This has been difficult to photograph because I added gold paint in the vase - love that bling. This was another floral (see post HERE) that I painted during the Robert Burridge workshop in Granbury recently.

My friend Carol Nelson will be conducting a 4 day workshop in Granbury May 23-26, 2011. It is full. I flew to Denver to study with Carol in March 2010. One of the pieces that was inspired from that workshop won an honorable mention. Carol describes her workshop like this:

In this workshop, we will explore creating abstract compositions on a variety of supports using numerous acrylic mediums, metals, and collage materials. Participants will make texture samplers, learn about the fundamentals of abstract composition, types of supports, methods of attachment, tyvek preparation, epoxy resin application, and presentation options for a finished piece.

I've signed up for a Sante Fe Workshop with Niki Gulley in August and I have been thinking about water-soluble oils and have been reading about them - again. The workshop will be a painting and photography class with landscape plein air painting from different picturesque settings daily with demos and critiques (a little time for sightseeing and shopping.) Niki is from Dallas and has 20 years painting experience and 10 years teaching. Her husband is the photographer for the other choice in the workshop. I'm a studio painter but I thought I "might" try some plein air this summer and is there a more interesting site than Santa Fe? I will probably paint with my acrylics but have been reading about water soluble oils but I've never painted with oils - water soluble or not. I have two excellent books on the subject, "Water-soluble Oils" by Sean Dye and "No Experience Required: Water Soluble Oils" by Mary Deutschman. I somehow lost my Dye one and have spent many frantic hours looking for it and finally found it in a too ridiculous place and I won't even say where.
This has caused me to think about the need for a signaling device to be implanted in all things we purchase from iPhones, socks, books, DVD's for those of us who are organizationally challenged. When an item is lost, you call this central number and enter a description of the item, the phone will emit a tracer signal that causes the lost item to emit a piercing alarm or a gentle voice with maybe "Please come find me. I'm in your top dresser drawer hiding under the white sock". (In my case, it would have said..hey, you dummy, look on your bed at that stack of books you're reading.) Fortunately, I won't have to make that decision (oil or acrylic) today. Like Scarlet I'll think about it tomorrow. Today I need to start "searching" for all things to use in the Carol Nelson workshop. I do hope I find them or I may be the one emitting a piercing scream.

This was painted in April in Granbury TX LGAA in the Robert Burridge workshop. Eventually I will mount this on canvas as show here in his Artsy Fartsy February 2007 newsletter. Why isn't it painted on canvas to begin with? When traveling to workshops weight and bulk are always a problem and a flat piece of gessoed watercolor paper can be stored much easier than a bulky canvas. This piece could be placed in a frame without glass as it is since it has been varnished.
Journal Workshop - Cancelled.
Just an fyi the journal workshop has been cancelled in May at Dena's ranch. (But I will be there for Derek Gores and the two Bob Burridges that are scheduled.)

The next workshop for me will be my 2nd one with Carol Nelson in Granbury May 23-26 for a Metals and Mixed Media. This will be another "wild as you wanna be" workshop. Carol will let you add a little bling with some gold leaf or a few gold and silver sprinkles...woo hoo..I want to do one just like the one on the link with red and more red and if it turns out it will never be for sale.

Bob Burridge at the Granbury TX 4 day workshop April 12-15, 2011 and my 9th Robert Burridge workshop and I'm scheduled for 2 more at Dena's Ranch in August. The above warm up paintings are on gessoed watercolor paper with acrylic with some gold paint and that makes them very hard to photograph.
Why so many workshops? He says he doesn't teach painting he teaches self esteem and most of the students come away from his class ready to try new methods and experiment with techniques they've never tried before. Painting is not something you get as there is nothing to get, just do a lot of paintings and that includes a lot of bad paintings - just take a peek under my bed!! What makes a good idea for a painting - something that excites you. One of my favorite Bob quotes that I repeat often "It's all been done before, but not by you." He says working bigger (larger) will make you looser and sometimes he varnishes the painting when it's 3/4 done and then keeps on going. We use his color wheel to choose our color and a composition chart to choose our design, write down our intentions, and then play and have fun. If it doesn't look right, keep painting until it does.

Click the link to see the current issue and yours truly is in this one with a photo of her recent collages from the Derek Gores workshop. It was pretty insane what I did. I packed my car for the Burridge workshop and left it parked at DFW airport when I flew to Derek Gores Portrait workshop in FL. I flew in Sunday evening and headed to Dallas ready for the Burridge workshop on Monday without going back home. I brought in the FL collage to show the class and Bob.

This is the cover of one of the small Strathmore 400 series 4 x 6 in drawing pads I'm recording some images in. Check my last blog post for more information. I can see that I will fill up these little books pretty quickly and I've decided to collage on the front and cover with clear mailing tape - something quick and easy. On this one I put about Bob's Granbury workshop and the KE stands for the Kathleen Elsey workshop I've just finished in Santa Barbara.
This partial page is in a 9 x 12 journal that I use to record daily or weekly events and memories. This week Krogers had 12 oz containers of blackberries on special for $2.88 and it brought back memories of my mom picking us blackberries for a delicious cobbler and as an elementary librarian one of my favorite books to read the younger ones was Peter Rabbit. I will talk about how I journal and why at Dena's for my "Love Your Life" workshop May 19 and 20th. Check out my previous post HERE where I discussed the process for using these skins from your painting palette in the Robert Burridge Workshop in Dallas. This piece is highly textured and it just makes you want to have a messy palette to have more dried "skins". Bob is in Pensacola this morning for another 5 day workshop and I'm having my coffee and thinking about what a great painting experience those students are going to have. Bob is in Texas several times this year and his next Texas workshop will be in Granbury, Texas, April 11-15, 2011 and you know what? My friends will not be surprised but I'm already packed since I use big plastic tubs to haul my workshop "stuff" in and it's still on the couch ready to go from the Dallas trip. (Sometimes I won't let them come in just meet me in the front yard!) I use the back of my Rav 4 as a big art supply store with extra canvases and paper and maybe a Christmas fruitcake or two close by. I was telling some of the group in Dallas that we had some pretty bad weather in January and February and if and when I was ever stranded in an ice flow or snowdrift, I would be the most popular girl passing our fruitcake "food" to starving and cold fellow travelers (since my Christmas fruitcake is still in the passenger side floorboard.) In August, when Bob gets to Dena's Ranch, we may have to put this cake under refrigeration or soak it in a tasty beverage.

Goofy Bird ~ Acrylic Skins ~ Robert Burridge Workshop by Texas Artist Nancy Standlee

I've been in Dallas for the Robert Burridge workshop and today we watched Bob paint his "Circus Birds" using the dried paint skins from his palette as a collage. He peels them off and attaches to his paper/canvas with acrylic gel. Naturally I had to try it and some of mine looked a little menacing so I chose one that looked more "normal". To see some of Bob's birds see his Artsy Fartsy Newsletter February 2008, and on how to make the skins see November 2010 and you can subscribe for his monthly Artsy Fartsy newsletter for free. On his home page there is a YouTube video posted about the circus birds acrylic "skins". He uses a 4 mil plastic for a palette so the dried acrylic peels off easily and try one of these birds and see if you don't laugh in the process. On this page there are a few more of the birds with his circus series.

This is Bob with one of his Circus Birds and this may give you a clue why I named my bird a "Goofy Bird". I'll come up with a more clever named bird later.

Citra Solv Collage Pear ~ Robert Burridge Workshop ~ Dallas ~ Nancy Standlee Texas Daily Painter

I posted yesterday about the Robert Burridge workshop in Dallas where Bob demonstrated making collage papers using Citra Solv and he did a collage demo of a pear using the papers made from a National Geographic magazine. I guess this pear should be named the "Burridge Collage Pear" because I was looking at his piece on the wall while working on this one. Torn pieces of the papers were adhered with liquid or gel medium, and the background was painted with acrylic and the collage was glazed with acrylic paint. There are other examples of Citra Art on the website at www.citrasolv.com. Be sure you use the concentrated version which does not have a sprayer and have fun. Dallas Floral ~ Robert Burridge Workshop by Nancy Standlee Texas Contemporary Painter

Today in the Robert Burridge Workshop we made a "mess" with acrylic paints and a Viva paper towel on watercolor paper or canvas and then negative painted and "found" flowers or trees. Several have made comments on my blog or Facebook about wanting to take with Bob and my advice is get your reservation in a class as soon as possible. It will change your painting life. Before lunch we went out on the patio with a National Geographic magazine, Citra Solv liquid, some alcohol and sprinkled the pages and made some great collage pages. I glued some of them down later this afternoon for a pear and it will be posted later in the week. Citra Solv has an artists site that is fun to see what other artists have done with this cleaning product and the company provided the class with some free samples. Thanks Citra Solv. This is my acrylic and collage painting done today at the Artists Showplace Gallery with California artist Robert Burridge teaching his Watermedia and Collage: Postmodern Painter Meets the Contemporary Collage Artist 5 day class.

This was collaged at the Derek Gores Collage Portraiture workshop in Melbourne, Florida, February 26 and 27. Here is the Brevard Museum description of the class:
"In this collage portraiture workshop, Derek will teach you to use torn paper to capture a portrait in a fresh new way! You will make one finished portrait of any person you choose. Or, if you're inspired to make a collage of something other than a person, that is fine too! Derek will demonstrate and guide you through the process of drawing, selecting your colors, and building up you collage layer by layer."
The image was taken from a magazine and inspiration was from one of Derek's earlier pieces using recycled magazines, maps, wine labels, song lyrics, and postal stamps and found papers.

I was very happy to have Suzy "Pal" Powell of Plains, TX. meet me at DFW to attend the Derek Gores Workshop and she gave me this collage for my "superb" driving skills! In the Derek workshop I mentioned on my blog in December, I flew into Melbourne but this time we decided to fly into Orlando and drive down. We had a great time, met some new friends, ate some great seafood, walked the beaches and thoroughly enjoyed Derek's workshop. Derek will be in Texas June 1 and 2 at the Wenmohs Ranch. Check with Dena if you'd like to attend. Suzy and I both plan to be there.
I packed my car for the Robert Burridge workshop before I parked it at the airport for the Florida trip. I got off the plane from Orlando, jumped in the car and headed to Dallas for a Burridge Watermedia and Collage: Postmodern Painter Meets the Contemporary Collage Artist. I agree this is a little obsessive and you will think that when I tell you this is my 8th Burridge workshop. We got off to a great start today and later this week I'll post some of the paintings from it. I've been a little busy and some things go undone. For instance, my Christmas fruitcake is rolling around in my car passenger seat floorboard. OK... it's another story and maybe I'll dispose of it when I'm unloading from these workshops. One thing I've learned is plastic garbage bags make great collage bags for packing slightly damp collages. I was not too sure that I wouldn't have various parts of clothing stuck to my collage upon arriving but both the collages came through. The second one was a good start of a Canvas by Canvas member that will be completed after regrouping and finding a new place to store the Christmas fruitcake.

Landscape #5 ~ Cruise by Texas Daily Painter Nancy Standlee

In a previous post, I discussed these small warm ups that were done at the Robert Burridge workshop and I haven't painted since. Since I was invited to join some old college friends, Tarleton State U in Stephenville, TX to go on a Western Caribbean cruise leaving from Galveston for 7 days. It was my first cruise and what fun to be with friends and retell and embellish old stories and make some new memories. Thirteen of us had either gone there or had married someone there and one lady brought her son and he tried to keep us organized. Probably my biggest surprise is how casual the dress is. If you go wear what you have and bring about one or two dressy things. You'll never look as good as the best ones and you'll never look as bad as the worst. The food was fabulous and it was often, really 24 hours of choices, served by ninja waiters who handled a plate every two seconds. Our evening waiters were from Bali and worked 10 months and then would be off 2 months. A regret - I love personal pan pizzas and I never tried one on the ship. There wasn't time. The ship's design and decorations were an artists' dream. Rooms were named for artists, Monet, Renoir and paintings were everywhere. In the slide show below you can see one of the small tables in the theater and the table tops were small paintings and then an element from the background would be used for other decorations.

We became friends our first year as freshmen at Tarleton in 1954. Peggy and I were on the annual staff together and were both in the School of Home Economics. (They don't even call it that anymore.) Pat was always winning some campus beauty contest.
There is something wrong with my shirt legs. They just don't seems to match up to mine.

"That's What I Like About You"

This is another of the works I painted at Dena's Ranch at the Robert Burridge workshop and see previous posts for more details. Now Bob did advise us on titles and said call it something that would help identify the painting, example "The Red Landscape". I will never be able to locate this one with a title like this but it seemed appropriate at the time. Titles are never easy but this seemed to fit in with my couples series of friends and lovers. I was experimenting with some print backgrounds and I like the subtle print collage element.

Patience
I don't like to dwell on physical limitations, aches, pains, certainly not anything to do with aging, but last week, Monday, February 15, I had cataract surgery on my right eye and I have not been a patient with patience. No pain just annoyed as heck that I can't see well and after crying at the post op visit the following day, my doctor explained the cornea has been cut, it's swollen, be patient so I will until the next surgery in March for the left. Then after both eyes have healed I'll be fitted for new glasses and I'll have no need for patience. One of the problems as I see it is you have a new lens in the eye with the old prescription glasses and nothing is working. I went to the dollar store yesterday and got a pair of high magnification reading glasses and I can see my computer screen and read a little better. Didn't Betty Davis say, "Getting old is not for sissies." (I chose to go with the single lens and use glasses for astigmatism as I didn't want to deal with a possible double adjustment - for those who may have a question after having this done.)

YouTube and Myrna
For some time now I've been wanting to put a short video on YouTube with a painting demo of my own and one for Canvas by Canvas, the collaborative art group I belong to. My friend, Myra, has a fantastic demo with her new mini camcorder and now I've purchased a similar one (because of her). It's still in the box and I will read the directions when I can READ again. I'll be sure and post the results. I've seen so many eye charts this past week, I think I know what the next background for a collage figurative painting might be and that might make a good YouTube debut.

"Hearts to You" and Valentine Heart Healthy by Daily Painter Nancy Standlee

Bob Burridge had us painting hearts at the end of the workshop. (See previous posts for more about this workshop at Dena's Ranch.)His example is at the end of the post. These were fun and it was another way we learned more about negative painting.

This is one of Connie's foundation paintings on paper that she gave me (we traded paintings) and I used a gold paint around the edges and there is a camera glare at the bottom. I may go back in and glaze the gold with some red. I gave Connie a 5 x 7 landscape that I will post later. You might be interested in checking out some of Jim Dine's hearts. Painting day is over and it's time for the chips and dips. One night I did fix a black bean salsa that was heart healthy and delicious. I'm in the process of making some changes in my diet.

Healthy Hearts
I've been doing some reading and study about a better way to eat with a plant powered diet. I'm not promising I'll never eat another personal pan pizza but I have been doing some serious study about some alternatives. Check some of these books out from your library. I think you will find them enlightening. I graduated college with a BS in Home Economics in 1959 and this is far different from what we were taught and in turn taught our students.

Robert Burridge Workshop ~ Floral Acrylic Negative Painting by Texas Daily Painter Nancy Standlee

"To Dena with Love"

Dena is the owner of the Wenmohs Ranch where the Robert Burridge workshop was held February 1 - 5. I painted this acrylic floral with some of the same negative techniques that was used with the tree painting in the previous post. You make a mess on the paper or canvas with brushes, Viva paper towels or fingers and then find and paint around the floral shape with the negative painting technique. To explain negative shape painting Bob related the story that one day the Pope came to visit Michelangelo in his studio while he was sculpting his "David", marveled at the work and asked, "How do you know what to cut away?". Michelangelo's answer, "It's simple. I just remove everything that doesn't look like David." The class attempted to remove everything that didn't look like a tree or a flower in our attempts. I scratched and drew into the wet paint and later stenciled on some letters after it was dry.

City Girls and Cow Patties
Dena's cows blocked the road on Friday and didn't want us to leave. Mooing to us they called, "Stay and play. We like artists". Connie exited the vehicle to take photos until one of them sneezed. She did wonder if they had been eating elephants from the size of some of the meadow muffins. Cheryl, a city girl, went out for a jog first day early but was back within minutes and when questioned she said, "Those cow patties freaked me out." Do you realize Texas does have a cookie recipe that's called "Texas Cow Patties". I'm not making that cookie recipe.

The tin barn where we paint. There was a door at the end so we didn't have to lift up the big doors. Bob told us to keep our tables neat. "Don't have anything on the table that doesn't serve you." Hard to do. He used a big plastic 4 mil sheet for his palette and naturally I had to photograph it on Friday when he attached it to the door.

"The Burridge Tree"

I'll have to fess up. This tree is only about one half mine. If you know me or read the blog, I just don't "do trees" but that was one of my intentions for this Robert Burridge workshop - Paint a Burridge tree as I've tried many times. I made the "mess" on the canvas (can use gessoed paper) and then went into panic mode when it came to the negative painting. Bob graciously took over and I now have a Burridge tree that I'm sooo proud of. Because it is hard for me to see some of the limbs I've found it beneficial to use blackboard chalk to find them before just jumping in with the negative painting.

See the Villa Fattoria Bacio, I was there several years ago with a Ted Nuttall workshop but I didn't paint trees.

So OK the first day was really cold, then it started raining! I had on so many layers I felt like a mountain man. Thanks, Elizabeth for sharing this photo. On the left is Terry and I met her at my very first Burridge workshop at Dena's and sweet girl remembered I was collecting rusty stuff and brought me a little plastic bag of rusty tin. When I use it in a painting I will surely post the results. Now go try a "Burridge Tree". I know I plan to make a few more starts and will try to finish the next one all by myself but thanks, Bob, for all your help on this one.

I'm in the red boots. Does this look like us? Are you kidding? But we felt like this while in Bobland.

You don't think we look like our painted images? Well, check this out. Here we are in real life arriving at "Bobland" or Dena Wenohs Ranch Sunday afternoon for the Robert Burridge "Create Today with Wild Abandon : We Don't Need No Stinkin' Brushes" Workshop February 1-5, 2010. Whoo-Hoo and we had way too much fun. No I don't have red hair but I did have on a red hat and we couldn't have put a Popsicle stick in that car after we got our gear in there.

The Bunkhouse where some stayed. Connie and I stayed here. Others stayed at Dena's house or in local motels in Marble Falls.

This was my 7th time to be in a Robert Burridge workshop and this one was special because one of my Canvas by Canvas peeps, Connie, went with me. We painted in the workshop barn which had a tin roof, (great sound effects when it rained for two days), we had a short propane outage, a few plumbing incidents, and a big water pump mishap but did we care? Heck no. We were having way too much fun to be bothered with a little mud, a little water and a little cool weather. Would I spend nearly a week preparing, loading, driving 4-5 hours to take another one tomorrow? You betcha. I tell Bob "There is no place I'd rather be on a Monday morning than at a Robert Burridge workshop." You see lots of old friends, meet some cool new ones, learn a whole bunch from Bob's sharing ways. He gives many demos, lectures, floor shows, a little slapstick, and shares all of his secrets. He begins new work, brings and paints some in progress, and even helps us finish some of ours. Bob says about painting, "Quit complaining. We all want to be better." So that is why we come together, to socialize, to paint and try to get better. Start thinking about your intentions in your art work. How do you know when you've arrived if you don't know where you're going? - a Bobism.

Why do I take so many of his workshops? Sometimes I just don't get it the first time and it's never the same old tired exercises or canned lecture you find in some workshops. Each time he's in a different new place with ideas and paintings and in his words he's there "to kick us in the butt" to get us motivated and that he does.

Bob is big on "Intentions" - Why am I here? What do I hope to get out of the workshop? What is this painting about? My intention for the above painting was I wanted to paint from an experience, use some graphic elements, and paint something I haven't done before. I used an old telephone book for the base and collaged some pages, placed a gold wash over them and painted the figures and stenciled some letters over all.
