Self Portrait Nancy Standlee ~ Watercolor and Gouache

'Nancy Self Portrait'
6 x 9 in.
Watercolor and Gouache
140 lb hot press paper

The photograph was taken on a painting holiday at Port Bolivar, TX. and the scarf covered bad beach hair before dining with my collaborative painting group, Canvas by Canvas.

I began the painting in my first Donna Zagotta workshop but never finished it to my liking. I gave it some hot licks today after taking my second Zagotta workshop last week and remembering I never liked how the eyes looked. I did leave off the glasses and wrinkles and about 30 years.

Check out Self Portrait Global Love In Challenge #2 on David Lobenberg's blog and join in the fun. Artists send him a self portrait (read his rules) and he will post them. I emailed him this painting tonight to sushi3@mac.com.
I found David's site by way of Myrna Wacknov and Carol Marine. http://carolmarine.blogspot.com. These artists' portraits with some type of head gear on will be posted after September 12. This sounds like fun so get your favorite hats and grab a friend with a camera and start snapping. Texas needs some good representation with cowboy hats.

Watercolor Self Portrait ~ Nancy

Self Portrait
Watercolor 15" x 11" 300 lb paper, Elegant Writer pen

I painted this Wednesday as a possible slide entry for a juried show. It was drawn off before the Myrna workshop and before I learned that I'd better write down on the back of the paper what I did to the surface. I may or may not have put a 50/50% solution of matte medium and water on it before painting. I know I used the Elegant Writer and it has been on there so long it did not bleed at all. The pose is a Myrna one for sure. See my post about the Gorilla Pod and how I managed the photos. This photo was taken after our Petroleum Club opening in Fort Worth.
Myrna did a great Willie Nelson drawing on her blog post. I'm getting some material together to paint a portrait of him soon - maybe branch out from these self portraits.
Some of the Canvas by Canvas members (Cindy Y, Karen F, Barbara H and I) made a business trip to Dallas today and we came home with 2 commissions for our collaborative painting group. It's great to have a painting project in the works. While in Dallas, we checked out some Dragon Street galleries, especially Artizen, the scene of Jonas Gerard's performance art. I've mentioned this before but you must see him paint on You Tube. It's about 10 minutes of spellbinding painting in action.
We made a must stop at Asels Art Supply for more art supplies, even some charcoal to maybe work from the Alex Powers book, Painting People in Watercolor. The used copies on Amazon start at $40.00 to $100.00 so it's a great one for your painting library so watch for it at garage sales.

Self-Portrait ~ Watercolor ~ Spring Show ~ Find the Best Price ~ Tell Me

NFS
22" x 15" watercolor on 140 lb. paper
The photo was taken at a pool party prior to taking a dip with the CBC friends. I painted it in watercolor and it was purchased by a relative and now hangs in Denver. My friend wanted it also and a repainting was promised for a Christmas '06 gift. Yes, '06 I hate to admit but I just completed it today while painting with the CBC group at the Upstairs Gallery so I guess my friend will get the frame this Christmas and the painting. Yes, I did remove age spots, wrinkles, and glasses.

These are 4 6" square acrylic paintings by members of CBC completed today at the Gallery, Top Left, Barbara, Top Right Karen, Bottom Left, Cindy C, Bottom Right, Maryann. These ladies are getting a head start on our February show, The Neil Sperry All Texas Garden Show, February 29, March 1 and 2 at the Arlington Convention Center. We plan to do a series of mini acrylic paintings depicting items you might find around a garden plus some of our larger canvases found on our web site.
If you like to comparative shop and to find the best price when you shop online, you will love this site. One click can offer help for price comparison and coupon codes. Type in the item desired and Cheap Uncle will help you find the best price and maybe a coupon for free shipping.
I've heard about this fabulous telephone number that can give you driving directions any time, any place and they are free. I have programed it into my cell as I tend be a little directionally deficient. For voice prompted driving directions call (800) 555-8355 Tell Me. The main menu has categories like, Business Search, Ring Tones, Stock Quotes, News Center, Sports, Entertainment, Travel, and Popular Shortcuts. If you're confused about directions, you want Travel and then you have more choices but eventually you will hear Travel Directions and you will be able to give your present location and where you want to go.
Good luck in finding your way and making sure your Christmas gifts stay on schedule.

Self Portrait ~ Donna Zagotta Workshop ~ Port Bolivar Vacation ~ Art Blog

Not for Sale
6" x 9" Watercolor and Gouache on Hot Press Watercolor Paper
The photo was taken at the CBC's beach rental on Port Bolivar and the head wrap was to cover Gulf Hair and I was painting Pigasus, a CBC mini painting, while waiting for the group to go restaurant looking. We returned late September 11 and I packed for the Donna ZagottaArtists Showplace Gallery and hosted by the SWS organization. I had found Donna's work online several years ago and knew if she were ever in the area, I wanted to be in her workshop. I was more interested in her figures and her use of gouache. This is the painting I did in the workshop using watercolor and white gouache.
This particular workshop was "Developing Ideas for Creative Paintings" and was held September 12-14.
In this workshop, the emphasis is on finding methods and ideas for turning ordinary subjects into creative and imaginative paintings. Expanding possibilities for spontaneity through design and personal expression will be our focus. Workshop topics include: composition strategies, improvisational painting, developing a personal visual language, and exploring watercolor’s full potential as a transparent and opaque medium. This workshop will invigorate you with equal parts inspiration, information, and direction. All levels are welcome.
This is the statement on SWS's site about Donna:
Donna Zagotta is a nationally recognized artist and teacher. She is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society, Watercolor West and Midwest Watercolor Society. Her work has appeared on the cover of Watercolor Expressions and The Artist’s Magazine, and she was selected for Watercolor Magic’s “Ones to Watch” in 2001. Donna Zagotta’s paintings have evolved from an early emphasis on traditional watercolor techniques and traditionally influenced realism to an unconventional use of the watercolor medium and the exploration of the area that lies between realism and abstraction. She finds inspiration in the works of Edouard Vuillard, Henri Matisse and Richard Diebencorn, masters who were more focused on expressing color and spatial ideas than in rendering the particulars of subject matter.
Thanks, Donna, for a great workshop. We hope you come back to Texas soon and bring us more Michigan truth.
