ArtByte Collage Tutorial is Ready, Etsy Torn Paper Collage, NancyStandleeArt, Pear:Poire XOX 13077, Torn Paper Collage Paper Painting, 30 in 30, Day 23, September 2013 Leslie Saeta Challenge by Texas Collage Artist Nancy Standlee

 Pear:Poire XOX 13077
10x10 torn paper collage on gallery wrapped canvas

Earlier I had done a 9x12 collage pear and it sold and since I'd had many nice comments on it I decided to try another one in the square format.

Side View, each side is different as you can tell from the back view

Back view (hanging wire has not been added)

To see work by other artists who are following along with the 30/30 go to the Leslie Saeta blog. I have joined hundreds of other artists for this September painting challenge and we are trying to paint and post a painting each day. It doesn’t have to be a finished piece but some piece of art each day. On some of the larger commission pieces I have posted portions over a 3 day period. On the smaller pieces I can do one a day.
This is one of those paintings I did before I left for the Leslie Saeta plein air oil palette knife painting workshop in Virginia Beach. Here is a group shot of us out on the deck of the beach house and I don't have to mention what a great fun experience it was.

A little camera tilt here but we are loading up to go to the beach and paint on the 2nd day.

Thanks to the ones who drove the rest of us and who were not too picky about sand or oil smudges in their vehicles. The name of the place was Sandbridge.

Next to meeting some great new friends was Leslie's great meals she prepared for us. This apple dumpling pie was spectacular. We will have to ask her to post the recipe. She used the honey crisp apples we bought at the fruit stand.

This mixed media collage sold while I was in the workshop and is in the mail today, Game On, heading to a Texas art collector.

I have written an ArtByte about the process of torn paper collage for the Daily Paintworks site and it is ready for viewing HERE. It has 10 pages with more than 50 images. An ArtByte is a small online tutorial that may be free or it's very affordable. Mine will be very affordable at $10.00 and it's loaded with information . It is available immediately and can be viewed as soon as a PayPal payment is made. It is stored in your ArtByte library. And/or I can answer any questions you might have. Send me an email or message me on Facebook. You can also leave a review. There are several very good free ArtBytes that are filled with information. When you get to the Daily Paintworks web page, look under tutorials. Here is my online gallery at Daily Paintworks.

I've decided to open a shop at Etsy as I will be adding some small watercolors soon. The shop has limited paintings right now but I will add more each day. http://www.etsy.com/shop/NancyStandleeArt

Goofy Bird ~ Acrylic Skins ~ Robert Burridge Workshop by Texas Artist Nancy Standlee

"Goofy Bird"
7 1/2 x 11 in on 140 watercolor paper using acrylic skins

I've been in Dallas for the Robert Burridge workshop and today we watched Bob paint his "Circus Birds" using the dried paint skins from his palette as a collage. He peels them off and attaches to his paper/canvas with acrylic gel. Naturally I had to try it and some of mine looked a little menacing so I chose one that looked more "normal". To see some of Bob's birds see his Artsy Fartsy Newsletter February 2008, and on how to make the skins see November 2010 and you can subscribe for his monthly Artsy Fartsy newsletter for free. On his home page there is a YouTube video posted about the circus birds acrylic "skins". He uses a 4 mil plastic for a palette so the dried acrylic peels off easily and try one of these birds and see if you don't laugh in the process. On this page there are a few more of the birds with his circus series.

This is Bob with one of his Circus Birds and this may give you a clue why I named my bird a "Goofy Bird". I'll come up with a more clever named bird later.
A more serious (can there be such a thing in one of his workshops?) theme is his works for the painting of the month club. Twelve paintings a year in a 6 x 9 in. format and matted. Contact Kate@RobertBurridge.com for information on how to join this exclusive club.

"Fluctuation" ~ Contemporary Textured Abstract ~ Texas Daily Painter Nancy Standlee

"Fluctuation"
7 3/4" x 15" Contemporary Textured Mixed Media Abstract
MDF board, copper, metallic colors, Tyvek paper collage

I love to explore collage, mixed media and texture. While researching online this week, I found a YouTube video introducing an online class, "Texture Town" with Julie Prichard and Chris Cozen and signed up. The class has just started and if you'd like to join me the first two classes have been more introductory classes and we really haven't started applying the texture yet. The piece above, "Fluctuation", is one completed over the summer and has some copper and metallic paint in it. In this workshop, Julie and Cris will be using a limited nature palette.
Here are links to their websites and blogs:

Mixed Media Painted Paper Collage ~ "Jessie" ` Grand Prairie Arts Council Show by Texas Daily Painter Nancy Standlee

"Jessie"
15" x 22" Watercolor, acrylic, charcoal on paper NFS

This mixed media (watercolor, acrylic, collage with painted papers) is on display at the Grand Prairie Memorial Library until Saturday, September 25, 10 am. I had two paintings accepted in the Grand Prairie Arts Council Annual Juried Art Show and Sale. I had posted her previously HERE. (click on link)

This is a not so good photo with the frame. I do not have my technique down for taking a photo after the painting is framed but I wanted to tell you about Franken Frames.
Franken Frames is a small Tennessee company that will make your frame to order, gives excellent service and as I found out today extremely good packing. I felt like it was magic show time as I pulled out paper after paper packing for the floater frames for two collages that will go to the AMA show. Call Roger to ask for a catalog 1-800-322-5899.

Acrylic on Gallery Wrap Canvas
30 x 24 in.
This is the other painting I have in the Grand Prairie show. The opening reception was Sunday and was well attended.

Dena's Daisy ~ Painted Paper Painting Collage ~ Acrylic Donkey by Texas Daily Painter Nancy Standlee

"Dena's Daisy"
Donkey
16 x 20 in.
Acrylic Paper Painting Collage on Masonite

This is my latest painted paper collage painting. I've taken workshops in collage and painting papers with Gerald Brommer, Carrie Burns Brown and Anne Bagby and I have a nice selection of painted papers. I'm getting them organized in two Iris 3 drawer carts (22"W x 25" H) I found at Bed Bath and Beyond. The same thing has happened with the torn paper collage that happened when I took up quilting to "use up all of my old fabric scraps". I'd visit the fabric stores and find new colors and patterns to use instead of using what I had. I find this to hold true with the paper scraps. I'm painting new oriental papers to complement the painting.
I got the donkey image prepared and the paper for the demo last Friday night at the LGAA Friday night Gallery Walk in Granbury. Because of the article about the longhorn painted paper collage in the Hood County News I met some new friends and found a long lost friend I met in TWU library school.
I was notified Monday that the longhorn has been accepted into the
LGAA juried Fall Festival of Art Show, September 25-October 30.

Dena has 3 donkeys on her ranch where I have taken Robert Burridge workshops and in July taught my art journaling classes. The donkey's names are Sally, Sarah, and Daisy and your guess is as good as mine as to which one I used in the photo reference but I liked the title of Dena's Daisy. Those girls will follow you around looking for a handout and will come right into the painting studio if left to their own devices.
I will teach the art journal workshop at Dena's in 2011 May 19, 20, and 21 and Gerald Brommer will be back at Artist Showplace in May 2011 also. He wrote the book on collage. See you there.

Gerald Brommer Workshop ~ Week One ~ Collage

Collage Figure
7" x 11"
Gerald Brommer has presented 2 weeks of workshops at the Artists' Showplace Gallery. I enjoyed the first week so much, Stained Papers and Collage, when an opportunity to take the second week came, Designing with Watercolor or Acrylics and Collage, I jumped at the chance. The above figure was not one of the assignments but by the end of the week I did a figure when we were on our own.
For the first few days we were working with pure collage with our stained watercolor washi papers and later we began adding more paint. We were cautioned against turning these into paintings but let some of the collage show.
We could add anything that would stick to the support, 300 pound watercolor paper, with acrylic mat medium.
Jerry said, "Don't talk to a collage artist about archival. Who cares if it lasts forever and if it starts to fall apart?
Good. It will make it more interesting. Kurt Schwitters (20th century master of collage) used wine labels and newsprint."
We purchased a packet of 20 various
washi papers about letter size and one of the samples had fragments of the Bangkok Daily News in it (certainly not archival). How wonderful and freeing is that. He also stated, "Paint to please yourselves and hope that others like it" and "Don't over think this. There are no mistakes with collage - just add another piece of paper until it gets so heavy you can't lift it."
Radial Design
11" x 11"
Radiating from a central core. One of about 12 designs we studied. I supplemented some of the painted washi papers with some acrylic painted pieces from the Anne Bagby workshop and from the Carrie Burns Brown workshop.
Jerry Brommer
Collage artist, story teller (the Hittite story was memorable) author of books, books, books, 35 plus art books and some are used in high schools and colleges, educator, juror and scholar and a very enthusiastic master of watercolor and collage painting methods. I guess it would be correct to say he wrote the book on it. Check back later for future posts on the workshop. There is great hope in collage that when your children put you in the "home" and you're not allowed to have scissors you can still enjoy collage, just tearing up and gluing it down again.

Anne Bagby Workshop ~ Artists' Showplace ~ Texas Art Blog

Approximately 5" square image made from a collage of handmade papers from the Anne Bagby workshop held at Artists' Showplace. This example was placed in my journal. I made the face area from a page of the 1924 The Outline of History by H.G. Wells. I like some of the text to show.
Anne

Project on a 12" square of deli wrap of handmade papers done Saturday, colored and stamped and collaged. Anne said keep it simple and watch your values. This was anything but simple and it was too much the same value so I added lots of line work. Today I covered a 7" x 10" journal with the page. On the inside I'd pasted a Dan Burt drawing from his workshop. This journal will be used for drawing more than journaling. Anne says she takes the paper out to cover the journals but I worked around the rings and ran a line of paint connecting the edges. Not as neat but it's still together from someone who can't reassemble a ballpoint pen.

Art Journal Page 78
A trip to Aggie land for a wedding and seeing my first bluebonnets.

Art Journal Page 79
Still on the move but time to check out Grace Haverty's sketches. Packing, packing again for the Bagby workshop and it is a 3 day from Thursday to Saturday.
Art Journal Page 80
Anne's card, her chop, some instructions and my small work for my journal. See the stamp at the left of the image...it's an Anne Bagby original I won by using the most line - hope she doesn't ask for it back after she reads this post. Some of us Southern girls in watercolor workshops find great comfort sipping a cup of Earl Gray and applying a watercolor or two but mixed media artists are a different breed. They work really fast and do what's called "speed collage". I'm a Southern Texan. I work slow, talk and hear even slower and like to have time to inquire about my neighbor's Mama occasionally. Don't let Anne Bagby's diminutive size mislead you. She's a one woman dynamo, spewing forth tips, orders, suggestions, and ideas in a rapid lively way and hence the notation in my journal of "General" Bagby. I may have exaggerated a little when I wrote in my journal she said "Move it, Nancy" but I sat at the front table and was under her all seeing eye. At times she did remind me I needed to forge ahead.
I was glad I'd ordered her DVD from Creative Catalyst as I was a little more prepared to know what to expect. We cut out stamps and made our papers on Thursday and Friday and worked on our projects on Saturday - when I got to have a cup of tea while working. I've learned new paper and stamp making techniques, met a fascinating new instructor, made some new friends and visited with some old ones at Artists Showplace. They have a great facility for workshops and provide individuals with nice long tables and the owners are helpful and encouraging. Restaurants are close by and there is plenty of parking for unloading art supplies.
Another treat was Anne's show, Prototypes in Paper in the gallery and we could view many of her 12" canvases. The show will hang during March.
Thanks, Anne, for your patience and explanations. On Saturday, we packed away our supplies and cleared off the tables leaving only our handmade paper and our projects then each student had a show and tell time. The hand stamped and painted papers were amazing and beautiful and now for more projects with our wonderful papers.

On Friday night a student of Anne's, Dianne Hicks, stopped by. She has been to France with her and taken other workshops in the states. Her web site is a treat.

I've included a slide show of some of the activities during the workshop:

Red Watermelon ~ Poppy Seed Dressing ~ P & M Festival ~ De Leon, TX. ~ Art Blog Collage Painting ~ Nancy Standlee

$55.00
9 x 12 Acrylic collage on gallery wrapped canvas,
1 3/8" depth profile
(Originally posted on the Artist Food Network)

Watermelon is one of the world’s most perfect foods. I served it to daughter’s family about a week ago and had it sliced when they arrived. Upon seeing the table my daughter quipped “Oh, I see you’re using your redneck placemats today” referring to the newspapers I had spread out to catch the drips. I started really looking at the arrangement with the red watermelon and black and white of the paper
and I grabbed my camera and started shooting. I liked the look and decided to use a piece of newspaper for a collage. I've painted over it so not too much of the paper if visible but it is below the watermelons. I used the Fort Worth Star Telegram but as an afterthought, I should have used the De Leon Free Press. This is the result. Watermelon can stand alone. It doesn’t t need any special presentation. Some foods need ornaments and garnishes and sauces but with watermelon you just need some watermelon and a place to sit.

That’s what will be going on at the De Leon Peach and Melon Festival this weekend of August 10, 2007.

The Annual De Leon Peach and Melon Festival is one of America's premier family celebrations, with truly something for everyone who comes to this small town in the heart of Texas' melon country.

Over the past 92 years, the celebration has become a tradition for local residents, as well as for the 20,000 annual visitors the Festival brings to this community of just over 2,400 persons located 90 miles from Fort Worth, Waco, & Abilene equally.

The four evenings of the first week of August showcase entertainers, unique family events, a Street Parade, an old-fashioned carnival, and lots of good-tasting watermelon, Arts and Crafts Exhibits & local food vendors. Auxiliary events connected with the Festival include an earth-shaking tractor pull, one of
Texas' best bike rides, a sanctioned "42" Tournament and a downtown celebration.

I enjoy meeting at the elementary cafeteria on Sat. morning at 10:00 for an all school reunion and discover who is the oldest ex-student there or one who has traveled the farthest. We sing Oskee-wow-wow De Leon (that will have to take a separate post!!!) and recognize the 50 year class and they get to sit on the stage. In the afternoon there is a seed spitting contest and then.. ...hold on, you go downtown sit in a folding chair if you have one, on the curb if you don’t and watch as the big trucks and trailers bring in ice cold watermelon that are yours for the stroll over to the middle of the street where you are handed one from one of De Leon's many gracious P & M volunteers.

Return to your spot and good for you if you brought some silverware and your salt shaker but dig in and keep eating until all of the melons are unloaded. Later you’ll have to scatter because the firetrucks will slowly pass by and spraying away those stray chunks and seeds and juice.

If you enjoy this kind of small town hospitality and are considering a move or a holiday, check with the Chamber of Commerce. I graduated high school in 1954 and I don’t know very many but our class of about 33 try to get together sometime during the yearly festival. One precious thing about my classmates is their lovely spirits haven't changed but our bodies are betraying us but I still see them as they were and I even remember their handwriting. It was a typical small town experience back in the 50's where everyone knew you were Boss and Marie's daughter and they could and would be reached if necessary. It is one trip I look forward to in August. You plan your trips carefully in Texas in August. When my father was living, he would go early on parade day and park his pickup under a shade tree and later we'd join him and sit in lawn chairs in the pickup bed for the best view and time in the city. I'd insist he "make the drag" before traveling up the street a few blocks to home just to make sure I got to wave and yell at anyone I might recognize. The DeLeon's motto:

"Busiest Town - Friendliest People"

Now for the recipe. I know I said watermelon can stand on it's own but if you want to dress it up a poppy seed dressing could be added to a mix of summer fruits of watermelon, cantaloupe, strawberries, grapes, or pineapple chunks. To see my poppy painting click HERE.

POPPY SEED DRESSING

  • 1/3 TO 3/4 cup of sugar
  • 1 t. ground mustard or prepared mustard
  • 1/2 t. salt
  • 1/3 cup cider vinegar
  • 1 T. onion grated
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 t. to 1 T. of poppy seeds, or to taste
  • Whisk together all ingredients except the poppy seeds or put in a blender/food processor
  • If using a processor, blend ingredients and add oil slowly and add seeds after blending
  • Keep refrigerated. It's also great with a spinach and toasted pecan salad.

Lemons ~ Luby's ~ Lemon Pie

Lemons by Nancy Standlee
$60.00
Acrylic Collage on Canvas Board 6" x 8"
Something NEW...The Artist Food Network... a new blog for artists to share their recipes and their food paintings. You'll see I included a recipe with this painting and that will be the theme of our blog launched over the weekend. If you're an artist with a great recipe and a great painting of an ingredient of the recipe, or recipe related please check out our blog or send it to Artistrecipes@gmail.com and share it with us. You can read more about it on the blog site and you can subscribe to it by email. We hope you like the new blog and hope to see you there. This is a copy of my post that appeared on the site today.

Several of us painted today and when lunch came Cindy Yandell, Barbara Hackney, and I took off to Luby's. Luby's is a Texas tradition and their motto is "Tastes Like Texas, Feels Like Home." Texas families have been going to Luby's since 1947 and their headquarters are in Houston. There are always requests in the recipe section of the Fort Worth Star Telegram for a Luby speciality. That's where this yellowed copy of Luby's Lemon Icebox Pie came from. I thought it would complement my lemon collage painting. I love collage and attaching bits and pieces to my paintings.
I noticed that in this old 1995 copy the recipe called for raw eggs before it was recommended to be cautious in using them for people with a weakened defense system. When growing up the only way to make homemade ice cream was to use raw eggs and nothing beat a bowl of fresh peach or banana ice cream. There are many recipes to be found for a lemon ice box pie and they all will probably follow this one pretty close but now we see a short baking time. Make it if your hips can stand it.
LEMON ICEBOX PIE
1 can (14 oz. sweetened condensed Milk (Eagle Brand)
3 large eggs, separated
1/2 cup fresh lemon juice (3 or 4 lemons) No bottled lemon juice!
1 teaspoon grated lemon peel
1/4 cup sugar
One 9" graham cracker crust
1. Heat oven to 350 F.
2. Combine milk, egg yolks, lemon juice and lemon peel. Mix until blended. Pour crust and bake for 5 minutes.
3. Beat egg whites until almost stiff and add sugar, a tablespoon at a time, while beating until the whites hold a peak. Spread over the filling to edge of the crust.
4. Bake 12 to 15 minutes at 350 until the meringue is lightly browned. Refrigerate until served.

PS: Interesting find. I have the Luby's 50th Anniversary Recipe Collection cookbook and since I'm an Amazon affiliate I thought I'd check if they had this title in used books. They do. Click on my Amazon link "No image available" and you will soon be looking for the nearest garage sales for this loved cookbook. No I won't sell you mine. I couldn't live without the recipe for Date Nut Muffins.
