cornbread, creamed tuna on toast, and chicken fried steak. She laughs and says for the longest time she never wavered with the side dishes that went with the main course. For instance, if she served fried pork chops always expect to see gravy, rice and LeSueur peas on the plate. Cindy relates she learned well and that first pot roast was perfect and wowed her new husband; however, she forgot the left over roast stored in the oven and about a week later they began searching for this noxious odor. These days she cooks less and spends her spare time painting Clementine.

The year began right with painting in my journal with friends at Maryann's and then dinner with a professional friend I'd lost contact with at Fish City Grill. On Sunday a steak at Hoffbrau and then parts 1-5 of John Adams and oh, my, it was wonderful. I have learned to spell Abigail and have since corrected it in my journal. This movie has given me a renewed appreciation for our country and the sacrifices made by our founders. David McCullough has done a great service to America to bring these characters alive.
Here's the day I painted my cookbook. This is one of my favorite possessions given to me in 1957, a first edition and fifth printing. The poetry I ever remember is on page 302 "Apple pie without cheese is like a kiss without a squeeze." I loved looking at instructions to make pineapple boats, grate my own coconut, and make sure I was serving my family from the basic 7 food groups. My mother sent me off to Tarleton Junior College, now Tarleton State University, in 1956 to major in Home Economics and Betty Crocker came along just like another text book that 2nd year. More boring medical stuff and oat bran muffins for cholesterol lowering and sometimes feeling like I'm moving in slow motion so - move it.

Cindy and I went to the Gamut Gala opening of their new Art Couture Gallery and you can read about it on the previous post and see David Fisher in the slide show. Last night, January 13, he appeared in NCIS and fortunately he wasn't killed off. David we'll be watching for you again.
On Sunday a new dish at the Macaroni Grill and parts 6 and 7 of John Adams - winner of the 2009 Golden Globe for best mini-series/tv movie. On the credit extras on the dvd, I learned that John Adams and Thomas Jefferson both died on July 4, 50 years after signing of the Declaration of Independence. Wow. Jack is back in 24 and what a horrible drawing. I put sunglasses on him to cover him up but he still looks like a kid down the street instead of big, bad Jack.

Art Couture Gallery ~ Gamut Control Gala

Vladimir Gorsky 1953-2008
No, this isn't my painting of Clint but one of many great paintings on display at a celebrity gala on Saturday evening presented by the Art Couture Gallery and Gamut Control.
Cindy and I were invited to visit with some international artists since I have contracted with Gamut to produce my giclees. During the evening there was a tribute to Mr. Gorsky.
We met up again with actor, writer, and painter David Dayan Fisher. He has been in Hollywood's National Treasure and you can see him Tuesday evening, January 13, on CBS NCIS. David said he usually gets killed off but on this series he has been invited back.
We met Jim Lively, Michael Kypuros, Reza Sepahdari, and Kim Klatt from Art Business News and had a lovely evening after dining at the nearby Capriccio Ristorante.

Here are some photos taken during the evening:

Lylas 2 ~ "Connie" Gamut Control ~ New Giclees

LYLAS 2

LYLAS 2 " Connie" Acrylic
9" x 12" Gallery Wrapped Canvas, 3/4" profile black (depth)

LYLAS is Internet slang for Love You Like A Sister (see this post) and this is the second in the series.
Last week Gamut Control made me two more giclees. One for "Shop Talking" and one for "Our Crystal Bridge", and the original was sent to the Bridging Heaven and Earth Foundation. See my entry at this site. Giclees can be ordered from me. Artists can contact the organization if they would like to participate in the Bridging project.
Check my web site for more information on Gamut's fine art reproduction process. John from Gamut said "Shop Talking" was the first giclee used to introduce the new Image Capture process. It will be formally introduced June 7. John said, "It came out better than the original." The process is no glare and eliminates cross filtering and maintains the texture and it is a 20 layer image. Here are my other images on the Gamut artist site.
Last week was the monthly SWS meeting and Gale Webb from Lubbock gave a great figurative demo painting with liquid acrylics. Thanks Gale and I'm sorry I missed your SWS workshop. H & R Block has been breathing down my neck. Aren't we glad April 15th is over for another year and we all promise to keep better records and receipts.

"Shop Talking" ~ "Treasures" Art Show Award ~ Creative Catalyst

"SHOP TALKING"
20" x 20" Giclee will be available soon
2nd in "Talking Series"
What a pleasant surprise to find in my email this morning the Creative Catalyst Winter Art Show "Treasures" 2007-2008 Winners and see that Juror Janie Gildow has given "Shop Talking" a special merit award for Whimsy. She had these comments:
Shop Talking The composition is strong, but the enchantment is what sets it apart. What a delightful piece!
The work appeared in the blog post in February.
After "Trash Talking" received some friendly reviews I decided on a "Talking" series
so now the question will be "what to paint next in the series"? I will have a giclee made from "Shop Talking" soon to have a companion series giclee for "Trash". I have been very pleased having Gamut Control produce my giclees.
Thanks to blogger, Kelly, for posting it on her website in February, Craft Amor.
Works will be delivered this weekend for the SWA show. I'd posted a Koi painting to enter and it was not chosen but Blue Rose, Blue Vase was accepted and this 5th show will earn me my signature status. Yeah!

Joseph Fettingis is the juror and some of the Canvas by Canvas group (including me) will be taking his April workshop. I've ordered some of his "special" brushes and colors and warned him I may have trouble with his "No Talking" rule. I'll try to behave. What could you expect from an artist that has a "Talking" series. Maybe he'll give me some slack? Or place me in the corner? No one loves the workshop environment better than I do... when everywhere you look artists are creating something they have never done before and at lunch you visit and talk art, and if you're away at a workshop, dinner conversation is art.

Koi ~ SWA Entry ~ Giclees ~ FAR

Koi
$675.00
Full sheet 22 x 30 acrylic watercolor on 140 lb. paper
This is one of my entries into the SWA juried show. You can enter 3 pieces and if the judge likes one, you will be in the show. There are times when the judge doesn't like anything sent. We are going digital so your 3 images are in 300 dpi on a cd and I hope there isn't another like me that will have to rush them over tomorrow the last day of entry. On my previous blog post I told about painting koi and will let you know in February if I get in the show.
Today I picked up 4 giclees I've had made from Gamut Control and I'm very pleased with the quality and I will write more about that later. They tag your fine art reproductions and send the images to FAR Fine Art Registry and you have a portfolio on line. The artist adds painting descriptions, profiles and biography. While there type in Nancy or Standlee and you will see my page and what I'm talking about. On the Gamut site my catalog page is the very bottom image.
I hope you have a restful weekend. I think I have a rodent in my attic because of sounds overhead and overheard the last few days and some have been alarmingly loud - weather is predicted to warm a little so I'll feel more like looking into this problem. He sounds big!!

"Trash Talking" Giclee, Gamut, FAR, and a Dot Com

"Trash Talking" is now available in a giclee 20" x 20"

There are several new announcements with this post.
I have a new website that you are invited to view at Nancy Standlee Art .
Not all of my paintings have been listed yet and a few pages still need some work but the home page and the giclee page are intact.
I've contracted with Gamut Control for my fine art reproductions and you may view my catalog page here. Gamut is also producing some giclees for the collaborative group that I belong to, Canvas by Canvas,
The Art World News magazine will have an ad in the January issue with our photos and a write up. It hasn't hit the newsstands yet but I'll post about that later. Art World news is the best read trade publication in the art and framing industry today. It is a professional journal that shows industry trends and copies can be found at your local gallery or frame shop or by subscription and has a subscription base of 20,000, mailed 12 times a year, and it has been in operation since 1996.
I am in the process of having my work registered (part of the Gamut contract) and preparing my portfolio with the Fine Art Registry. The Fine Art Registry is packed with useful information for artists.

Fine Art Registry™ provides a unique, patented, high technology tagging and registration system for artists, collectors, galleries and museums, to help ensure authenticity and provide accurate provenance for works of art and all valuable collectibles. Fine Art Registry members have their own, online art gallery and artist portfolio.

Yesterday I painted with some CBC friends at the Upstairs Gallery and continued working on a koi entry for the juried show with SWA.
The prospectus can be found online but the deadline is drawing close, January 26. I am using some of the Nicholas Simmons techniques that he discussed on Wet Canvas using liquid acylic watercolors. I am signed up for his workshop with Artist Showcase in June and I'm really excited about this workshop. If you can't find a workshop in your area, Wet Canvas, has a wonderful learning site for demos and if you look under FISH you will see the Nick demo that has inspired my entry.
Watch for the post with the painting later on in the week.

Gallery Opening ~ Holiday Magic ~ Elf Yourself

SOLD

"Fear No Evil"
Acrylic on watercolor Paper, attached to a wrapped canvas 3/4" deep

Wishing you a Merry Christmas all month and I have a surprise greeting at the end of the post.

This impressionist acrylic was painted earlier in the year as I've been busy with CBC business at Holiday Magic event this weekend at the Arlington Convention Center. I've made a slide show of some images from our booth setup. Friday was very busy and we had good sales. The members working today reported a slow day.

The Friday workers, Maryann, Karen, and Cindy Y and I made a trip to a Colleyville Gallery, Art Impressions, to see our fine art giclees displayed during a festive 3 day, 4 location event. Other locations are Frameworks Kreartif, Visual Expressions, and Milan Gallery. Gamut Control promised celebrities at each event and we met another artist, David Dayan Fisher, at Art Impressions. He is an actor, artist and writer from LA and has played with Nick Cage in National Treasure and in my favorite tv show, "24" with Keifer Sutherland. He is a regular guest on NCIS (when the writers are not on strike.)

We had a enjoyable meal of Salvadorian Cuisine at Glorias and discussed some ideas for 2008 paintings and you will be seeing new work soon after being voted on and approved by 11 members.

I've found it increasingly difficult to find time to send cards to people I'd love to remember during Christmas. My son sent me an early greeting today and he called me to go check my email so he could hear me laugh when I opened it. So I thought it would be fun to share the site with my readers and you can send a greeting to your friends.

Dancer's Skirt ~ Petroleum Club Show ~ Acrylic ~ Blog

$64.00
8" x 8" Acrylic on canvas panel (Maybe I should title her Dancing Lady)

This was started in the Robert Burridge workshop in Mendocino, drawn and painted from a live model and I've finished it since I retuned home.
Our CBC group felt like dancing ladies last night as we had a spectacular opening at the Petroleum Club in Fort Worth. See the slide show below. We were on the 40th floor, overlooking the city and 17 of our paintings in a beautiful setting. The Petroleum Club of Fort Worth is one of the city's oldest and most distinguished private clubs and it symbolizes how Texans view themselves: Texas bold, Texas proud, Texas unique.
We sold http://www.canvasbycanvas.com/Texas_Cactus.html and http://www.canvasbycanvas.com/R1_Old_Red.html
A few sales really helped put us in the dancing mood.

Brian Plotkin from Gamut Control was there. He is a representative from Gamut who is representing us in reproduction and marketing our art worldwide.
Thanks to all of our friends and patrons who attended. It was a wonderful time. All 11 of us were there but we never were still enough to get a group photo. Maybe next year. Thanks to the Petroleum Club for hosting us.
